screen blanking, dpms, screen force on

Dear fedora users,
In previous versions of fedora, the commands
/*****
export DISPLAY=:0
/usr/bin/xset dpms force on;
/usr/bin/xset -dpms;
******/
would force screen on and then to return to screen blanking
/******
#/usr/bin/xset +dpms;
/usr/bin/xset dpms force off;
********/
now they do not work like before.
[olivares@fedora ~]$ /usr/bin/xset -dpms

[olivares@fedora ~]$ /usr/bin/xset dpms force off

convert crontab jobs to systemd timers
by olivares33561
Dear kind Fedora users,
I have a crontab file that I use to play some files about 3 minutes before bell rings between classes. I had to install anacron with dnf command. I have seen emails where some folks recommend systemd timers. How can I convert a crontab
#
[olivares@fedora Downloads]$ crontab -l
# min hour day-of-month month day-of-week command
# 0-59 0-23 1-31 1-12 0-6 0=sun 1=mon
#50 04 * * 1-5 ~/.xalarm >/dev/null 2>&1
#50 04 * * 0,6 ~/.salarm >/dev/null 2>&1
#59 09 * * 0,6 ~/.salarm >/dev/null 2>&1
#00 07 * * 1-5 ~/.xalarm >/dev/null 2>&1
42 08 * * 1-5 ~/.dalarm >/dev/null 2>&1
52 09 * * 1-5 ~/.dalarm >/dev/null 2>&1
40 10 * * 1-5 ~/.dalarm >/dev/null 2>&1
28 11 * * 1-5 ~/.dalarm >/dev/null 2>&1
16 12 * * 1-5 ~/.dalarm >/dev/null 2>&1
57 12 * * 1-5 ~/.dalarm >/dev/null 2>&1

28 15 * * 1-5 ~/.dalarm >/dev/null 2>&1
17 16 * * 1-5 ~/.dalarm >/dev/null 2>&1
#30 16 * * 1-5 ~/.lalarm > /dev/null 2>&1
25 16 * * 1-5 /usr/sbin/poweroff >/dev/null 2>&1
#
to systemd timers? An easy idiot proof way. The .dalarm script calls mplayer and plays from a playlist.

[olivares@fedora Downloads]$ sudo systemctl list-timers

Pass --all to see loaded but inactive timers, too.

I have read https://opensource.com/article/20/7/systemd-timers
and

but have not tried it out. Any help on this is appreciated. I want to test it out. Thank you in advance

audio problem
by Eyal Lebedinsky
I am on f34 5.15.16-100.fc34.x86_64
This problem started recently (a few weeks, maybe a little longer?).
Initially I noticed audio hiccups when playing mythtv recordings. At times there was also video noise
but not always.
I then found that playing audio from a network stream (with vlc) also had hiccups. The sound would
stop and start, sometime even repeat a fraction of a second.
I now played a track from a local disk and the same issues were heard.
There are no messages to indicate a problem. I then used 'mplayer' which has more console messages
and I now can see an issue:

I get similar problems with [HDMI 3] and with [ALC887-VD Analog] selected using pavucontrol.
lspci shows
Audio device: Intel Corporation Cannon Lake PCH cAVS (rev 10)
What can I do now to diagnose the problem?
One more data point: for a long time (many months) I had a problem where the system locks up hard
needing a cold restart. There were no hiccups otherwise. It always had mythtv playing or YouTube.
When locked the sound of the last second would loop continuously until the reset. The video is frozen then.
Maybe related? This is a long running problem (happens once every few months) but the audio stutter
is a recent, new issue.
TIA

nm: /usr/lib64/libmpfr.so.6: no symbols
by Michael Hennebry
nm: /usr/lib64/libmpfr.so.6: no symbols
I recently changed to F35 partly in the hope it would have gappa 1.4
instead of F33's gappa 1.3 .
No such luck, so I am trying to build from source.
./configure complains
checking for mpfr_snprintf in -lmpfr... no
configure: error: *** Unable to find MPFR (>=2.4) library
(http://www.mpfr.org/)
hennebry@fedora ~]$ locate mpfr.so
/usr/lib64/libmpfr.so.6
/usr/lib64/libmpfr.so.6.1.0
[hennebry@fedora ~]$ nm -a /usr/lib64/libmpfr.so.6
nm: /usr/lib64/libmpfr.so.6: no symbols
[hennebry@fedora ~]$ nm -a /usr/lib64/libmpfr.so.6.1.0
nm: /usr/lib64/libmpfr.so.6.1.0: no symbols
[hennebry@fedora ~]$
[hennebry@fedora ~]$ strings /usr/lib64/libmpfr.so.6.1.0 | grep mpfr_snprintf
mpfr_snprintf
What is going on?
With no symbols, how is the library ever used?
I'd thought nm -a was supposed to list all of them.
BTW I did eventually realize that libmpfr.so.6 is a soft link to the other.

Attempting mount of Bootable CD/DVD gives "Can't open blockdev"
message
by George R Goffe
Hi,
I'm not sure what to do about this problem.
Is it a broken device? I'm seeing "no media found" messages too.
blockdev /dev/sr0 says:
fc37-bash 5.1 ~# blockdev /dev/cdrom
blockdev: cannot open /dev/cdrom: No medium found
fc37-bash 5.1 ~# blockdev --report /dev/cdrom
RO RA SSZ BSZ StartSec Size Device
rw 256 512 512 0 1073741312 /dev/cdrom
mount says:
fc37-bash 5.1 ~# mount /dev/cdrom /mnt
mount: /mnt: no medium found on /dev/sr0.
dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.
dmesg | tail -3 says:
[ 2159.692983] /dev/sr0: Can't open blockdev
[ 2908.948008] /dev/sr0: Can't open blockdev
[ 3597.306199] /dev/sr0: Can't open blockdev
I have tried inserting an old (1996) bootable cd media AND a quite recent "live" DVD media from Fedora Core 36/7 with the same messages. Booting from the DVD using an external CD/DVD player (NOT the broken(?) one) does work. I have not tried the old cd at all recently (1996). Any attempt to use the internal(?) CD/DVD fails.
eject /dev/sr0 DOES work though.
Again, is the device broken? What else should I try?
Best regards and STAY SAFE.

Temporary XFCE Thunar weirdness
by Sam Varshavchik
Something weird happened after I installed a bunch of updates and rebooted.
There were no kernel updates, or anything that I recall might be related.
Normally I have a lone "File System" icon that opens up Thunar.
After the reboot I got half a dozen icons. I recall a "Root Filesystem"
icon, a "proc" icon, a "sys" icon; an icon for every filesystem mount point.
It was really weird.
Additionally attaching my MP3 player, a usb-storage device, elicited no
response, it was not getting auto-mounted.
I tried logging out and in, without any changes.
After another reboot things were back to normal. Just the "File System" icon
that, obediently, launched Thunar. My usb-storage device was getting auto-
mounted just fine.
Has anyone else seen this before, and know what's up? I'd be curious to know
if there's a way to fix this up without rebooting.

Unlogging
by Beartooth
Recent releases (I"m running F35) seem to log me out at certain
times, regardless of what I'm doing. I want not ever to get logged out.
How and where do I set that?

/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lmpfr

/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lmpfr
As mentioned in another thread, I am trying to compile gappa 1.4 .
./configure LDFLAGS=-L/usr/lib64 complains

configure:4703: g++ -o conftest -g -O2 -L/usr/lib64/ conftest.cpp -lmpfr -lgmp

/usr/lib64/libmpfr.so.6 /usr/lib64/libmpfr.so.6.1.0
[hennebry@fedora ~]$
What is going on?
How do I deal?
configure is written in the obfuscated shell generated by autotools.
Editing that seems unlikely to be successful.

How to install F35
by Michael Hennebry
How does one install F35?
I've got the workstation iso on a DVD.
It runs, but clicking on install seems to have little or no effect.
I certainly do not get any prompts for the next step.
What is the magic formula?
BTW I do not have the wiggle room for dual boot.
I backed up my home directory and edited
my partitions before running the DVD.
Do I need to have an internet connection available to do the install?
The first time I tried this, an "update" or whatever
it was doing took over an hour before I gave up.
I'd prefer a separate update step that I can watch.
The joy of installion is a reason I do it so rarely.
