Well obviously, it WAS necessary in order to get rid of an objectionable
and annoying message, which was otherwise impossible to get rid of.

Wow! So running as root causes error messages? Pull the other leg, it
has bells on it!
And why? Because this was immediately after a clean install to a brand
new drive, while I was still running upgrades and transferring files
from backup. Much easier to do that as root, so that is what I do. If
you want to type sudo a hundred times, go right ahead.
Running as root is not a disaster. Get over it.

lightnight not set properly
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
I am missing something.
My light night is not set properly.
i.e., the sunset/sunrise is wrong while the machine has the correct time.
I guess that there is a geolocalisation missing.
Thanks

That sounds like a dbus error. Have you seen any indication of an
SELinux denial? If not, run "journalctl -x" in a terminal and search
for "Sender is not authorized to send message". Does it appear? If
so, what are the lines immediately above and below that?
*************
It was apparently something to do with selinux. I usually disable
selinux as the first or second thing I do to a new install. I forgot to
do that.
A quick edit to /etc/selinux/config and a reboot solved removed the
annoyance. (I cannot say 'solved the problem as I have no idea what the
actual problem was: this was the 'sledge-hammer for walnuts' resolution.)
Now how you deciphered that that was where the error came from is just
further evidence that far too much of system management is arcane magic:
Clarke's Law: Any sufficiently advanced technology is
indistinguishable from magic.
Oddly 1) I was running as root... so *who/what* was the 'unauthorized
sender'? and
2) Journalctl showed NOTHING about errors.
Thanks for the help Jerry

Installing new SSD drive
by Javier Perez
Hi.
This is a personal project for a Home server.
It has a 2T HDD divided into 5 partitions.
[root@###### ~]# lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda 8:0 0 1.8T 0 disk
├─sda1 8:1 0 1G 0 part /boot
├─sda2 8:2 0 260M 0 part /boot/efi
├─sda3 8:3 0 28G 0 part /
├─sda4 8:4 0 4G 0 part [SWAP]
└─sda5 8:5 0 1.8T 0 part /Shared_Media
I plan to add a 120G SDD
to install the OS on the SDD and keep /Shared_Media's partition on the HDD.
Eventually I want to convert it to a Raid 1 sysyem. My idea is to copy
/Shared media to a new disk, in a degenerate Raid and then repartition the
original HDD and add it to the Raid.
My question is how to pass the OS to the SSD? I know the easiest way is
just install on the SSD from a USB and then add the /Shared_Media to the
file system.
But I wanted to use this as a learning/game up skills opportunity.
Is there an easy way to transfer the OS with the current software load and
customizations (/etc/*)?
Is it wise nowadays to create a swap partition on the SSD? It is a M.2 WD
Green
Thanks for whatever light you might shed on this case.
JP

Media writer/USB Flash -

When I put a Fedora .iso on a flash drive it leaves read-only files that
I always have difficulty clearing if I want to reuse the flash drive for
something other than media-writer.
What should I do to clear the drive?

system-config-kickstart
by Gordon Messmer
I don't need to use system-config-kickstart very often, but I do tend to
recommend it to colleagues who are starting out automating setup
processes. I've just noticed for the first time that the package is no
longer available, because it was never ported to Python 3/GTK 3:
https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/system-config-kickstart
The retirement message indicates that users should use Anaconda instead,
and while I see that you can install anaconda-gui, I don't see a way to
use it to create a kickstart file on a running system. Am I missing
something, or is the installation process now the only program that
creates a kickstart file from scratch?

How to get rid of a kernel message spamming the journal?
by Lester M Petrie
Hi,
I am getting the following message written to the journal every 60
seconds. It is frequently at least half the journal. I know what
kernel_lockdown is, but I have no idea what "pmdakvm" is.
Jun 06 12:36:02 machinename.localdomain kernel: Lockdown: pmdakvm:
debugfs access is restricted; see man kernel_lockdown.7
I am running F31, and dual booting a uefi machine, if that makes any
difference.
