I don't think that is true - I'm pretty sure GIMP performs most tasks internally or through plug-ins.

ImageMagick is a separate command-line image processing tool and also very useful in batch processing. There are tons of howtos out there on using ImageMagick. Once I even printed out the output of 'man convert'. Be sure you have plenty of toner/paper before you try that though :)

I thought I noticed that imagemagick was installed as a dependency with gimp so that led me to that conclusion.
