Strange behavior with MATE desktop
by Paolo Galtieri
Folks,
yesterday afternoon I started having some strange things occurring on
my F27 system with MATE desktop. First issue is that when I tried to
logout it didn't, even though it prompted for logout. What's
interesting is that the "System" pulldown menu was missing the
"Shutdown" option and the confirmation dialog only had 2 buttons,
"Logout" and "Cancel". What happened after I clicked logout is that my
session restarted all the apps I had running restarted, but now I had 2
volume control applets and 2 NetworkManager applets in the top panel. I
tried again, this time though the "Shutdown" option re-appeared in the
"System" pull down menu. However, my session restarted and now there
were 3 volume control applets and 3 NetworkManager applets in the top
panel. I tried again, and again my session restarted with now 4 volume
control applets and 4 NetworkManager applets. In each case so far there
were only 2 buttons on the logout confirmation dialog. I tried again,
but this time the logout confirmation dialog had 3 buttons, I clicked on
logout and this time it finally did log me out.
The second issue is that now whenever I plug in an external USB drive I
get a popup saying I'm not authorized to perform the operation. This
last issue is really annoying since it has always worked. I haven't
changed anything so I have no idea what suddenly caused these problems
to occur.
What's interesting about this last issue is that sometimes it does mount
the drive when I login, however, if I unmount it, unplug it and plug it
back in I get the "Not authorized to perform operation" message.
These 2 problems only occur on one of my 2 F27 systems running MATE.
Anyone know what might have changed and how do I fix it?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Paolo

pychess F27/F28
by Joerg Lechner
Hi,
sometimes I have the feeling that Pychess has a remember function of the last chess plays. Calculates Pychess only according to the programmed examples of the "chess plays of the "chess masters"" and according to the chess rules, or remembers Pychess also i.e. my last games?
Kind regards

sound from virtual machine gone?
by Tom Horsley
I have just noticed that my Windows 10 virtual machine
no longer sends sound out to the host where I can
hear things.
Unfortunately I got the annoying Windows 10 April update
and about the same time I switched to Fedora 28, so I
have no idea when sound might have vanished or which
changes might be at fault.
Anyone done all these updates and had sound keep working
(or vanish). Is there some service I need to be running
on fedora 28 to support sound I may have turned off
by accident? (Or maybe the Windows 10 update killed off
something inside the virtual machine that needs to be
running).
I suppose I ought to download updated Windows virtio
drivers for everything since newer versions might be
available (but it always takes forever to find them
as someone keeps moving them to make them easier to find
about every six months :-).

after F27->F28 upgrade, hangs at end of boot
by Dave Mitchell
I recently upgraded an 11 year old laptop from F27 to F28. (This machine has
previously worked fine with many releases from FC6 onwards.)
The upgrade went apparently smoothly.
But now near the end of the boot sequence (filling-up teardrop turning
into a fedora logo), the cursor appears in the middle of the screen, but
doesn't move with either mouse or touchpad input. After a few more minutes
the fedora teardrop vanishes, leaving a blank screen with a frozen
cursor.
Alt-Ctl_F1..7 do nothing.
I can ssh in. journalctl shows (amongst lots of other stuff):
May 13 21:36:07 pigeon systemd[1]: Reached target Network is Online.
May 13 21:41:09 pigeon systemd[1]: Reached target Multi-User System.
May 13 21:41:09 pigeon systemd[1]: Reached target Graphical Interface.
There's nothing in the journal that leaps out at me as an error.
Any idea how to debug this?
(I upgraded a week ago; today I did a dnf update, but the problem persists).

After system-upgrade F26->F27, system startup hangs after Reached
target System Initialization
by Frédéric
Hi,
I just ran the dnf system-upgrade procedure on my 3rd system and
everthing seemed to work fine up to the installation of all packages
and reboot. The reboot stopped after "Reached target System
Initialization" (see below what is on the screen). I cannot log in via
ssh. Ctrl+Alt+FN does not work.
Note that I am used to the FAILED message about Load Kernel Modules. I
do not know what it means but it normally does not prevent me from
working.
What should I do? Just try to reboot another time?

Unable to lower cpu frequency

current CPU frequency is 2.80 GHz (asserted by call to hardware).
Cpu can accept frquencies as low as 800MHz.
So, does anyone have a more magical incantation to force the 2 cores
to run at 2.0 GHz?

Compile issues after F27 -> F28 upgrade
by alan@clueserver.org
I did an upgrade from Fedora 27 to the Fedora 28 beta a while back. (About
a week before final release.) After the update I tried to recompile a
program I use often. The program would compile after a bit of patching,
but it would not start.
Using ldd I was able to determine that the ldconfig database still had old
entries from the Fedora 27 install that had been upgraded/erased.
Is this a known issue or am I just going mad?
