What new security "feature" is screwing me up now?
by Tom Horsley
On fedora 19, the UDEV scripts I have described here work perfectly:
http://home.comcast.net/~tomhorsley/hardware/solidoodle/solidoodle-udev.html
On fedora 20, my user script that sets DISPLAY and
starts /usr/bin/RepetierHost doesn't start RepetierHost,
but other side effects of that script do happen.
If I cut & paste the command, it works fine, so why
won't it start from the script in fedora 20?
I changed the script to log stdout and stderr to a file,
and there is no error, it just doesn't start the program :-(.
It is almost like nohup isn't preventing hup and it
is dying in the sleep command before it starts RH.

Fedup: upgrade cannot start...
by Georgios Petasis
Hi all,
I am trying to upgrade my FC19 system to FC20.
So, I installed fedup (it was installed, and updated to the latest
0.8.0-3.fc19 anyway).
I ran |fedup --network 20, which completed without errors. I reported
that a few packages will not be updated (adobe acrobat, elastic search,
etc).
Then, I rebooted the pc, by selecting the upgrade option in grub.
After that, nothing happens, I am simply getting a FC19 system, running
with the upgrade kernel.
uname -a reports fc20, but there is not a single fc20 package installed.
Installation does not even start.
I tried this 3 times, exactly the same behaviour. I tried to see if
anything is reported in the logs,
but I couldn't find anything.
Any idea on what may be wrong, or where should I look for the error?

Printing CD/DVD case cover inserts
by John Aldrich
I recently had a failed upgrade so I had to reinstall. Previously, under
Fedora I had some sort of CD/DVD case cover insert printer that would print
all sorts of nice covers. Since reinstalling, I no longer have that. Anyone
know what it would be?
I use the slimline DVD cases, so would prefer something that can print those
instead of / along with the regular DVD case inserts.

Where does anacron config sendmail?
by Robert Moskowitz
Still working on cron without sendmail. I am learning some as I peel
the onion. The latest error message is:
Jan 19 16:21:23 lx120e.htt-consult.com run-parts[22838]:

Jan 19 16:21:23 lx120e.htt-consult.com anacron[10446]: Job `cron.daily'

Jan 19 16:21:23 lx120e.htt-consult.com anacron[10446]: Can't find
sendmail at /usr/sbin/sendmail, not mailing output
I can't find where anacron specifies sendmail.
cat /etc/logwatch/conf/logwatch.conf
# Local configuration options go here (defaults are in
/usr/share/logwatch/default.conf/logwatch.conf)
mailer = "/usr/bin/mailx -s Logwatch"
and
cat /etc/sysconfig/crond
# Settings for the CRON daemon.

CRONDARGS=-m "/usr/bin/mailx -t"
Note that in this file the quoted mailx for -m. Without the quotes, the
-t was used as a crond parameter, which is an error.

Re: RPM scriptlets failing during updates

Hi Rahul,

The entry ends with this note:
... and use yum history redo <transaction number> to reinstall the
packages.
This is inaccurate. The above prescription works only for packages
where the scriptlet errors led to an installation failure. If however
the package was installed, but scriptlets failed, then those packages
are skipped. For such a case the specific package has to be reinstalled
by hand.
I believe it is this way since the original command was install, so
install is repeated[1], not reinstall.
Hope this helps,
Footnotes:
[1] Which is a noop as the package is already installed.

Probably be rebuilding a box,
What would be a large enough partition for /tmp
on it own hD/partition.
80gb is the smallest sata I have.
luks required on /tmp?

going to be set after 1st login.
Any gotchas anyone.
I don't really want to chuck the box,

Finding neighbours on my LAN
by Suvayu Ali
Hi,
I'm trying to find all my computers on my home network (ip addresses are
assigned using DHCP, can't change that). So far these are my attempts:
$ ip neigh | grep REACHABLE | grep <mac_address>
But this seems rather unrealiable. Often the reported addresses are not
up to date (e.g. offline devices still show up, or newly connected
devices are missing). I also tried nmap with the DHCP ip range:
$ nmap -sn 192.168.1.65-150
But that is too intensive (I intend to run this from a script in a cron
job from time to time); also I do not know how to get the mac_address so
that I can identify which device it is.
Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance,
