But without monitor you really don't need X (and you are managing the computer through ssh for example).
X Window client apps work just fine through ssh without a monitor on the remote computer. I often do that when managing servers when I prefer the X Window tool (e.g, gvim vs. vim). No X Window server is needed on the remote computer, but the X Window client libs and fonts are useful.
