It depends. For /dev/fd0, members of the floppy group also have read
and write access. But the floppy group only has read access to the
devices like /dev/fdu1440 that have a specific format. (I believe it
is the same for the other floppy drives, but I have not checked.)
Because my user is a member of the floppy group, I can format
floppies using /dev/fd0. Why the rest do not have the same
permissions I leave to someone else.
