In Gnome, you can use gconf-editor to check/uncheck for icons in
your
desktop. The path is: /apps/nautilus/desktop.
I thought at first that was over my head, but I played around a
little, and found it. (I do run Gnome.) It took effect as soon as I
logged out and back in.
