You can do much the same by doing:-
yum list '*what_I_am_looking_for*'
except that I think it's case sensitive.
Also:
yum info all > AllPackageInfo
then look at it:
less AllPackageInfo
vim AllPackageInfo
emacs AllPackageInfo
grep -i something AllPackageInfo
The "info" paragraph for most packages is very informative.
