Home Routers (Totally OT)
by Jonathan Ryshpan
I have just replaced my old home router, which had stopped working,
with a Trendnet AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Router, model TEW-818DRU. I
need to replace the Trendnet router because I am totally unhappy with
it. However, since the Trendnet router was recommended by some sites
which I usually trust, like Cnet, I'm reaching out to people who may
know something about networking. (I know very little.) Can anyone
recommend a router that actually works?
Let's start with the problems with the Trendnet router. Here is the
table of connected devices.
Wired Connected Devices
#
IP Address
MAC Address
Host Name
1192.168.10.102C8:1F:66:0B:98:B
4Oaklandweather2192.168.10.10114:DD:A9:7E:4C:52amito3192.168.10.10388:3
6:5F:F7:0C:95android-a81a750feb8c4486
1. What is the device android-a81a750feb8c4486? There are only two
devices connected to the router by wires. Very odd.
2. The router has a DNS server in it. The server doesn't know
anything about any of these devices, so I will have to set up
/etc/hosts in all of the computers in the local net manually. Trendnet
customer support has informed me that this is not a bug but a feature.
3. There are issues with the way the router's DHCP sets up the
attached computers so that searches aren't referred to higher level
servers in my local net. More devices have to be entered into
/etc/hosts by hand.
Does anyone know what's going on here? Can anyone recommend a router
that handles networking properly and that puts out a strong signal for
my wireless hot spot?
Many Thanks - jon

How to customize an install.img image
by Francis.Montagnac@inria.fr
Hi.
We would like to add some RPMs to the install.img image for deploying
servers with PXE.
I have found this documentation:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_create_a_Fedora_install_ISO_for_tes...
but it seems rather outdated (the pungi command do not exist any more,
and the pungi-koji one do not seems to have the same syntax) and I
don't find the kickstart file to use for the Server install.img image.
Any idea to how to do that?
Thanks.
I know that one may use an updates.img image but it will be tedious to
build it without having the list of RPMs of the current install.img
image.

NFS mount from VM -
by Bob Goodwin
I have an Fedora 28 computer with Fedora 27 running in virtual manager.
My NFS server refuses its connection although the Fedora28 computer
itself connects routinely. Ping and ssh can connect to the NFS server
from the VM. Stopping Firewalld and setenforce 0 in the VM make no
difference.
NFS exports is:
[bobg@ASRock-J3455M ~]$ cat /etc/exports
/home/exports
192.168.1.0/24(rw,sync,insecure,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check)
Can anyone suggest what I might have wrong?

strange vlc error
by François Patte
Bonjour,
I had some problem with vlc after an upgrade to f28.
For *one* user vlc crashed on startup with these messages:
libva info: VA-API version 1.1.0
libva info: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib64/dri/i965_drv_video.so

then crash!
This did not occur for other users. So I deleted all vlc config and
cache files, but the problem remained.
I installed libva-intel-driver package and the problem disappeared.
I am wondering why this package was missing for only one user....
Some ideas?
Thank you.

Banshee music player fake tagging
by Tony Nelson
The Banshee music player banshee-2.6.2-30.fc28.x86_64 has numerous
problems beyond becoming unresponsive at startup 2 out of 3 attempts.
It often (I think not always) only pretends to set the id3 tags in a
music file. It remembers the tags somewhere itself, but when the
file is downloaded to a player, there is no tag in the file. I have
verified this with id3info and id3v2.
I'd file a bug, but there seems no point in filing a bug against a
Gnome project in Fedora's bugzilla, and Banshee doesn't seem to be
using bugzilla.gnome.org but some new thing (which might be why all
the bugs seem old) and I can't be bothered to open yet another account
just because Gnome runs things badly. It's not as if anyone actually
care's about Banshee, or it would start up properly. If you care,
make a new account and report the bugs; I'm just informing Fedora
users.
Don't use Banshee. I certainly won't anymore, after wasting hours
on it lying about setting the tags.

dnf upgrade issues (F28)
by Jarmo Hurri
Greetings.
Typically any issues I have had running dnf upgrade have been solved
behind the scenes pretty quickly. Now I have had two persistent issues
for a while in F28 (clean install). Output of "dnf upgrade" is currently

I do understand that there are probably command line options that would
fix the situation for me, at least temporarily. But I would not like to
resort to them, and I also think it would be a sign of quality / favour
for future users of F28 if these issues were fixed at their source. Any
ideas about how I should proceed?
