Console broken since F10
by Lars Eighner
I find bug reports back at least as far as Fedora 10 indicating console
resolution has been broken (by setting an unreadable resolution in the
kernel) since at least Fedora 10.
What was the last release of Fedora in which the console actually worked?

Solved - Console resolutions problems
by Lars Eighner
Surprisingly enough, Fedora 15 will honor the nomodeset flag in the kernel
boot line. With boot to console (multi-user, formerly known as run level 3)
& the splash screen dispensed with, good console comes up.
On startx, Gnome3 complains that I will miss the full wonderfulness and
ecstaay of the Gnome experience. Boo-hoo-hoo! I will try to bear up under
the pain. :) But actually gnome seems to work fine -- well as fine as a
bloated, moron GUI can work. And the good console is restored on exit from
Gnome.
Now on to the hell of trying to bring up ppp on demand ...

perl-lib attempts to extract something into /usr/local
this is probably the wrong spot for it
some systems will have /usr/local nfs mounted read only so the perl install
will complain.

fbset doesn't seem to work in F15
by Lars Eighner
I have learned that it is fbcon that is my enemy.
So I yum'd fbset. The fbset man page says the fbman page is broken.
I tried it anyway after consulting fbset -help. It appears that fbset
cannot set ANY mode listed in /etc/fb.modes ... err, so why does fb.modes
exist if it does not describe any acheivable modes?

How to disable teardrop screen?
by Lars Eighner
Things got better when I reinstalled and discovered I can install F15
on a ext2 partition, and such a partition can actually be created with the
install disc. This enabled me to mount the F15 partition RW in FreeBSD which
has a sane console resolution and font, so I can actually read and edit
the F15 configuration files.
So far I have disabled the grub background and unhidden the grub menu.
Surprisingly enough, grub has a more-or-less acceptable font and resolution.
Unfortunately even though I set BOOTUP to verbose, the teardrop screen comes
up and wipes out the grub resolution and font and also wipes out any VGA
setting done at boot. Evidently the teardrop represents the trail of tears
on the quest for an legible console font and resolution.
So, my issue is how to keep the teardrop screen from coming up, and how to
stop the resetting of the console resolution that accompanies. I have been
through every file in systemd configuration without finding a likely
suspect.
(Meanwhile, busy trying to re-create en_US.iso88591 locale which seems
somehow to have got lost.)

floppy accessed but would't reads
by Vinny Onelli
Hello,
I have tried about all suggested tricks, I got to the point where the it
shows the floppy icon. If I double click on the floppy icon the diskette
is accessed and try to read it, and then the message appears, "Unable to
mount location no media in the drive". the drive and the media works
fine with Windows. Any suggestion?

browser window falls apart
by Gergely Buday
Hi there,
I write here to get directions. I already filed a bug report to
Firefox but the advice I got there did not help much. They suggested
to switch off hardware accelarator but the symptom remained.
I have an Asus barebone pc with a built-in nvidia video card. I use it
with a dual monitor setup. When using Firefox, the rendered web page
often falls apart, and I even cannot click on some links because they
are shown at another place than the brower expects the click on them.
I use the fedora-packaged nvidia drivers.
>From the above, what do you think, what could be the root of this
problem? Nvidia, X/freedesktop or Firefox ?
