docker firewall?
by Alex
Hi,
I'm a long-time Linux sysadmin but haven't done much with docker and
containers or firewalls beyond iptables. I have inherited a fedora38 system
where another admin has installed python3-docker, but port 8080 is now
exposed to the Internet.
I have a basic iptables firewall that I set up some time ago (when the
system was probably fedora35), but iptables also shows some docker rules:
# iptables -nvL|grep ^Chain|grep DOCKER
Chain DOCKER (2 references)
Chain DOCKER-ISOLATION-STAGE-1 (1 references)
Chain DOCKER-ISOLATION-STAGE-2 (2 references)
Where do these chains/policies come from? Is it also an iptables firewall
or is it using ufw?
Why wouldn't it use firewall-cmd? Isn't that the default desktop firewall
app now for fedora?

firebird-emu (Virtual Ti-Nspire emulator) on Fedora 38
by olivares33561
Dear fellow fedora users,
I have installed firebird-emu : https://github.com/nspire-emus/firebird
I followed instructions, namely
dnf config-manager --add-repo https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:Vogtinator:firebird-emu/F...
dnf install firebird-emu
and installed it. Since there is no Fedora 38 link. I tried rpmfusions one and it crashed. I have done this several times. I gave up and tried the one on Votinator repo. It works partially, but I cannot load it. On an amd64 machine, it works, but there is no keypad. How can these errors be fixed?
I cannot load flash/boot in configuration.
I get error:

Upgraded machine to Fedora 38 and now suspending after 15 minues??
by Michael D. Setzer II
Have 4 machines that are headless machines.
Boot up, and have VNC run to allow access using XFCE sessions.
After upgrading the one to Fedora 38, have the machine going off
after 15 minutes since no user is logged in locally to machine??
Found a page that mentions these options.
sudo -u gdm dbus-run-session gsettings list-recursively
org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power | grep sleep
sudo -u gdm dbus-run-session gsettings set
org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power
sleep-inactive-ac-timeout 0
But after doing it on machine with VNC session, it still was
shutting off since vnc is running XFCE?
Hooked up monitor, and logged in using gnome, and went in power
options and it seemed to show and auto suspend option and turned
it off. See if that keeps it up, but there was a not on site that if all
users logged out, machines would go back to 15 minute suspend??
Hasn't been 15 minutes? So not sure if logging in with gnome and
turning off the suspend will keep it up.
This was my backup machine that doesn't have anything other than
BOINC running on it, but others have web, mariadb and other
things running so shutting down after 15 minutes is a NO GO...
Is there a best way to correct this?
Installing lightdm maybe and disabling the gdm completely.
Thanks. This is a major issue for my setup.

mirrored monitor problems
by Robert Moskowitz
I have an external monitor connected to my F38 Xfc3 system.
When I resumed from suspend Sat night, I had problems getting it
recognized; that is behind me.
Every so often the external monitor goes off, then back on. I can't
tell if it is the system or the monitor.
It just happened and I got the messages that occured around that time:

Are these in anyway connected to the monitor blanking? The first one
almost seems so...

slowness with kernel 6.4.10 and software raid
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I am at a bit of a loss. After about two months, I decided to reboot a few days ago, and rebooted into 6.4.10 kernel. Everything came up, but the machine is very unresponsive, and practically unusable when I am at it. It is better when working on it remote, but it is still slower.
I was going to reboot but I came up with the following:
$ reboot
Operation inhibited by "Disk Manager" (PID 1044 "udisksd", user root), reason is "Unknown (mdraid-check-job)".
Please retry operation after closing inhibitors and logging out other users.
Alternatively, ignore inhibitors and users with 'systemctl reboot -i'.
This pointed me to the possibility of the issue being raid. So, I looked at
$ cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [raid1]
md126 : active raid1 sda[1] sdc[0]
1855870976 blocks super external:/md127/0 [2/2] [UU]
[=>...................] check = 8.8% (165001216/1855870976) finish=45465.2min speed=619K/sec
md127 : inactive sda[1](S) sdc[0](S)
10402 blocks super external:imsm
unused devices: <none>
I am not sure what it is doing, and I am a bit concerned that this will go on at this rate for about 20 days. No knowing what will happen after that, and also if this problem will recur with another reboot.
The machine is a 10 core, 20-thread Dell T5810. It is running a fully updated Fedora 38 installation.
Any help/suggestions on what to do?
Many thanks and best wishes,
Ranjan

Screen casting - help wanted
by Peter Boy
We have a new Quick Docs article about comparison of various screen casting tools in Fedora:
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/screencast-apps-comparison/
Everybody who used such a tool more or less recently, please habe a short look at the article and provide us with feedback
- is it adequate for Fedora 37/38/
- is something wrong
- is something missing
You may use the Issue (bug) button in the bar below the blue header to easily open a feedback form.
May thanks.

window sharing broken with current F38+kde+wayland
by Neal Becker
For online meetings I have always used share window (as opposed to sharing
a chrome tab or entire screen). Recently this has been broken.
Using current F38+kde+wayland.
Tested on teams and on google meet (same interface, must be part of KDE I
think).
If I select a window to share the tab for that window on the task manager
disappears, which gives me no way to move my cursor to that window and do
the presentation.
I find share a screen still works fine, and I guess I'll have to use that
for now.
Seems some recent change. Along with it also there is a change to the way
the dialog for sharing appears, and for some reason you need to go through
2 different dialogs the confirm sharing 2 times. This again is a recent
change.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Neal

Creating a bridge
by Alex
Hi,
I've just installed fedora38 over my previous fedora install but didn't
save my network config that included a bridge to allow for local IPs for my
virtual machines. Is there a network tool that I can use to create a bridge
so I can then use the bridge option with virt-manager to assign IPs to my
Win10 virtual machine?
I'm used to doing the old-school network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 stuff by hand,
but realize that doesn't exist anymore.
Perhaps someone has a basic /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections bridge
config they could paste here to get me started or the proper nmcli commands
I need?
I suppose I could probably also use NAT, but I'd rather have my gateway
doing the NAT.
