CUPS - Some apps can't print
by Philip Rhoades
People,
I try and minimise printing and try and send electronic docs where
possible but sometimes I am forced into producing paper copies. Because
I use the printer so infrequently, I am not sure if this problem has
started since upgrading from F25 to F26 (x86_64) or whether it was there
even earlier (I usually update every version). CUPS printer info:
Device URI:
lpd://192.168.1.4/
Make and Model:
Brother HL-5250DN BR-Script3
Trying to print from LibreOffice - no data is sent and the Printer State
shows:
Idle - Filter failed
Printing the exported PDF with qpdfview works fine and the Printer State
shows:
Idle - Data file sent successfully.
So for every doc I end up having to export to PDF from LibreOffice and
print from qpdfview . . which is tedious when the thing should be able
to be printed directly. I have spent hours trying all the options (I
thought it might be because I have an imbedded PNG for a signature) and
Googling but haven't found a solution. I have deleted the printer
driver and reinstalled it a number of times . .
I just found trying to print from Google Docs to the printer fails too .
.
Any suggestions about further debugging?
Thanks,
Phil.

To answer my own question - this fixed the problem:
dnf update cups-filters
systemctl restart cups

editing write-protected document in LibreOffice
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I have been trying to edit a .docx document in LibreOffice that says that it is write-protected. Nothing I have tried (eg: enable Form Design on View, or Format -> Sections "Editable in Read-only document" seems to work. I get a pop-up that says:
"Write-protected content cannot be changed. No modifications will be accepted".
Are there ways to remedy this?
Many thanks,
Ranjan

Why is ALPM enabled in fedora 27 by update? (was SATA errors (only)
when on battery)
by Clemens Eisserer
Hi again,

The more I analyze this issue, the more I think it is caused by ALPM
(agressive link power management).
When I switched in BIOS the SATA mode from AHCI -> IDE everthing
worked like before, so does the laptop when I am connected to wall
power.
However I wonder, did ALPM enablement accidently slip into stable
Fedora-27 updates?
I thought ALPM was targeted for Fedora-28:

Fedora27: Cannot set the default network route
by Terry Barnaby
A strange one this. I was trying to change the default route of a
machine for testing a different gateway.
I ran:
route del default gw <gateway1>
route add default gw <gateway2>
However the second command did not add the route and I could not add the
old default route back. There were no errors on stdout or in
/var/log/messages.
Now I found that if there is already a default route you can add another
one, so could do a:
route add default gw <gateway2>
route del default gw <gateway2>
And these worked fine. It seems you cannot set a default route if there
isn't one set.
Any ideas ?

Unusual CPU heat when charging on a hybrid laptop
by PMH
Hello,
I noticed this problem after kernel update of 4.14.14. Before the update CPU temp
would stay somewhere in 38-48 degrees zone. Since the update however, only
when laptop's battery is charging(and I'm using it at the same time) CPU
temp gets as high as 60-70 degrees and it eventually causes a crash which
forces me to restart.
NOTE: I'm not saying this issue is related to the kernel update I'm just
saying I noticed it after the update only.
My machine: Asus UX301ne laptop
CPU: intel Corei7 6500 skylake 2.5GHz
Graphics: Intel HD graphics + Nvidia GTX 950m
How I tried to solve the problem:
Firstly I noticed that when plugged in and charging, Opening up the
gnome-settings and clicking on "Details" causes a crash that forces me to
restart. I don't know how I can find any info on why that happens.
Secondly I think this is somehow related to my hybrid cards and the
open-source driver of NVIDIA. Also possibly PRIME. I do not know how I can
check this unfortunately. In addition, this question seems to address the
same problem of mine.
https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/question/111016/laptop-gets-hot-while-ch...
However none of the solutions provided at the page helped me.
Also Fans Work fine. They go 5400rpm when I plug the charger in.
I should say that I don't need the NVIDIA graphics at all! Intel would
do... So if there is a way to disable NVIDIA and get rid of this problem It
would be allright. Also if possible I would like to avoid non-free drivers.
Any help and/or clue would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time.
And one word of advice: Don't buy Hybrid Graphic devices...
they're waste of time and money :(

Internet camera connection -
by Bob Goodwin
I bought twoptz cameras which can be viewed and controlled with the
family iPhonesand of course they would like to use the "Armcrest"
cloud/server in order to view them while away during the day. The
cameras would connect to my LAN and via my router to the Viasat modem. I
have always tried to avoid such connections to my system and doing this
is worrisome.
Thoughts and advice appreciated,
Bob

Fail2ban
by Jeffrey Ross
Fedora 27 system
Trying to get Fail2ban to work properly on the system and I'm looking
for a good example to follow for the firewall portion.
Some of the challenges I've had is when shutting down the system it can
take a very very long time to "unban" all the banned addresses and it
can take equally as long to reban ip addresses on start-up.
Does somebody have a good example of their firewall jail configuration
they can share?
Thanks, Jeff

Problem browsing at some hotspots
by JD
Hi all,
some hotspots are censoring many websites which they find offensive or
objectionable,
including websites that discuss evolution and the possible changes that
can occur
due to the current weakening of Earth's magnetic field, and the
expanding south atlantic
hole in the magnetic field... This is just one example.
So, I would like to know if there are members on this list who know how
to get around
such blocking by these hotspots? Are there FF add-ons that can do it?
Thanx!!
