Dell Latitude E7470 Install: Selected boot device failed
by Michael B Allen
I'm trying to boot the latest Fedora Live iso on a brand new Dell and
I'm getting:
Selected boot device failed
What is the trick to getting this to boot?
I just dd'd the iso on the USB drive. Do I need to make it bootable or
some such?
I updated the BIOS to the latest. I verfied everything works as it
should under Windows. I tried playing with the BIOS settings but stuff
is mostly disabled already. I tried booting in both Legacy and UEFI
modes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm nursing a 5 year old
Toshiba with CentOS 6 and it's time to upgrade. I've been using Linux
as my primary machine since late 90's but it has been so long since I
last installed on a newish laptop I have no idea what the issues are
anymore.
Help!

issue with pycam
by Howard Howell
Hi, everyone,
I use Pycam with my milling machine. The process I follow is:
design with OpenSCAD, export as DXF or STL format.
Open with PYCAM and adjust settings for feedrate, speed, bit
size and so forth as required for the project and material. Load the
DXF or STL file and run one of the tool paths.
This has worked for years with no issues. Today, though, Pycam
fails. No errors when the window closes suddenly withour finishing the
job. So I started Pycam from the terminal windows and here are the
error messages:
Psyco is not available (performance will probably suffer slightly)

Forward and Backward Steppers missing in Thunderbird and Possibly
Firefox
by Stephen Morris
Hi,
I'm using Thunderbird 52.0a1 and I have an issue with the forward
and backward steppers (top and bottom arrows on scrollbars) missing. In
another thread Tom Horsley provided a gtk-3 css script that needed to be
placed in ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css. This script rectified the missing
arrows issue when I was using KDE, but now that I am trying Gnome this
script does not appear to work, what needs to be done to get the script
to work under Gnome?

F23: KDE menu launch SSH inside konsole fails after update
by Gary Stainburn
I don't know when it stopped working working, but it was recently.
Unfortunately, with almost daily updates I don't know what's caused it.
I have menu entried within my KDE which start a ssh command inside a konsole.
This has worked fine for as long as I can remember (F9 or before)
However, now when I try, I get the launch feedback, the konsole window never
opens.
If I open a konsole session, e.g. by right clicking the desktop, and then run
the ssh command then all works fine.
Can annyone suggest how I can debug/fix the problem?

Alt tab with 2+ monitors
by Cássio Pereira
So, Ubuntu handles alt+tab correctly when you have more than one monitor.
It displays the app switcher on the window you're currently active on.
Fedora always displays the app switcher on the primary monitor.
Any way to display it on all monitors or, ideally, only on the one you're
currently working on?
I'm using Fedora 24 with Gnome 3.
Thanks,
Cássio

Steve,
The GTK+ drop down is the theme for all of your window decorations
and whatnot. Then if you want to change your GNOME Shell theme, you need
to enable to User Shell Theme extension. That extension should be there
by default in Fedora 23 and 24 if I remember correctly. This will allow
you to change the overall theme of top bar, for example opening the drop
down calendar up top and colour of the panel. If you want to change just
the colour of the panel, I used to use an extension to do that but I
cannot find it anymore. You'll have to dig up the .css file or create
one if it doesn't already exist. Alternatively you can find an extension
that changes it (mine changes it to a dark grey, for example).
There is no way that I know of to preview extensions or themes. I
just go off screenshots or download them and try them out, there isn't
really any harm in doing so. You will need to google/duck/etc some
themes, gnome-look.org has some you can take a peek at.
Thanks,
Bryon

umask setting for apache on fedora23/24
by Alex
Hi,
I'm setting up a joomla website on fedora23. The problem I'm having is
with providing the level of write access that apache needs while also
allowing the joomla user write to the same directories.
The current umask is 0022 for each user. I'd like to change it to
0002, so both can write to the same directory.
I've set sgid on the directories, but I don't believe that to be a
very good solution, and it also doesn't set the write bit without the
umask being set.
I believe that I can add them both to the same group and set the umask
to fix the problem.
I've tried editing the systemd config files, as per these instructions:
http://serverfault.com/questions/582371/how-to-set-umask-for-php-fpm-in-f...
then su'd to the apache user (after giving it a shell), and the umask
doesn't change. What effect does /etc/profile and /etc/bashrc have on
umask, after the systemd settings were changed?
I've temporarily disabled those umask settings in the local files, and
it doesn't appear to change.
Thanks,
Alex
