I'm not sure what I've done but suddenly the time to boot has gone from about two minutes to what seems like about five minutes more. Toward the end of the boot process it dwells on starting ntpd, starting sendmail, and starting smb-client. The rest of the boot process seems normal.
Which leads me to believe you have made changes to your /etc/hosts file somewhere along the line. Please post the contents of this file.
Yes, I added two lines to /etc/hosts:
cat /etc/hosts # Do not remove the following line, or various programs # that require network functionality will fail. 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
This is fine.
localhost <<----
The line above needs to be removed.
10.1.1.1 box1 box1 10.1.1.2 box2 box2
The second 'box1' & 'box2' need to be fully qualified I believe.
It has to be the fully qualified domain name. Sendmail in particular looks up the /etc/hosts file on startup.
I also remember having seen a delay caused by nfs mount, if you dont add 'nolock' to the mount options.
