Why not? They are multiple times faster and have a lot more space. If you're concerned about reliability, make multiple backups. Over time it will be much cheaper as well. (And more environmentally friendly.) ;-)
Although I wouldn't personally use thumbdrives for backup, mainly because of having to keep track of them, an external 1TB drive costs under $50 and a 2TB under $65. That's equivalent to several hundred DVDs in capacity and orders of magnitude faster in speed. Plus it's read/write capable and can be used for incremental backups without a lot of faffing around.
Ok, I thought you were agreeing with using DVDs for backup. I agree that for large volumes an external hard drive is definitely the best. Also network storage for backups that don't need to go off-site.
