Try:
getent passwd username | cut -d: -f3
Substitute "username" with the username you're interested in.

awk -F":" ' { print "UID: "$3" \tName: "$1 } '
/etc/passwd
to get a full list. Normally all user ids >=500 are mortal user accounts.
