Methinks Andy is seeing the likes of
$ mkdir testdir $ echo This is a test > testdir/.testfile $ cd testdir $ grep -i -r -l this * grep: No match.
My favorite..
find . -print | xargs grep -i <string>
Slower, but in my experince, pretty bulletproof.
