fedup 18->19 and GRUB upgrade several seconds
by Dave Mitchell
I'm currently preparing to fedup an F18 system to F19, looking at these
instructions:
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/19/html/Installation_Guide/ch1...
The bit about updating the GRUB bootloader has got gotten me confused.
My system is a newish x86_64 laptop, with F18 as the only thing on it,
installed from scratch (no upgrades etc).
The instructions say to look in /var/log/anaconda/anaconda.program.log
where you'll find a command similar to
efibootmgr -c -w -L Fedora -d /dev/sdX -p Y -l \EFI\redhat\grub.efi
then later on, run
efibootmgr -c -w -L Fedora -d /dev/sdX -p Y -l '\EFI\fedora\grubx64.efi' -b bootnumber
Now, the command I see in the anaconda log is in fact:
efibootmgr -c -w -L Fedora -d /dev/sda -p 1 -l \EFI\fedora\shim.efi
This differs from the example in the docs by '-p 1' verses '-p Y' and
'shim.efi' verses 'grub.efi'.
So, what values should I give for the -p and -l options?
Also, its not entirely clear what 'bootnumber' value for the -b arg should
be; should this the same number as used to delete the old boot entry in
the previous step?

Re: Applications looking up the own computer name are blocked for several seconds

Hi Richard,

I am confused. The "home.3" domain is added by my 3g-to-wlan router
for sure via dhcp.
Could it be that dhclient was changed to set also the domain
distributed over dhcp, and this is the reason why this issue started
~1 month ago?
However, when I execute the hostname command, I get "user-pc.erdberg"
- where erdberg is the domain of another network I frequently use the
laptop (and also probably have installed it).

Thanks for the hint, I'll give it a try tomorrow.
Thanks, Clemens

Default browser
by Beartooth
In the past, I have always set my default browser to Dillo, which
is very fast and very safe; and it usually shows me at least enough to
guess reasonably well whether I want to go on, switch to another browser,
or skip the site.
I've managed to make it a partial default (under xfce4 in F18).
Pan, for instance, routinely opens links in Dillo. Alpine, however, does
not. (I run Alpine on a remote host, over ssh; is that relevant? It does
open Firefox.)
Like so many other things of late, the software to set default
choices seems to have been moved to some new place, without leaving a
spoor behind to follow. So the place I found to set defaults is quite
likely not the main one. What is??

Can't stand Gnome3, I think it's time for Fedora to move on
by Hugh Caley
I'm voting for Cinnamon, since the developer of compiz isn't interested
in keeping it going. But maybe if MATE was the default for Fedora he'd
change his mind? Or someone else would take over?

Best (Fedora) way to capture/archive videos for LATER editing?
by M. Fioretti
Greetings,
I already know my way around nonlinear video editing on Linux. This
time I'm looking for pointers to general information useful for the
procedure below, as well as tips on the best software and hardware
peripherals to do it on Fedora boxes.
My relatives asked me to "make sense" of the family home made videos.
So I should transform an ugly mess of already existing analog or
digital movies of ALL sorts into one archive of digital video clips
ready for later editing.
"ALL sorts" means everything from VHS and DV tapes to home-made DVDs
and NEVER edited footage by assorted camcorders, smartphones, digital
cameras..
"later editing" means that the "ONLY" thing I'm supposed to do now is:
- capture the video from FireWire camcorders, VHS players etc, when
not already on file
- discard all the useless scenes (like those ten-minutes-long close
ups of the ground of the inside of a backpack, because somebody
forgot to turn the camcorder off and started walking...)
- convert all what's left, regardless of its origin, in clips in one
open digital format. Possibly lossless, possibly able to carry some
metadata inside like author, comments, subject tags...
all the real editing and "publishing", like mixing clips, adding
effects, titles and soundtracks, uploading to YouTube, burning to DVD,
whatever.. will happen later, if/when somebody feels like it. I "just"
have to prepare the raw video archive, that is to save the footage
(minus the useless scenes) all in one place. Therefore, the questions
are:
what do you think is the best "one, open digital format" (assuming it
exists...) that would make it possible later editing and transcoding,
with the smallest possible degradation? What forums or online
tutorials would you recommend to know more on this?
What Fedora-compatible video capture hardware should I buy to hook VHS
players, Firewire camcorders... to my computer?
what tools do you recommend (command-line stuff is OK) for grabbing
the video from that hardware, transcoding and saving to disk only
specified parts automatically (meaning connect the VHS player, then
tell Fedora "save by yourself only the first 5:30 minutes, then from
minute 40:20 to 43:10, of the incoming video")
Thanks a lot for any feedback
