fedora 18 and lsi latest kernels don't boot
by Gianluca Cecchi
Hello,
default 3.6.10-4.fc18.x86_64 f18 install kernel is ok.
Instead both
kernel-3.8.4-202.fc18
and
3.7.9-205.fc18
stop at boot with error and systemd emergency shell and journalctl
shows like in this picture:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwoPbcrMv8mvd0Z0bExhTDYxQjQ/edit?usp=sharing
any hint?
I suspect raid controller:
The same thing happens on two intel blades after I install f18 and run
a yum update.

driver for a printer connected to a remote computer
by antonio montagnani
A printer connected to a computer on my network is easily discovered but
driver is generally a Raw generic driver: therefore I cannot use part of
options (i.e. printing multiple pages on a single sheet and so on).
If I want to have full functionality I have to install driver by hand
using system-config-printer.
(I am using a Samsung ML-1610 laser printer)
Is this behaviour normal??

Fedora 18 "software": "check for update" hangs
by D. Hugh Redelmeier
When I selected "Software" and within that chose the menu item to check
for updates, the process worked for a while and then apparently made no
more progress but ate 100% of the CPU.
It is kind of scary interrupting an update, but after about half an hour
of no progress, I decided that there was no other way.
Do this in a superuser shell instead. It works and gives better feedback:
yum update
See <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=922697>
PS. I consider software: check for updates less convenient than the
pre-F18 "sofware updates".

Read AIFF metadata
by Ranbir
Hi Everyone,
I bought some AIFF tracks from Beatport the other day. I prefer them
over WAV because the AIFF have embedded album art, song name, etc.
I loaded them up in Audacious (F17+GNOME) which played them happily.
But, it's not reading any of the metadata. All of the fields are
displayed as empty. I tried VLC and mplayer, too. Still nothing.
I downloaded the same tracks on to a Windows 7 PC and listened to them
with VLC. VLC read the metadata without any problems. Hmmm....
I then installed Kid3 to see if it could read the metadata. Sure
enough, it was all there. So, the tracks are clearly not broken.
I tried converting the AIFFs to FLAC with ffmpeg and flac, but the
metadata was still missing.
I'd appreciate a recommendation for an audio player that can read AIFF
metadata in GNOME or better yet, how I can convert these AIFFs to FLAC
and keep the metadata intact.
Regards,
Ranbir

Logging in to CUPS web UI
by Ian Pilcher
In prior releases, I was able to log in to the CUPS web UI using the OS
root credentials. This doesn't work in Fedora 18.
How can I log into the CUPS web UI in Fedora 18?
Thanks!

Window edges
by Beartooth
My PCs fall into two classes. One has windows whose every edge
and corner I can grab right onto with the greatest of ease, when I want
to move one or change its size. The others make these jobs almost
impossible, at least for those with trifocal fingers and arthritic
eyeballs.
Somewhere I picked up an implication that the difference is in an
actual setting -- and I can control it. HOW??

Limiting .bash_history inputs
by Roger
I am using Fedora 18.
A long time ago someone asked for a way to stop repeat commands like
clear, ls -aFl, and others from going into .bash_history.
Can someone please tell me what the command was.
Thanks Roger

Re: yum upgrade
by EGO-II.1
I wonder if they'll ever automate the upgrade process?.... to make it easier to go from one version to the next?.... seems like it would help make the process smoother for newbies....

there is no simplistic way for
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Upgrading_Fedora_using_yum
if you do not understand this steps you need to read manuals
or avoid a dist-upgrade with yum at all
