Tried that, and I know prelinking is now turned off, but I have the
same symptoms as before.

Undo the prelinking. It breaks the win32 DLL mechanism good.
Change PRELINKING to NO on /etc/sysconfig/prelink , rerun the cron
script
and try again.
Worked for me time and again. I ended up removing prelinking for good.
