New 3tb hdd thinks it's 801.6 GB
by George R Goffe
Hi,
I'm more than a little confused. I got a new 3tb seagate hdd and typo'd by placing a filesystem on /dev/sdc instead of /dev/sdc1. Now the drive thinks it's a 801.6 GB. At least this is what fdisk -l reports.
Some questions:
1) how do I "fix" this?
2) do I really need to fix this?
3) what did I wipe out by the typo?
Any/all help or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.
Regards,
George...

KDE does not start
by Waldemar Villamayor-Venialbo
Hello all,
I am using Fedora 17 KDE (specifically the computing science spin), I
have been running it for a while and never have major problems ;)
until this morning, since when KDE refuses to start. The system boots
normally to the login screen, I provides my username and password and
it seem that KDE will start, but the scren blink and return to the
login screen.
However, I get logged without any problem via console
(<CTRL><ALT><F2>) and have full access to the system. Does any one
know about this bug and how to solve it? Anything to cleanup from some
script file?
Any help would be apreciated.

opinions about partition sizes
by Alan Evans
Hello, insightful users!
I finally got a new desktop system for my home office, so I get to
tinker with a completely fresh install.
My query is how to best divide the storage. I will be installing the
system on SSD, and I tentatively decided to put swap, /home, /var, and
/tmp directories on a separate, conventional hard drive on the
assumption that this is where most of the rapidly changing data (and
most of the disk writes) would be.
I put swap in it's own partition, sized by the old two-times-RAM
(24GB, in my case -- woohoo!) rule of thumb. Not even sure if that
rule still applies.
The rest of the 2TB spindle is configured LVM, and in that reside the
/home, /tmp, and /var directories. In my ignorance, I guessed 50GB for
/var and 100GB for /tmp, and the rest for /home. (I do a lot of audio
and video work, so I figured /tmp might be used heavily.)
Does that arrangement sound sensible? Does anybody have a contrary
opinion about how it should be divided? Or better: is there a way to
make the division between /home, /tmp, and /var more fluid?

Is this a packaging bug?
by Tom Horsley
I installed dovecot and postfix rpms on my system at work,
and they didn't create the local users in my local passwd
and group files.
Apparently, they didn't create the local users because
the yp server happened to have those same users defined
on it.
When I rebooted my system both postfix and dovecot failed
to start because yp wasn't up yet, so the users were not
defined.
Shouldn't packages like this always want to really create
real local users on they system doing the install?

Clamd and systemd
by Arthur Dent
Hello all,
Has anyone got a simple walkthrough for configuring clamd and getting it
working with systemd on F17?
I am getting lost in the myriad of <SERVICE> and PID (etc. etc.) things
I have to change and .conf files I have to edit and move...
In particular, what am I supposed to do with
the /usr/lib/systemd/system/clamd@.service file?
On previous Fedora installs (pre F15) I used to use this excellent
script which took all the pain out of setup:
http://blog.christophersmart.com/2009/12/17/script-for-configuring-clamav...
if that's line-wrapped try this:
http://tinyurl.com/clamdscript
but I am not confident that this script will now properly configure
systemd now that I am rebuilding a F17 server.
Any hints, tips, guides, handholding, or smacks on the head gratefully
received...
Thanks

MTP Support in Fedora
by Dave Cross
I can't be the only person with this problem.
I have a Nexus 7. The Nexus runs Android Jellybean. Recent versions of
Android (like Jellybean) have removed support for USB mass storage and
the Nexus now connect to my Fedora 17 desktop using MTP.
This seems to be a problem as MTP support in Fedora (perhaps in Linux
in general) appears to be appalling. I have libmtp installed and up to
date. When I plug in the Nexus, both RhythmBox sees it and claim to
display the music found on it. But it doesn't find the MP3s I've
downloaded using the Amazon MP3 application. Banshee doesn't detect
the Nexus at all.
I've seen talk of something called "mtpfs", but that doesn't seem to
be available from the Fedora repos. Another app called gMTP sounds
like it might be useful, but is also not available for Fedora.
Has anyone else found a way round this problem? Is anyone packaging
mtpfs or gMTP for Fedora?
Thanks,
Dave...

Huawei E1552 no longer connecting?
by Christoph A.
Hi,
I have problems to get the Huawei E1552 UTMS modem working, it used to
work with F14-16 (now I'm using F17)
I suppose usb_modeswitch is working as it should (see logfile).
But I'm not sure about these lines:
line 152 - 154:
NetworkManager[771]: <warn> /sys/devices/virtual/net/ppp0: couldn't
determine device driver; ignoring...
pppd[16863]: Modem hangup
pppd[16863]: Connection terminated.
entire loglines regarding the usb + network manager:
http://paste.org/54372 (189 lines)
What could the problem be?
thanks in advance,
Christoph

Travelling Linux.....
by EGO-II.1
Hello all, I am in need of some advice. I have received a tablet for my
birthday (Acer Iconia Tablet A200-XE) My question is, is there a way to
install Fedora on the tablet? I know I have a USB port on it and that I
can put Fedora on the USB stick as an install file, but how do I get the
TABLET to read info from the usb stick FIRST and then install Fedora on
it? It's not like a PC or laptop where you can alter this info in it's
BIOS....at least not that I can tell, but I want to try and get Linux on
there (and yes, I KNOW that Android is a form of Linux!) I just want to
see if it's possible and how it would run, also does Fedora have the
necessary "tools" to work with a touch-screen environment?.....just
curious and thanks!!

USB Installation - LiveUSB Creator
by Manish Kathuria
I need to use a USB stick for installing Fedora 17 on a system and
LiveUSB Creator is the program for creating a bootable Live USB
sticks. As per the documentation, we need to use the Live ISO image
to create a Live USB stick using this program. However, if the sole
purpose is installation, can we use the installation CD or DVD ISO
images for creating the USB installation media ?
Thanks,

UEFI bootkit
by Mike Wright
And in today's news:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/09/19/win8_rootkit/
A few things in particular stood out to me:
1) "Writing a bootkit couldn't be an easier task for virus writers with
the UEFI framework available, much easier than before when they needed
to code in pure assembly."
2) "... unless SecureBoot is used to ensure that only digitally signed
UEFI bootloaders can be executed at the system bootup.
3) "... enabling SecureBoot by default effectively limits user choice."
Great! MS shoots self in foot, others in head. We saw it coming :/
