Internet connection issue
by Alex
Hey all,
I've had this issue for a while, and since I just found this mailing
list, I figured I'd give it a shot. I've been using Fedora for about six
months now, and one thing I noticed is that whenever I'm downloading
anything (Fedora updates, random files in Firefox, torrents etc..) my
internet connection slows to a crawl. It affects the rest of the network
as well. If I'm downloading Ubuntu updates for example, it takes 2-3
minutes just to load Google sometimes, and the other people in the house
on the computer at the same time notice it as well. I've gotten to the
point where I have to wait until late at night to download anything.
One thing that makes me think it's something with Linux is that I have
the same issue in , but it does not occur when I download using Windows.
When I download in Windows (XP, Vista whichever), it doesn't affect my
ability to browse the web (or any other computers in the house for that
matter).
I'm just curious if anybody has ever heard of this issue. I'm done
everything I can think of (look at router settings, reseting my router
to factory settings and such) and I'm just not sure what is going on.
The only connection I've made is that it happens in Linux and not in
Windows. If anybody can shed any light into a fix or something I can
try, I would definitely appreciate it!

No ethernet connection -
by Bob Goodwin
New F-15 install.
How is the ethernet connection made/assigned, whatever? I made
some changes via chkconfig and lost eth0 and eth1. Ethtool
simply reports no devices. Is there a routine for setting up
eth"x" or does it just have to happen automatically? That seems
unlikely.
I keep thinking it's simpler to re-install than mess with
troubleshooting some of these problems, perhaps F14 which I know
works for me. It is a learning experience however, if nothing
else I am learning what not to do!
Help appreciated.

Unable to copy my Kodak Cam Photos
by JD
I can view the list of photos in my Kodak Camera in
/sdb3/home/jd/.gvfs/gphoto2 mount on
usb%3A003,008/store_00010001/DCIM/100V1253
I used shotwell (shotwell-0.8.1-3.fc14.i686)
to import all of them.
I already had 2 large directories of photos in ~/Pictures/2011 and in
~/Pictures/2010
However, as soon as I started to import the photos, shotwell destroyed the
directory contents of ~/Pictures/2011 and in ~/Pictures/2010
Users beware! This software does and will destroy your collection too!

/var/log/messages question
by Tom Horsley
Just for curiosity, why has no one ever arranged to
log something like "Hey! I'm booting the system again!"
as the very first line in that goes to /var/log/messages
when the system is booting?
If would be real convenient to have a known string to
search for that always precedes the rest of the messages
in a new boot.

"hald" just won't die
by John Wendel
I just did an F15 LXDE install on an old laptop (incidently, best
install I've ever done, bravo LXDE quys).
Now I see 9 processes with "hald" in their name, and 3 processes named
"udevd" running. I thought hal was supposed to be gone. I also see
udisk-daemon and hald-addon-storage both polling /dev/sr0.
This is a really low-end laptop, can I get rid of any of the hal stuff?
Thanks

Gnome 3 Nautilus and OEFIIOW (Open Each Folder in Its Own Window...)
by Fernando Cassia
OK, updated to F15, no major complains so far, except for the
extremelly round window corner borders, and excessive Mac-ism of it
all (and super large app title bar, what's with that?).
Getting acquainted with Gnome 3... It's not very annoying... just will
take a while to get used to it, I think. I really like the apps search
feature on the desktop... but I was used to having everything in
subfolders and with clicking. Still, the command line junkie in me
kinda likes typing to launch apps instead of mouse-manouvering.
But the super-annoying prize goes to Nautilus.
Not only have they made the folder view default to "click replaces
current folder contents", but also when you disable it
(Edit->Preferences, Select "Behavior" tab) and click "Open each folder
in its own window" it behaves as I'd expect with the only exception
that single-clicking on any subfolder on the sidebar, instead of
changing the current window contents to the desired one, opens a new
folder !! this is insane).
So, is there a way to make DOUBLE CLICKS open a new window, but single
click on the sidebar just change the current folder view contents?.
That's how I expect a filesystem browser to function...

How does the user theme extension work?
by Sam Varshavchik
I installed gnome-shell-extensions-user-theme. Based on my Googling, this
should get me a "Themes" tab under Activities. But there's nothing there. No
change after a reboot. Somebody give me a clue on how to use it.

NFS mounts at boot broken on F15?
by Ed Greshko
It seems that NFS automounts on F15 are broken?
I have the usual bits set in fstab, one of them being
misty:/syntegra /syntegra nfs4 rw 0 0
It doesn't get mounted, and following the advice in the boot.log I see
the following....
[egreshko@meimei ~]$ sudo systemctl status syntegra.mount
syntegra.mount - /syntegra
Loaded: loaded
Active: failed since Sat, 28 May 2011 08:26:48 +0800;
1min 33s ago
Where: /syntegra
What: misty:/syntegra
Process: 995 ExecMount=/bin/mount /syntegra (code=exited,
status=32)
CGroup: name=systemd:/system/syntegra.mount
Anyone else seeing this? Is it related to this bugzilla?

A mount after book works just fine....

Yes I was:
1) rpc.svcgssd isn't required unless using kerberos
2) the /etc/exports file wasn't right.
