Regex broken??
by Stephen Davies
I have just noticed that regex seems to be broken in my Fedora 20 (just
updated to latest).
Any regex search in vi, gawk, grep -E etc fails.
Any ideas?
Cheers,

Hi,
I've got an old Garmin for the car & an eTrex for in my pocket, I update
them both from Open Street Maps. The devvices come up without problem &
the chosen maps are just copied to the SD card.

Which is, of course, the primary thing that is wrong with it :-).
Unix/linux grew successfully for years by dividing things into small independent pieces and making them work on one thing well.
Systemd is now engulfing practically all of linux. A bug in one piece can make dozens of other things fail, and it is so large and complex that there *will* be bugs in pieces of it.
When there were separate bits, you could simply turn off the bits you had no need for.
A monolithic systemd can't be turned off or even down. In fact it has been instructive to watch the memory indicator in my gkrellm monitor on my not very big system at work.
It has been steadily moving up every fedora release.

I agree that separating things into small independent parts is truly a good move.
But major success factor of OpenSource software in general (not just Linux), was that you had the freedom to choose between several options.
I don't mind that some developpers spent their precious time on system, it is _their_ choice.
However, many people (not just Fedora-users/integrators, exact same feelings can be found on ML of other repo's) resent that any alternative is taken away.

Shouldn't "yum provides '*/acpidump'" have turned up acpica-tools?

Yes! And how it *works* is not what that term, used normally describes.
Which is the point being made.
'Disabled' should imply 'NEVER'
'Masked' is not a word which should be used in this context.
Selinux got the terms correct, IMHO there is NO reason why systemd
should not use the same terms:
ENABLED means ALWAYS
PERMISSIVE means SOMETIMES
DISABLED means NEVER
These are the start-up default states and should have no effect on using
start or stop directly. Systemd however mis-manages this as well, so
that you cannot start a 'masked' service
So 'masked' is actually NEVER NOT EVEN WHEN YOU WANT IT. and DISABLED
means SOMETIMES, but there is no way to set a state where the computer
cannot under any circumstances but you can MANUALLY.*
This thread contains numerous instances of why systemd is not well
architected, although what it does do, it seems to do well. What it
tries to do seems to be a 'reach which exceeds its grasp'. And to boot,
the documentation, although extensive is far too abstract and
blatherfull to be actually useful.
Geoff
*I mean that I should not have to 'unmask', 'start' and 'mask' the
service to achieve an 'only-when-*I*-want-it' start-up of a service.
Setting 'disabled' means that the system can start it whenever it feels
the need.

more info on hundreds of dbus-daemons
by Rick Walker
Hi all,
I'm still working on my problem with hundreds of zombie dbus-daemons. I
guess it isn't that common of an issue.
After some investigation, I have found that the main culprit seems to be
konsole(1). I mostly use my system in command-line mode and am
constantly creating and killing konsoles for various jobs.
For some reason, creating a konsole forks a dbus-daemon (like this
output from ps -ef):
walker 12859 1 0 Jul08 ? 00:00:00
/bin/dbus-daemon --fork --print-pid 5 --print-address 7 --session
When the konsole terminal is killed, the daemon never goes away. My
system performance gradually goes downhill and eventually I get a "no
more system file descriptor" error as the number of daemons pile up.
Any suggestions for how to debug or fix this? Killing the dbus-daemons
locks the window system. Should I take off the fork option in the dbus
config file? Is there some way I can start konsoles so that
they do a better job of reaping dbus-daemons?
kind regards

What is an "ll header"?
by lee
Hi,
what is an "ll header"?
I'm trying to figure out why I have martian sources and got so far as to
think that they are not created on my side. Yet the "ll header" might
contain some useful information if I knew exactly how to interpret that
information.

Code of Conduct warning on "why do we use systemd" thread
by Matthew Miller
Please review https://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct (also linked in the
signature of every message on this list).
I think there may be some constructive messages in that thread, but there's
also a lot of trolling and quite a bit of back and forth rehashing the same
thing. This does not contribute to a good atmosphere on the mailing list.
Please think extra-hard about whether your post contributes in a positive way
before continuing the discussion.
Thank you.

[OT] virtual exam environment
by Pal, Laszlo
Hi,
I'm going to create some virtual exam environment and maybe
kvm/qemu/virsh can do the job.
This environment should consists several virtual machines (linux +
windows) and several virtual networks. This is not a big deal. But
after the baseline is created, I would like to simulate problems which
must be solved by the examinees.
My idea is to use snapshots for this, so I can create faulty snapshots
and assign them to in a combination with some good snapshots creating
'scenarios'.
Do you think it can be a working approach? Is there any better
'tool'/environment for this? Is there any guide for such thing?
Thanks
