Thanks, the server is a used proliant. I've used them several time. This
one had 2 nics in it and I assumed it would not be a problem since the
cards were already installed. I've never had 2 nics at once. I assumed the
intallation would handle it, didn't give it much thought... my error.
I'll give the ifdown/ifup a shot tonight.
Where is the config file that I can comment out the "activate on boot" for
eth1?

There is at least part of your problem. eth1 is the interface you said you
do not have a cable connected to. Try doing ifdown eth0, ifdown eth1, and
then do an ifup eth0. Then see what interface your default route is
through.
It should then be pointed at eth0.
Question, why do you have 2 interfaces on the same network up at the same
time?
If you are planning to turn thei into a firewall then the addresses for
each
interface should be on 2 different networks.
