Adding fonts
by jonetsu
Hello,
I'd like to know now to add fonts so that LibreOffice and Gimp can
use them. For instance, I have downloaded a HGRSKP.TTF file which is a
Japanese font. What is the procedure to make available that font in
the system ? Also, some fonts are .exe files. Are these also
installable in Fedora ?
Thanks !

Post install customization
by Sophie Sperner
Dear all,
I managed to edit menu items by hand and I liked that kind of exercise.
Now, I did *yum remove gnome-online-accounts* but the item "Online
Accounts" is still appearing in the user menu on the right side of the
gnome panel when you click the quick-quit button. I thought a little and
did (with intent to hide the "Online Accounts" using already installed
extension that works with the user menu):
cd ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/Shut_Down_Menu(a)rmy.pobox.com/
vim extension.js
Then I found in the code these lines and added the commented code:
fakeUpdateSuspendOrPowerOff = function() {
this._haveSuspend = false;
this._suspendOrPowerOffItem.updateText(_f("Shut Down..."), null);
// this._haveOnlineAccounts = false;
// this._onlineAccountsItem.updateText("Online Accounts2", null);
// this._onlineAccountsItem = null;
}
But when I restart the shell (Alt-F2-r) the Online Accounts item does not
disappear.
The problem is that I do not know which properties has *this* object and so
maybe I'm wrong with guessing names (I also tried *_haveAccounts* and *
_accounts*).
Could you please help me in removing the "Online Accounts" from the user
menu?
With love.

how to stop yum update -
by Bob Goodwin
I've run into this problem before. My ISP appears to have some early
morning problem and when I start yum update it simply keeps trying
to find another update. I can live with that and just try again
later but there is no graceful way to tell yum to stop!
I logged into a new terminal and tried reboot, the screen went gray
and it looked like the yum update was still going? Finally had to
press the computer "Reset."
I've rebooted this computer four or five times this morning as a result.
How can I stop the yum update? None of the usual stuff like CTRL+c
works. This is F-17/64 bit.

I/O or CPU bandwidth issue or wget issue or perhaps isp???
by JD
fc16 (latest updates) + wget-1.12-4.fc16.i686, and system load
negligible when I start wget.
CPU is Athlon64 3700+ (but I run i686 kernel/apps).
Sometimes, wget chokes
25% [+++++=====> ] 1,000,855,688 --.-K/s
eta 27m 57s
even though I can actually start another download in a a separate terminal)
of the same file from the same server with no delays, which in turn after
a while chokes as above. The download speeds fluctuate as low as a few
hundred
Kbytes/s to 2.70 Mbytes/s. It usually chokes when it reaches the high
end of
download speeds.
I have measured my disk i/o throughput using dd from one drive (on the
internal
eide bus) to the external eSATA drive connected to system via a dual
port eSATA cardbus.
The speed ranges from 20 to 27 megabytes/s.
The wget download goes to the external eSATA drive /dev/sdb, on
partition sdb5 (7200 rpm).
So, I am at a total loss with the reason why this is happening (and
frequently within the last few days).
Also, during wget runs, iostat -chm 5
avg-cpu: %user %nice %system %iowait %steal %idle
15.64 0.00 14.80 13.74 0.00 55.81
Device: tps MB_read/s MB_wrtn/s MB_read MB_wrtn
sdb 7.82 0.00 1.94 0 9
sdb1 0.63 0.00 0.01 0 0
sdb2 0.00 0.00 0.00 0 0
sdb3 2.54 0.00 0.04 0 0
sdb4 0.00 0.00 0.00 0 0
sdb5 4.65 0.00 1.89 0 8
shows no obvious bottlenecks during 2.2 mbyte/s download speed snap shot.
Does anyone have an idea what I should be monitoring in order to see
the event that is leading to this?
As I stated above, it does not seem to be the server because I can
immediately start another transfer of same file from same server without
seeing any delays.
By the way, I am not ruling out the ISP as the cause of the hickup.
Finally, ultimate reason I am posting this issue is because wget seems
to remain
in the chocked state and does not simply close the connection and
immediately open
a new one. Yesterday, it remained in the chocked state all night, until I
interrupted wget and restarted the download (with -c of course) in the
morning.

Strange behaviour in SSHD
by 某因幡
Hi,
When I ssh to the server, client gets a "Broken pipe" error and
disconnects immediately.
So I am trying to strace the server process, but if I attached to the
server process with strace, the problem will be gone. And after
detaching, it comes back.
The server is a Cent OS 6.0.

Linux uncrackable...?
by jdow
Just a wee little note about uncrackable Linux. "Staminus.net" is a
server farm in the Fullerton Ca area. They proudly advertise Fedora,
AMD, MySQL, and other trademarks at the bottom of their page.
It seems they either have a client who is interested in cracking other
machines or one of their machines, a Fedora machine one rashly presumes,
has been compromised and used to launch attacks. The gonif tried to log
into my machine via ssh 64 times. He managed one password failure and
63 firewall rejects within 3 seconds. I sent them a note that 72.8.134.103
appears to be a bad boy.
My take away from this is that absolutely nothing except a totally
disconnected machine in an impenetrable safe is uncrackable, even Fedora
machines. Some form of "AV" tool is called for as well as routine checks
with the various system check utilities. Even that won't prevent 100% of
all attempts from succeeding. But it will help.
This paranoia attack has been brought to you by an interesting confluence
of attack and website advertising. Now I return you to your regularly
scheduled message format attacks on each other.
{^_-} <- for the dense ones, that is a wink.

Hi,
I've just "found" -I guess it wasn't lost, but I didn't know about it -
"The Linux Command Line" as a .pdf, some 500 pages of (to my mind)
friendly explanation of the Command Line. It shows differences between
distros, & gives lots of "go try this & see what happens....". So far
(page 120) my system still works!!!!
The file name I have is
http://sourceforge.net/projects/linuxcommand/files/TLCL/09.12/tlcl-09.12.pdf
The book can also be purchased ready printed from:
http://www.lulu.com/content/paperback-book/the-linux-command-line/7594184 ($40-ish)
Hope that helps
