XFCE is working very badly
by Paul Smith
Dear All,
XFCE is working very badly, with the mouse clicking autonomously
without the user command.
Initially, I suspected that such a misbehaviour was caused by
Mathematica 10, but without Mathematica running since the beginning of
the XFCE session, the problem occurs.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Paul

RE: Permanently mount a USB Hard Disk for Security purpose
by J.Witvliet@mindef.nl
Hi Angelo,
Before embarking on such exercise, what are your objectives?
Permanently mounting an USB-hard-drive could be useful, but is does have its drawbacks
I would only suggest it if the main drives (internally) have a problem with capacity or so, and even then only as a temporary stop-gap.
From performance point of view, USB-drives can be a major PITA, impacting overall system performance.
And with regards to “Security purpose” ($subject) it is pointless:
In case of fire, water, power-spikes, theft… (you name it) both your system AND the USB-drive will be lost.
And also, the HDD inside a usb-drive are seldom intended for 24/7 usage; neither the PSU that comes along (personal experience)
I’ve seen commercial desktops lasting much longer than USB-drives.
I would suggest to look at a NAS-box or turning some simple machines into CEPH-data-nodes, with all the usual precautions
(other room/building, different locks, other power-source, UPS, ect etc)
If you are serious about “Security”, try to avoid to allude yourself with false feelings.
USB-drives are very handy devices, but for a limited scope: for a quick backup/restore, test-installation or data migration

Subject: Permanently mount a USB Hard Disk for Security purpose
Hi,
for the first time I have to solve this kind of problem, that's way I would like to ask for some advice how to make correctly the installation of a "permanent" USB hard drive to use for saving data ...
The HD in question should have two partitions:
· the first one to be used to synchronize immediately (rsync) important data for backup purposes
· the second one to use, always backup purposes, to make scheduled backups of other type of data.
I think a USB HD should be suitable for this need (backup) for being able easily to remove and immediatly use, the stored data, on another computers.
I think I should first create -on the USB Hard Disk (that I could to use Gparted for this purpose)- two partitions of type MSDOS and then I should format these partitions in FAT32 format:
this is because 'the MSDOS type of partition and format FAT32 should ensure the possibility' of using the data both on Linux and on Windows systems.
Secondly, the HD should be mounted on the computer ... permanently.
Mkdir /media/resqueHD
mount -t fat32 /dev/sdd1 /media/resqueHD
and finally, the mounting should be made permanent by adding the line:
/dev/sdd1
/media/mydata ext4 defaults 0 0
to file /etc/fstab
finally
rsync -av dataToCheck /media/resqueHD/directory
Is this correct... and if it is also convenient to do ?
Thank you
Regards
Angelo

by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I have been getting this message when I start pxmixer:
(pnmixer:3435): Gdk-CRITICAL **: IA__gdk_window_get_root_coords: assertion 'GDK_IS_WINDOW (window)' failed
What is missing? How do I get around it? I am on a fully updated Fedora 20.
Many thanks,
Ranjan

Disable automatic download of updates
by John Tall
Hello.
After installing the Fedora 21 Alpha with GNOME I've found that the system
now downloads updates automatically and notifies me when they are ready to
be installed. This is a very handy feature, but from what I can tell it
looks like the packages are downloaded automatically in the background. I'm
often on a mobile hotspot and don't have the capacity to download sometimes
hundreds of megabytes of packages. How do I disable the automatic download
in Fedora 21?

Yum update accident -
by Bob Goodwin
I just ran yum update on this F-20 computer and I tried copying some
warnings produced using the usual CTRL-c, my excuse is I just got out of
bed and my dog is nagging me to go out. :-(
I restarted yum with "yum update" and the result is:
....... snip ......
---> Package xfce4-weather-plugin.x86_64 0:0.8.3-7.fc20 will be an update
--> Finished Dependency Resolution
--> Running transaction check
---> Package kernel-devel.x86_64 0:3.16.2-201.fc20 will be erased
--> Finished Dependency Resolution
Error: Multilib version problems found. This often means that the root
cause is something else and multilib version checking is just
pointing out that there is a problem. Eg.:
1. You have an upgrade for nss-softokn-freebl which is missing
some
dependency that another package requires. Yum is trying to
solve this by installing an older version of
nss-softokn-freebl of the
different architecture. If you exclude the bad architecture
yum will tell you what the root cause is (which package
requires what). You can try redoing the upgrade with
--exclude nss-softokn-freebl.otherarch ... this should give
you an error
message showing the root cause of the problem.
2. You have multiple architectures of nss-softokn-freebl
installed, but
yum can only see an upgrade for one of those architectures.
If you don't want/need both architectures anymore then you
can remove the one with the missing update and everything
will work.
3. You have duplicate versions of nss-softokn-freebl installed
already.
You can use "yum check" to get yum show these errors.
...you can also use --setopt=protected_multilib=false to remove
this checking, however this is almost never the correct thing to
do as something else is very likely to go wrong (often causing
much more problems).
Protected multilib versions:
nss-softokn-freebl-3.17.2-1.fc20.i686 !=
nss-softokn-freebl-3.17.1-2.fc20.x86_64
What should I do to recover?

[Fwd: curl: (35) Cannot communicate securely with peer:]
by Aaron Siegel
Hello
I am stumped. I am trying to us the kraxel qemu repository, it appears
the repository moved to secure server since then I have not been able to
configure this properly. https://www.kraxel.org/repos/jenkins/
I receive the following error when I try to use the repository
curl: (35) Cannot communicate securely with peer: no common encryption
algorithm(s).
I receive the same error with centos 7 minimal installation and fedora
20. What am I doing wrong, I have recently switch to the Fedora
platform, I have not read all the manuals but trying.
I have imported the gpg keys that Kraxel has posted on his blog using
rpm --import. I can only download file through my web browser. I was
going to clone his git repository and set up a local repository, bit git
report the same error. Which leads me to believe the problem is with my
certificates.
I have even tried the firefox-db2pem.sh, I am not sure it did anything.
Does curl need to be recompiled with nss support? Is there a package I
need to compile? nss 3.17.2 is installed, non of the man page work.
Looking deeper into the nss,
# certutil -L
certutil: function failed: SEC_ERROR_LEGACY_DATABASE: The
certificate/key database is in an old, unsupported format.
I think there is something wrong with my nss certificates, but I have
run out of time. Any suggestions.
This is on a brand new installation Fedora 20 and Centos 7, I have not
had time to break anything.
The openssl command connect with the server, is
$ openssl s_client -connect www.kraxel.org:443
The curl output is posted below in fedora system the output for the
centos is the same with the exception of the curl and nss versions:
