synaptics gone?
by Andras Simon
On an up-to-date F-17 synclient complains:
"Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver loaded?"
And indeed, there's no sign of the synaptics driver being loaded in Xorg.log.
Is there anything I could check or change?

how to change character menu font in ibus?
by William Mattison
(Fedora-18)
Using ibus's settings GUI, I configured ibus to use a size 16 kai font to display a list of simplified Chinese characters that match the pinyin that the user types to enter a simplified Chinese character. But when I try to enter Chinese characters (in vi in a Gnome terminal), the menu of characters is displayed in a smaller ming(?) font. It is the same in LibreOffice Writer. My configuration settings seems to be ignored. Chinese characters, even simplified Chinese characters, can have over 20 strokes (compare 'W' and 'M' have only 4 strokes each). The smaller size and ming(?) font is harder to read. How do I get ibus to use the kai font and bigger size in its character menus?
thanks,
Bill.

[F18][ATI Rage XL] Problems with install on ATI Rage XP video driver
by Aaron Gray
I am getting 1/4 of a screens worth of the Anaconda and runtime display on
F18. It worked alright on F14 and F16. It seems to be to do with the HP DL
140 G3's ATI Rage XL video controller.
The main install option gives garbage graphics and the basic graphics
install option give 1/4 or less of the display on the screen.
I have tried with multiple monitors but get the same results.
Has X.org depreciated the ATI Rage XL video driver ?
Are there any options on startup and on GRUB that may help me ?
There seems to be a similar problem on Ubuntu, here's a solution :-

unshare strange behavoius
by David Shwatrz
hello,
I created a mount namespace thus:
I run:
unshare -m /bin/bash
and then
mount -t tmpfs tmpfs /test
cat /proc/mounts |grep test
shows this:
tmpfs /test tmpfs rw,relatime 0 0
from a second terminal I run:
cat /proc/mounts | grep test
tmpfs /test tmpfs rw,relatime 0 0
Now, the unshare -m /bin/bash should have created a private mount
namespace ; why do I see the mount I performed on another
terminal, which runs the default mount namespace ? according
to what I know, changes in the new namespace I created should not
propagate to other namespace (unless we explicitly use the share
flag with mount)

Keyboard LED applet
by Ian Pilcher
Just when you think that laptop manufacturers couldn't go any farther
off the rails, Lenovo has apparently decided that physical keyboard
status LEDs are just too darn expensive.
Does anyone know of a keyboard LED applet/widget that can be used with
KDE? (An actual Plasma widget is obviously preferred, but I'll take
anything that can run in the system tray.)
Thanks!

Unable to login - Cannot open font file true, previous help not working
by Alexandre Fernandes
I'm new on linux (Fedora) and today while trying to install google earth
and MySQL http://www.linuxlinks.com/article/20071021085924955/MySQL.html,
after re-start the computer I got the message: cannot open font file true.
I found some help such as "edit your /etc/default/grub file, and on the lie
with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX there is a parameter that says SYSFONT=True". All
help I found online did not work because I can't login in Fedora and
therefore can't access the terminal. The only thing I'm able to use command
line is GRUB that does not accept any of the usual commands.
If it is not possible to solve this bug, is it there a way to do a back up
of my files to an external HD from GRUB?
thanks for any help! I'm bit desperate because I have quite important data.
Best regards
Alex

Error mounting Solaris disk (UFS)
by Fernando Cassia
After discovering an ancient 40GB hard drive in a drawer under of a
pile of ancient papers (!), I decided to take a peek on it to see if
there's any data worth keeping, before formatting.
Discovering the file system gives me "Unix Fast File System"
# file -sL /dev/sde12
/dev/sde12: Unix Fast File system [v1] (little-endian), last mounted
on /export/home, last written at Fri Sep 26 01:46:07 2003, clean flag
2, number of blocks 37882656, number of data blocks 37287436, number
of cylinder groups 767, block size 8192, fragment size 1024, minimum
percentage of free blocks 1, rotational delay 0ms, disk rotational
speed 60rps, TIME optimization
However, when I try to mount it, I get errors...
# mount -t ufs -o ufstype=ufs,ro /dev/sde12 /mnt/disk39
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sde12,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
Changing ufstype to ufs2 gives me the same error.
Any ideas? This disk was installed on a system that ran Solaris 7 x86
at the time, I guess that was before ZFS...

where is volume control thermometer
by Mike Wright
Hi all,
Running f18 installed from the xfce live spin.
Keyboard volume controls used to pop a small window center screen that
showed the current volume.
It provides instant feedback without having to leave the keyboard and
updates in real time as the volume is adjusted. IMO that is a very
simple and elegant way of communicating with the user
Is it still available? If so, what is its package name?
