Since today's new design of CNN, I can't watch the videos any more. I get a black square where the video is supposed to be.
Does anyone know what the magic incantation is to make this work again?

Just as a reference point CNN's new stuff does not work with Internet Exploder 6.0, either. It just sits there with an unusually ugly look on its face and does nothing. CNN is a write off anyway so....

I don't think we are on the same page. Are you saying that you can get the CNN videos to play from Firefox in Linux right now - today - from the new CNN website? If so, you are the only person I know of able to do it.
After CNN switched over to their newly redesigned website about a week ago, most of us are only able to get the lead-in promo to play and then the actual video does not play. They switched to Flash format. The CNN video does not work for me with the libflashplayer.so Shockwave Flash 9.0 r31 plugin for Firefox.
That is what I mean. So, if given the above, you are sill able to play CNN videos, I - and others I'm sure - would like very much to know what it is about your Linux/Firefox configuration is that is different from mine which allows you to play the CNN videos.

I'm running Firefox 1.5.0.12 . . and installed the video downloader extension. I have pretty much given up on the major broadcasters, and their media consolidation propaganda generating role in the U.S. BBC, France 24, Iran's Press TV, Al-Jazeerha, IHT, etc. aren't too bad for getting world news. Not sure how to download and view their videos, though. I have really low speeds on my DSL service here in the middle of the Iowa corn fields. Would be nice to be able to download and play as files. Any suggestions? Tom

The first would have been to try a video downloader extension, but you've said you've tried that. You might want to try another one out.
Alternatively, you can do things the hard way. Find out the URI for the video, either by looking at the page source, or right-clicking on a link and copying the URI. Then use something like mplayer to stream it to a local file.
e.g. mplayer -dumpstream http://example.com/
Replacing the web address in that example with the one you want to fetch.
If the link refers to a referring file, rather than the media file itself, such as a M3U, PLS, or other format, playlist sort of thing, then you could do something like this, instead:
e.g. mplayer -dumpstream -playlist http://example.com/
Or, look through the downloaded playlist file to work out the actual address, and plug that into the first example.
After a couple of days of Googling for info, I happened upon a work-around for the problem.
Click on Tools->Extensions to pop up the Extensions window. Then click on the "Get More Extensions" link at the bottom of the window to bring up the Firefox Add-ons page. Use the Search function to search for "User Agent Switcher". https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59. Download the User Agent Switcher and restart Firefox to complete the install. Then right-click on the tool bar at the top and select the "Customize..." option. Drag-n-drop the User Agent icon onto the tool bar. Left click the User Agent icon and select the "Netscape 4.8 (Windows Vista)" option. CNN videos will not play correctly.
I haven't played with User Agent Switcher enough to know if the problem is CNN rejecting Firefox, Linux or the combination of the two but spoofing the server as Netscape 4.8 running on Windows Vista works. It will be interesting to see what other spoofing combinations work.

By golly, you are correct. So if we lie to CNN's web server and tell it we are running netscape on windows vista, it lets us watch videos, but not if we tell it we are running firefox on linux. Sigh...
I thought flash was supposed to be this universal runs everywhere thing. Why would they even need to look at what browser is running it?

That is very strange as it is working for me and numerous others. Are you sure that about:plugins reports the flash plugin version as 9.x? What version of Firefox are you running?
Are you perhaps using a different helper action for flash which is pointing to an older version? To check the flash action:

Is it possible that you have more than one version of Shockwave Flash installed? Maybe an older version being found before the 9.x version?

I figured that was the case. Will someone running FF 2.x please confirm whether or not you are able to view the CNN videos using the Agent Switcher spoofing?

I'm not running FF 2.x so I can't help you with this. Perhaps someone else on the list will chime in with some help. But, I suspect this is a red herring.
As Mike Chambers notes you may have to refresh the page after switching to Netscape 4.8(Windows Vista) spoofing. Also try clicking on the video target again in the "Next Up" tab to force the playing of the video. Oh, and recheck the spoofing it may revert to none after restarting the browser.

Note: the above directions are for FF 1.5.0.12. The sequence may differ for FF 2.x.

Sure. But you really should already have this line. First try the 'Filter' line and don't be so specific. Just enter plugins.
Complete instructions that you might not need all of here. Just complete encase someone else wants to know.
-------------------------------------------
Open Firefox
type about:config in the URL line (were the site URLs go)
press <enter>
right click on the screen of config options (I click on a bare spot)
look at the popup menu and click on 'new'
highlight boolean and click on it
type browser.download.hide_plugins_without_extensions in the popup
click the 'ok' button
highlight false and click 'ok' button.
I do *not* know if you have to close and reopen Firefox but I do. -------------------------------------------
BTW A double left click on an already existing line will toggle it or offer you to enter a choice.
Let us know how you make out.

That setting only effects you ability to 'see' the items in the window of the GUI config for Firefox.
Did you add the user-agent-switcher extension like was suggested? And set it foe Vista/Netscape?

Seems a lot of effort to go through, for what reads to be a bit of poor web programming, non?
<soapbox>
I'm a strong proponent of "functioning in spite of things", as it were, and yet...
As the 'Net is absolutely flooded with rather less than skilled and/or experienced developers, we will always be confronted with "stuff" that doesn't work as it should. So, the more workarounds we have (and share), the merrier we are.
However, this shouldn't be allowed to become the accepted norm. When (grabbing a number out of the air) 20% of the surfing public can not access/use a particular service/resource/whatever, it's not correct that the providers of that (whatever) quietly assume "Oh, they'll find a way to deal with it, they always do". Equally wrong, perhaps even more so, is that the 20% stay quiet and actually do "find a way to deal with it", and carry on with their business.
Yes, I will aways want to be able to do my thing in spite of an inhibiting environment. No, I do not want this to be expected of me.
When (for example) a CNN provides attractive content *only* to those who (for example) purchased a MicroSoft product in the last 6 month, a lot of voices should get loud and some virtual shin-kicking should take place. "Dude, your stuff only plays for an 8 year old browser in a 6 month old beta OS. What's wrong with this picture?"

Yeah, I thought that was a nice touch of irony myself. :)

have people bothered to inform CNN of this issue? it would probably only hold water with them if MANY users did this.

Several replies to their "new CNN site blog" mentioned not working with linux. Mine was one of them till they deleted it (probably something to do with my suggestion that they do a news story on how time warner was a microsoft puppet :-).
I don't see the link to the blog on their main page anymore, but it is probably still around if you search for it.

Awesome, ROFLMAO. You never heard of giving a little sugar to keep them sweet?
One of my favorite sayings, doesn't seem apply here directly, is "you get more with a gun and a kind word than you do with a kind word," being a play, of course, on being sweet.

Really scare the business out of them... Tell them you found some blog sites that are better formatted, more real time, and less arrogant, and that news is not the sole property of CNN. You just like their production values, when you can get it on Linux.

I haven't played with User Agent Switcher enough to know if the problem is CNN rejecting Firefox, Linux or the combination of the two but spoofing the server as Netscape 4.8 running on Windows Vista works. It will be interesting to see what other spoofing combinations work.

Well, it didn't play initially after the promo, just like before. BUT, I made sure that the User Agent was set for netscape, went back to cnn.com (I think you can just reload the page as well) and got the videos to work. I think I had one freeze up as before, but reloading the page (I may have reclicked on the video again) got it back to working.

Just got it working as well. Here's what I did: 1) Temporarily disable Greasemonkey script that I use for Fox News 2) Tell UA Switcher to ID as Netscape 4.8 on Vista _before_ attempting to connect to CNN for the first time 3) Reload video page 2 or 3 times
I don't think there's any guarantee it will continue to work though. Based on Gene's e-mail to CNN, I also ran both the main page and the Video page through the HTML validator at W3C. The main page generated 154 errors, with some of them pretty serious and even boneheaded kinds of mistakes. Same for the video page, which reported 74 errors.
Cheers,
Chris

That probably catches a few people. It's common for a site to set some cookie before you try doing something, and that previous cookie can be the downfall of what you wanted to do. In cases like that reloading a page often won't help, as they've already decided not to support you.

Par for the course, unfortunately. I'll go as far as saying that I'm sure *most* web authors do nothing other than test that something works on their own computer. And, that if they had to fiddle around with their browser to get it to work, they expect everyone else to do so, too.

You need to upgrade your Firefox to 2.0. Firefox 1.5 is EOL as of July 2, 2007. Oh, and Firefox 3.0 beta 1 is scheduled for release July 31, 2007.

Yep, you're right but I'm still running FC6 and I think FF 1.5.0.12 is still the latest officially supported FC6 version. I could have upgrade by hand but I don't have any complaints with FF 1.5.0.12 so I decided to wait until I moved all of my systems to F7. I've been waiting for the dust to get well settled and a F7 re-spin before moving to F7. I guess it's time to get on with it and upgrade all of my systems.

I have a workable fox for Fox News.
1) Download Greasemonkey from http://www.greasespot.net 2) Download and install the Fox News Friendly Video script for Greasemonkey (you should be able to do a search for it)
This makes the video play normally, with the added benefit of killing the advertisements.
It doesn't work with CNN's new Flash video though. All I get are the commercials as well - with no actual story...

I'm glad I never watch online videos from news sites. I just did a quick survey:
cnn.com - as others have said, ads, but no actual video
foxnews.com - black screen with sound
abcnews.com - completely unresponsive frozen popup that is presumably supposed to be a video player window.
msnbc.com - Surprise! The Microsoft site has working video in linux :-).

Its not working here for fox news, sound only for the news stories. Some promo's have video though.
Looking at the page srcs, its a generic name 'videoPlayer' they seem to be using.

Plugins that are in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins *also* work with firefox, as it was setup that way, no matter what firefox version you are using. If you put them in your firefox plugin itself, you'll have to keep doing it for each version of firefox.

Are you saying that I can nuke the other 8 or 10 plugins dirs I've got? I tried making all of them softlinks and had that working fairly well when I was running FC2, but hadn't taken the time to sort that all out for FC6 yet...
I've been wishing that somehow, someone would manage to get it all in one sock someday, this 10+ copies of "browsername-version/plugins" dir crap in at least 2 branches of the filesystem tree is a genuine PITA when doing browseer updates and has been for years.

I've found that, for quite some time, probably since FC4, that most plug-ins are automatically installed into /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins, and they work for all browsers.
Almost likewise for search engine plug-ins (they work if put there, but a user can't automatically install them there). Thankfully, someone finally fixed that so users wanting to install search engine plug-ins, can do so - they're installed into their personal space.
The /usr/lib/firefox-x.y.z mish-mash of directories only need to hold things specific to those particular versions of the web browser. Oddly, older ones don't seem to get removed when updating the browser. Well, they're devoid of any files other than the plug-ins, on mine (which are really links to the flash plug-in).

I've seen endless folks say that, yet they never seem to work for me for some reason. What does work is installing them in ~/.mozilla/plugins (but of course that only works for a single user).

i think this whole thread is bringing up an obvious issue with the way firefox plugins are handled - it's a flawed system. it's one of the show stoppers for a lot of people. it was a show stopper for me using 64 bit linux. from an end-user perspective, plugins should not pose such enormous problems.
i am not a developer so this all has to be taken with the proverbial grain of salt. i do, however, think that the mozilla foundation needs to take a serious look at how plugins are handled. i installed linux on my fathers desktop a long time ago. the one (and only) problem that plagued him was plugins with firefox. it unfortunately made him happy to have Windows on his laptop. he could happily watch the goofy movies and such with ease.
there's my $.02 for what it's worth.

Some sanity is placed in all this if you go to: http://stanton-finley.net/ and look at the document: Fedora Core 5 Linux Installation Notes
I know it is for FC5 but it made my FC7 system work relative to firefox plugins.
By the way to answer a question no one asked. If you installed RealPlayer10 from the .bin file and you get the error can't find installation directory. Go to the bash script /usr/bin/realplay and insert the name of the installation directory where indicated, -- ======================================================================= QOTD: "It's been real and it's been fun, but it hasn't been real fun." ======================================================================= Aaron Konstam telephone: (210) 656-0355 e-mail: akonstam@sbcglobal.net

Almost likewise for search engine plug-ins (they work if put there, but a user can't automatically install them there). Thankfully, someone finally fixed that so users wanting to install search engine plug-ins, can do so - they're installed into their personal space.

That's not odd. The plugins directory is not removed because additional files, i.e. plugins (not from original installation), were added.
By the way, the same thing happens in the Windows world.

I know the evil empire does it that way, too. But it's still pointless keeping plug-ins for programs that have been removed. They're not configuration files that you might want access to.
And there's probably a good chance you'd have to re-install them separately, to get them working again, if you'd re-installed the older browser, anyway.

Developer's catch-22: If a user just uninstalls and reinstalls the same package the previous ensemble of plugins. user setting. etc. will not be the same. It's better to get flack for not removing files.

I have a workable fox for Fox News.
Doesn't sound broken to me.
Its not working here for fox news, sound only for the news stories. Some promo's have video though.
Looking at the page srcs, its a generic name 'videoPlayer' they seem to be using.
I just found the plugins dir for FF-2.0.0.4 virtually empty, so I copied all the stuffs from the mozilla plugins dir into it, must make 8 or 10 different plugins dirs I have now, nearly all dups of each other. I can get video for the hbo commercials from cnn, but no news stories. msnbc works, cbs works, abc works but not fox or cnn.

Nah, that's what used to make ie=work, the new improved site they boast about spending so many man hours on doesn't work at all :-).e

Does anyone know what the magic incantation is to make this work again?
Did you take a look at the source code of the web where the video is supposed to be shown? You might find some clue there...

Well, they are clearly using flash, since I only get the play/pause button when I run 32 bit firefox with flash enabled, but even with those buttons, I never get any actual videa.
You could send them feedback saying they ought to run a story about how time warner has become a puppet of microsoft :-).

Fox News has the same problem with Flash Player. It turned out it was something to do with the way they are running advertising. In that case, using the Greasemonkey script that kills the ads (Foxnews Friendly Ads) gets things working again. That doesn't appear to be the case with CNN though - but I'd bet it's something similar.
I'm using the latest beta of Flash Player 9.
Cheers,
Chris

I tried out those videos, and I could see/hear the ads that ran (either in the video's place, or right before the ad), but it would stop (like the actual video was going to play and it wouldn't).
Is that like the foxnews ads thing? What greasemonkey script is that? Below are the programs I am running if that has any bearing...
