xsane -
by Bob Goodwin
Xsane can't see my scanner as user bobg, as root is detected.
bobg]# scanimage -L
device `genesys:libusb:001:006' is a Canon LiDE 110 flatbed scanner
[bobg@Workstation-1 ~]$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 04a9:1909 Canon, Inc. CanoScan LiDE 110
$ sane-find-scanner
could not open USB device 0x04a9/0x1909 at 001:006: Access denied
(insufficient permissions)
I have no idea what permissions need fixing. Xsane was installed as su
root and I tried reinstall from sudo from bobg, that made no difference.
I rarely need the scanner and today when I do it wont work in Fedora 31
updated today.
What have I done wrong?

Cron sometimes starts two jobs from the same crontab entry
by Terry Barnaby
I have a simple backup system that starts off a backup once per night
during the weekdays. There is a crontab file in /etc/cron.d with the
following entries:
################################################################################
# Beam Bbackup cron setup Backup to ...
################################################################################
#
# Min Hour Day Month WeekDay
# Perform incremental backup to every work day
01 23 * * 1 root /src/bbackup/bbackup-beam
01 23 * * 2 root /src/bbackup/bbackup-beam
01 23 * * 3 root /src/bbackup/bbackup-beam
01 23 * * 4 root /src/bbackup/bbackup-beam
01 23 * * 5 root /src/bbackup/bbackup-beam
This system has been in use for 10 years or more on various Fedora
versions. However about 18 months ago I have seen a problem where cron
will start two backups with identical start times occasionally.
I have had to add a file lock system in the bbackup-beam to cope with this.
Any idea on why cron might start the same job off twice at the same time
? Could there be a time change issue with chronyd ?

Blocking login attempts by country
by Richard Shaw
I got tired of repeated SSH attempts and honest for my home network,
there's few countries that need to be logging into my system, so I'm using

I created this script to make my life easier and thought I would share it.

Move files into storage device -
by Bob Goodwin
°
I connected a WD Mycloud storage device to my LAN and would like to
transfer some files from this Fedora 31 computer to it. Although it
seems to work well enough with the iPhones it is primarily an Apple or
Windows device and does not appear to be Linux friendly. Is there a way
to load some files from this box directly without sending them to an ios
device first? I am hoping someone has has experience with one of these,
I don't need it but it's there for the ios users on my system ...
Thanks Bob

remind
by David A. De Graaf
What's happened to the remind and tkremind packages?
I just discovered, to my horror, they're not available in Fedora 31.
I'm going to have to contend with a lot of unhappy birthday celebrants.

Virtual Box not loading vboxdrv on Clean install of Fedora 31
by Michael D. Setzer II
Setting up a new system with Fedora 31, but run into a problem with
VirtualBox
On running Virtual Box I get this message??
WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no
module
available for the current kernel (5.5.13-200.fc31.x86_64) or it failed to
load. Please try load the kernel module by executing as root
dnf install akmod-VirtualBox kernel-devel-5.5.13-200.fc31.x86_64
akmods --kernels 5.5.13-200.fc31.x86_64 && systemctl restart
systemd-modules-load.service
You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed.
I do the recommended options.
dnf packages are already installed
The akmods builds the moduals, and they are in the location
But restarting the systemd-modules-load results in error.
Running what it recommends for getting results with this, but can't find any
recommendations??
On exact same machine with Fedora 29, this was working. This is a clean
install on a new hard disk.
Any ideals?

LVM Merge hangs at 100%
by Sreyan Chakravarty
LVM merging from snapshots don't work.
I have two logical volume - one is for the entire system and one is a
snapshot that I have created if I want to revert things if an upgrade
breaks them.
This is the output of *lvs*
LV VG Attr LSize Pool Origin Data% Meta% Move
Log Cpy%Sync Convert
before_upgrade vgfedora swi-a-s--- 30.00g fedora 22.84
fedora vgfedora owi-aos--- 50.00g
Now I perform my upgrade by running *sudo dnf upgrade -y*, the upgrade
completes without any problems.
Now if I want to revert back to my old system state that is the snapshot
*before_upgrade*, I boot into a Live Fedora 31 environment and open my
encrypted partition using
$ cryptsetup open /dev/sda3 dm_crypt
And I issue the command:
$ lvconvert --merge /dev/vgfedora/before_upgrade
This works as expected until it hits 100%:
vgfedora/fedora: Merged: 99.59%
vgfedora/fedora: Merged: 99.90%
vgfedora/fedora: Merged: 100.00%
It hangs completely.
It has been almost 3 hours and I have not seen the status change.
Hitting *Ctrl + C* now will produce the following output:
^C Interrupted...
Giving up waiting for lock.
Can't get lock for vgfedora
Can't reread VG for vgfedora/fedora error flags 2
If I reboot the restoration has not been done and the logical volume
*before_upgrade* has vanished.
Here is my layout:

What is going on ?
Interestingly I have tried the same thing in other distributions like
Ubuntu and this works. So seems like a Fedora specific issue.
Let me know if any other information is required, like any other log files.
Thanks.

sort of Rawhide related
by David
I am a novice user of Fedora Rawhide.
Today, I did a fresh new clean install ( on an cheap old SSD ) of Rawhide
as my only operating system.
I used the nightly compose finder, and chose "Workstation live"
for X86_64, using the last good iso "20200325."
This was probably my 5th time to install Rawhide
on hardware in the past year or two.
I have been using Xfce in Rawhide for over 3 months, and I was
biased against it from the start, so I can not give a fair review. Fedora
Xfce
just seemed so 2016, even in Rawhide.
The final straw was that Firefox 75 is coming out soon ( with better
wayland improvements ), and I missed wayland. Xfce probably
won't get wayland for a long time. Right ?
I use a lot of gnome apps ( but in flatpaks ).
One of the first things I do after an install, is play FreeCell in
Aisleriot Solitaire to see if I "feel anything," as I have played this
game about 1,000 times ( maybe 10,000, LOL ! )
Anyways, I updated the packages, turned on the available 3rd party
repo, installed flathub, powered off, installed flatpak of Aisleriot,
rebooted,
just to test reboot, and then played
a game, and here I am. I installed htop ( fc32 ) and, it all looks good
from here. I surfed the web, watched YouTube.
All is nominal and functional from that perspective.
LibreOffice preinstalled. Utility apps are already all grouped together
so that looks nice.
I am sending this email using this new install.

Anaconda question
by David
Once a user gets their computer running on Fedora, is there
any reason to keep anaconda and its associated dependencies ?
Is there any reason to delete it ?
Is there any reason to update it everytime it updates ?
