dhclient: preventing hostname disclosure via DHCP request (option 12)
by fedorauser
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA512
Hi,
I'd like to avoid sending my hostname to the DHCP server via the DHCP
request (Option 12).
On my F19 system dhclient runs with the following parameters:
/sbin/dhclient -d -sf /usr/libexec/nm-dhcp-client.action -pf
/var/run/dhclient-em1.pid -lf
/var/lib/NetworkManager/dhclient-e4e10ab3-a727-4cae-9b6e-40b565ad3e3f-em1.lease
- -cf /var/lib/NetworkManager/dhclient-em1.conf em1
/var/lib/NetworkManager/dhclient-em1.conf
contains the relevant line:
send host-name "foobar"; # added by NetworkManager
but modifying this file has no effect since it will be regenerated by
NetworkManager.
What is the right way to remove the "send host-name" line from
dhclient's config file?
thanks!
fedorauser

KDE 4.11.3 intermittently forgets plasmoids (2013-12-14)
by Steven P. Ulrick
Hello, Everyone
OK, this is getting kind of silly... I USED to have an issue with KDE
intermittently forgetting my plasmoids and other desktop settings.
Now, I can't get KDE to remember them at all! As an experiment, I just
got my desktop to look like I wanted it to, then I did the following:
1. "Leave | Save Session"
2. Change these files to read-only:
~/.kde/share/config/activitymanagerrc
~/.kde/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc
3. Log out, and then back in.
The result? No plasmoids at all!
These are old screenshots of how my desktop SHOULD have looked when I
logged back in, and how it actually DID:
http://www.afolkey2.us/gallery3/index.php/Assorted/KDE4_11_00-Desktop-Scr...
http://www.afolkey2.us/gallery3/index.php/Assorted/KDE4_11_00-Desktop-Scr...
The big difference between KDE's behavior now and how it's been in the
recent past is that I am not ever able to get my desktop to stay
looking the way that I want it to.
Check out these two threads on this subject:

have some good ideas about this issue.

OT: cron help
by Mike Wright
Hi all,
I'm trying to execute a command once a minute. As a test I place this:
0,1 * * * * /bin/ping -c1 w.x.y.z > /dev/null 2>&1
in /etc/cron.d/everyMinute
but nothing is happening. I've done "service crond restart".
Any ideas?
Thx, Mike Wright

Re: Strange Warnings on updating tonight (SOLVED)
by Howard Howell
Hi, guys,
This may not link as a thread because I inadvertently deleted the
thread responses in Evolution, and I couldn't figure out how to find the
thread from the archives information (it might be helpful to put a reply
link in the archive stuff, for dummies like me.)
It took a bit of digging, but once you guys said it was solved, I was
able to find the thread. I used the command: "group_command=compat"
inserted into /etc/yum.conf, which apparently inhibited the messages.
Is there a better way?
A question remains, though, even after reading through lots of stuff
about yum groups, knowing about the groups presented in the add/remove
software utility, and understanding enough to be somewhat dangerous in
software management, but not enough to be good, I do not yet understand
the utility of the group listings on the local machine. I think it is
to automate the install/remove process for the group and utilities
involved, but I did not see that stated anywhere.
I did read the documentation on yum groups I found on Google, but I am
afraid it didn't help me personally very much. If there is a "yum
groups for dummies" somewhere maybe that is what I need.

Les H

I tried to fix this but "yum clean all", "rpmdb --initdb", "rpmdb

I can't update rpm, yum, python and others.
Any advice how to fix this?

auto-mounting removable drives
by Paul Allen Newell
Hello:
I am running F19 xfce on a 32bit box (fully updated at the time of this
test)
I have "Applications Menu -> Settings -> Removable Drives and Media" open
Under "Removable Storage":
[checked] Mount removable drives when hot-plugged
[checked] Mount removable drives when inserted
[checked] Browse removable media when inserted
[not checked] Auto-run programs on new drives and media
[not checked] Auto-open files on new drives and media
Nothing else is checked on this or all the other tabs.
Whether I hot-plug a memory stick into the computer or plug it in before
powering on, it never mounts the volume until I manually go to the icon
on the desktop and tell it to "please go mount yourself"
Am I not understanding the options under "Settings -> Removable Storage"?
I first encountered this in F16 under xfce but figured I wasn't
understanding something as I had just switched from F14 gnome where I
could hot-plug
I have three Linux boxes and it doesn't auto mount on any of them, so I
am not thinking it is a hardware problem to a particular machine.
This also happens with cd/dvd when inserted ... have to manually "please
go mount yourself" (and, yes, the phraseology is intentional as I am
rather frustrated by this)
Thanks in advance for any advice

International phonetic alphabet fonts.
by Rolf Turner
I apologise for the lack of articulateness in this question; I am
floundering a bit. Basically --- how can I obtain a font which will
render the symbols of the international phonetic alphabet?
I tried "yum list font" just now (prompted by another posting on this
mailing-list) and got a catalogue of about a brazillion fonts, but none
that seemed to be related to the international phonetic alphabet.
Searching through this catalogue for "international" or "phonetic"
turned up nothing. Searching for "IPA" turned up:
> ipa-ex-gothic-fonts.noarch : Japanese Gothic-typeface OpenType font by IPA
> ipa-pmincho-fonts.noarch : Japanese Proportional Mincho-typeface
> OpenType font
> : by IPA
which seem to pertain to Japanese rather than to the international phonetic
alphabet, so I don't *think* that these are anything to do with what I want.
A client for whom I am consulting in respect of statistical analysis of some
linguistic data tells me:
> The IPA font I used is called Ipa-samd Uclphonl SILDoulosL. I think it
> is one of the common available options in Microsoft, the other ones are
> Ipa-samm Uclphonl SILManuscript and Ipa-sams Uclphonl SILSophiaL.
But this is Micr$oft rubbish. Is there any way I get an international phonetic
alphabet font for Fedora so that I can see my client's data on my machine?
BTW, I am (still) running Fedora 17. Have not had the courage to upgrade to 18
or 19. My system is running very satisfactorily (except for the font problem that
I am having) and I strongly adhere to the principle "If it ain't broke don't fix it."
cheers,
Rolf Turner

failed updates
by Frank McCormick
Just tried to update my Fedora 19 with yum check-update. It seems
every mirror has a problem:
http://mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca/fedora/linux/updates/19/i386/repodata/r...:
[Errno -1] repomd.xml does not match metalink for updates
Trying other mirror.
ftp://mirror.nexicom.net/pub/fedora/linux/updates/19/i386/repodata/repomd...:
[Errno 14] curl#7 - "Failed to connect to 2607:f1f0:1:3::2: Network is
unreachable"
Trying other mirror.
One of the configured repositories failed (Fedora 19 - i386 - Updates),
and yum doesn't have enough cached data to continue. At this point the
only
safe thing yum can do is fail. There are a few ways to work "fix" this:
1. Contact the upstream for the repository and get them to fix the
problem.
2. Reconfigure the baseurl/etc. for the repository, to point to a
working
upstream. This is most often useful if you are using a newer
distribution release than is supported by the repository (and the
packages for the previous distribution release still work).
3. Disable the repository, so yum won't use it by default. Yum
will then
just ignore the repository until you permanently enable it
again or use
--enablerepo for temporary usage:
yum-config-manager --disable updates
4. Configure the failing repository to be skipped, if it is
unavailable.
Note that yum will try to contact the repo. when it runs most
commands,
so will have to try and fail each time (and thus. yum will be
be much
slower). If it is a very temporary problem though, this is
often a nice
compromise:
yum-config-manager --save
--setopt=updates.skip_if_unavailable=true
failure: repodata/repomd.xml from updates: [Errno 256] No more mirrors
to try.
http://fedora.mirror.nexicom.net/linux/updates/19/i386/repodata/repomd.xml:
[Errno -1] repomd.xml does not match metalink for updates
Is this temporary or should I do what Yum suggests ??
