Is there an equivalent to 40_custom with EFI boot?
by Michael D. Setzer II
Wondering if possible to add non-Fedora options to EFI boot menu with some
method similar to the 40_Custom. Thanks.
I've maintained a project on Sourceforge going back to 2004, and it was
originally a cd only boot option, but over years create usb and ability to boot
directly from grub2 menu using 40_custom.
Few years ago, created EFI boot options that work with cd and usb using
grub4dos and grub4dosefi as boot loaders. Have looked for a process similar to
40_custom for EFI, but have not located anything.
The 40_custom is very simple.
# !/bin/sh
exec tail -n +3 $0
# This file provides an easy way to add custom menu entries. Simply type the
# menu entries you want to add after this comment. Be careful not to change
# the 'exec tail' line above.
menuentry G4L_Version_0.62_video_800x600 {
set gfxpayload=800x600x16,800x600
linux /bz6x0.12 root=/dev/ram0 telnetd=yes
initrd /ramdisk.lzma
}
Has the kernal file and ramdisk.lzma in the /boot directory and loads program
directly from grub2 boot menu.
With grub4dos regular boot the menu has this for booting.
title G4L - bz6x0.12 - with vga=788
find --set-root /linux/bz6x0.12
kernel /linux/bz6x0.12 root=/dev/ram0 vga=788 telnetd=yes
initrd /linux/ramdisk.lzma
Also have this to run memtest since regular Fedora one doesn't seem to work??
title memtest
find --set-root /memtest86+-5.31b.iso
#Uses memdisk from syslinux 6.04pre1
kernel /memdisk iso
initrd /memtest86+-5.31b.iso
In the EFI/grub/menu.list have to boot. memtest doesn't work with the EFI boot
so no option for that.
title G4L - bz6x0.12 - Version 0.62 Default Screen Resolution
find --set-root /linux/bz6x0.12
kernel /linux/bz6x0.12 root=/dev/ram0 telnetd=yes
initrd /linux/ramdisk.lzma

Dealing with "Emergency Mode"
by Geoffrey Leach
When things come ungluded on booting, the user is offered a root login,
which seems to be referred to as "Emergency Mode"
journalctl is suggested as a place to start looking for causes. In the
output there are no priority 0 and 1 (and perhaps 2) problems. Running
the reboot with display of the process (I forget exactly how I edited
the boot command) shows nothing of interest.
fedora-live runs without problems, and I'm able to reinstall 37 and
reboot it. One the next reboot - or the one after that, I'm back in
Emergency Mode.
So, as I'm about to reboot :-(, Wish me luck

where did all of these *$!#!! icons come form
by Geoffrey Leach
So, while installing Fedora 37 XFCE for the third time (don't ask) when
after a reboot, the screed is flooded with file icons. Not my choice,
needless to say.
Could someone please tell me how to suppress the icons?
Thanks.

how to disable local email delivery
by Eyal Lebedinsky
I have a domain eyal.emu.id.au which can receive email to many users.
My server at home calls itself eyal.emu.id.au. As such, locally generated mail often goes directly
to my spool at /var/spool/mail/
For example,
echo "from e7 cli to eyal(a)eyal.emu.id.au" | mail -s 'test' eyal(a)eyal.emu.id.au
ends up locally, but
echo "from e7 cli to upstream smtp" | mail -s 'test' eyal(a)UPSTREAM.SERVER.au
does get relayed, and ends up on my MX server.
The reason? When I am away from home I can access the MX server and read/fetch my email.
I cannot read local email on my home server.
I want this (spooling) to not happen, but have all mail relayed to my upstream SMTP server which is the SMART_HOST
defined in sendmail.mc.
How can I force it?

Sycing to Memotoo w SyncEvolution post-Fedora 37 upgrade
by Max Pyziur
Greetings,
I've been trying to sync my data today with memotoo, and I keep getting
failure notices.
I'm using both the UI as well as the CLI. I'm not sure how to check the
error or problem.
When using the CLI, here is my output:
syncevolution --run --sync refresh-from-local memotoo
[INFO] memo: inactive
[INFO] todo: inactive
[ERROR syncevo-dbus-server] child process quit because of signal 11
[ERROR] The connection is closed
Not knowing if this is material, checking via ps waux:
~> ps waux | grep sync
pyz 4617 0.0 0.3 527156 28108 ? Ssl 15:40 0:00
/usr/libexec/syncevo-dbus-server
pyz 4829 0.0 0.0 222024 2088 pts/1 S+ 15:42 0:00 grep
--color=auto sync
I can access my data on the memotoo website. It appears to sync with my
phone.
I recently upgraded (in the last two weeks) to F37. I don't know if this
is the first sync that I have tried since, however.
I have tried posting this message to the syncevolution email list with no
reply. I know that there have been some changes to Evolution email lists;
I don't know if there has been a spillover to syncevolution.
Any guidance would be appreciated; thank you.

libnvidvia
by Bill Cunningham
I have the hand brake cli installed in my f37 distro environment.
It complains it wants libnvidia-encoder.so1 library or such. I have
tried dnf provides and I get nothing from the standard fedora 37 repo as
well as rpmfusion's free repo. This must be required in creating a mv4
from an ISO from a DVD created using genisoimage. Does anyone know an
answer to this? I am not finding this shared library. Trying to create
using,
HandBrakeCLI -i iso.iso -o iso.m4v ,
gives errors but there's no breaking. The CLI reports 10% done but
doesn't advance any farther than that.

Heads-up: Google Chrome repo disabled on Fedora upgrade
by Chris Adams
I upgraded several systems from Fedora 35 to 37 a few weeks ago. I
realized yesterday that one (my primary desktop of course) was not
getting updates to Google Chrome, which has had some important security
fixes recently. I realized that the Google Chrome yum repo had been
disabled - checking my backups, it was disabled when I did the upgrade
from 35 to 37.
I'm not sure why that happened (and why only on one system, out of at
least four with that repo enabled and Chrome installed), but others that
have done Fedora release upgrades (via dnf system-upgrade) and use
Chrome from the yum repo might want to check that it's still enabled (so
they're still getting security updates).

vlc and mp4 or mkv
by Bill Cunningham
idk if anyone is having this problem or not, but creating a mp4 or mpg
using vlc seems to be impossible. I have been trying with windows and
IDK if that makes a difference but I also have the f37 live workstation
environment. I can decrypt a dvd, copy and watch a dvd, and even create
an iso using genisoimage. I cannot though create an mp4 or mpg.
My latest attempt seemed to copy a title video_ts copy and convert
that but the "link in the chain" to other VOBs and such did not
continue. This is in regards to vlc which runs on windows and linux, but
I have tried several codecs together. aac, aac3, mp4 and mpg, and mkv.
There is something always off.
IDK if this is helpful in regards to a problem. But I try to save
movies/videos as an iso or if there is no special feature a much smaller
mpeg. vlc seems to be unbelievably complex if it can create/convert an
ISO or VOBs to mpg4 or another container format.
Has anyone else struggled with this problem and found a solution?
Can these things be done using the live image workstation?
