KRandRTray, how does it work ?
As User if you set resolution to the size you want and accept , after
Logging out of User and then log back in , the resolution setting has
changed. How do you as User lock in setting so it will not change.

Bash regex issue
by Emmett Culley
I have a bash script I've been using in CentOS that no longer works in Fedora 14. The pertinent lines are:
mac=`echo $2 | tr a-z A-Z`
if [[ "$mac" =~ '[0-9A-F][0-9A-F]:[0-9A-F][0-9A-F]:[0-9A-F][0-9A-F]:[0-9A-F][0-9A-F]:[0-9A-F][0-9A-F]:[0-9A-F][0-9A-F]' ]]; then
echo 'good'
else
echo 'Invalid MAC address'
fi
In CentOS or RHEL5 setting parameter 2 = 00:00:00:00:af:df works as expected, but not in Fedora. By adding -x to the first line of the script the output to the terminal in CentOS looks like this:
++ echo 00:00:00:00:af:df
++ tr a-z A-Z
+ mac=00:00:00:00:AF:DF
+ [[ 00:00:00:00:AF:DF =~ [0-9A-F][0-9A-F]:[0-9A-F][0-9A-F]:[0-9A-F][0-9A-F]:[0-9A-F][0-9A-F]:[0-9A-F][0-9A-F]:[0-9A-F][0-9A-F] ]]
+ echo good
good
In Fedora it looks like this:
++ echo 00:00:00:00:af:df
++ tr a-z A-Z
+ mac=00:00:00:00:AF:DF
+ [[ 00:00:00:00:AF:DF =~ \[0-9A-F]\[0-9A-F]:\[0-9A-F]\[0-9A-F]:\[0-9A-F]\[0-9A-F]:\[0-9A-F]\[0-9A-F]:\[0-9A-F]\[0-9A-F]:\[0-9A-F]\[0-9A-F] ]]
+ echo 'Invalid MAC address'
Invalid MAC address
Note the "\" before each "[" in the regular expression.
Any ideas what is going on here? Is there a better forum to ask this question?

Can't print to parallel port with Fedora 14
by Colin Paul Adams
I have a laser printer which was working fine. Unfortunately the
computer to which it was attached (which was running Fedora 12) proved
to be sick.
So I've tried moving the printer to two other computers in turn (one
32-bit, one 64-bit) running Fedora 14. I cannot get it to work on either
of them.
I get the message:
lp: driver loaded but no devices found
I tried googling which suggested trying:
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
options parport_pc io=0x378,0x278 irq=7,auto
although this was rather an old message. I tried this and got:
Feb 5 16:14:17 susannah kernel: [ 582.886574] parport 0x378 (WARNING): CTR: wrote 0x0c, read 0xff
Feb 5 16:14:17 susannah kernel: [ 582.886579] parport 0x378 (WARNING): DATA: wrote 0xaa, read 0xff
Feb 5 16:14:17 susannah kernel: [ 582.886581] parport 0x378: You gave this address, but there is probably no parallel port there!
Feb 5 16:14:17 susannah kernel: [ 582.886601] parport0: PC-style at 0x378, irq 7 [PCSPP,TRISTATE]
Feb 5 16:14:17 susannah kernel: [ 582.967136] parport 0x278 (WARNING): CTR: wrote 0x0c, read 0xff
Feb 5 16:14:17 susannah kernel: [ 582.967140] parport 0x278 (WARNING): DATA: wrote 0xaa, read 0xff
Feb 5 16:14:17 susannah kernel: [ 582.967141] parport 0x278: You gave this address, but there is probably no parallel port there!
Feb 5 16:14:17 susannah kernel: [ 582.967157] parport1: PC-style at 0x278, irq 0 [PCSPP,TRISTATE]
Feb 5 16:14:17 susannah kernel: [ 582.967172] IRQ handler type mismatch for IRQ 0
Now CUPS seems to think the pronter is online, but nothing prints anyway
(not surprising in the light of those messages above). (I only actually
have one parallel port, but I couldn;t remember which address
corresponds to lp0).
Any suggestions?

Fedora 14: Shutdown problem
by Terry Barnaby
Hi,
About 1 in 4 times Fedora 14 hangs during shutdown on at least 4 of my systems.
Looking at the shutdown messages (ESC in the splash screen) and adding some
debug statements to /etc/rc.d/rc0.d/S01halt, it hangs after the messages:
"Unmounting file systems"
"init: Re-executing /sbin/init"
with the message:
"mount: you must specify the file system type."
Adding some debug, this appears after the following command is executed:
"fstab-decode mount -n -o ro,remount /dev/sda1 /"
The file system is ext4 on all of the systems and that command looks ok.
Any ideas ?

Printer marker levels -
by Bob Goodwin
I am plagued with the cryptic message:
Printer "Brother-HL-5140": ";marker-supply-low".
This seems to have begun recently, perhaps with the installation of
F-14, I'm not certain? If I knew what it means I might be able to
fix something, alternatively how to eliminate it if I can't satisfy
whatever it's objecting to.
System-config-printers > Properties tells me "Marker levels
[whatever they are] are not reported for this printer" but the
notice keeps coming up anyway.
I print two copies each of five crossword puzzles every morning and
this notice keeps popping up and blocking part of my screen, an
annoyance and one more thing to keep clicking on!
Suggestions?

Gnome3 test repos for F14?
by Clemens Eisserer
Hi,
I've read about the gnome3 testing week, I would like to give Gnome3 a
try and maybe switch over from KDE.
Are there repos with the packages available for F14, or do I have to
use the live-cd?
Thanks, Clemens

Tim,
When I record online audio using audacity, it also records surrounding noise.
How do you block it in audacity ?
Few days before I was recording online audio in my laptop. At the same time
I was talking with my friend. Audacity recorded that online audio along with
my personal talk.
I want to record only the online audio, not any surrounding noise.
How to do it in audacity ?

Problems exporting partitions via NFS
by don fisher
I have three systems, two Ubuntu and one F14. I am trying to move to
F14. Currently I can mount any of the Ubuntu the systems on the three
computers. But when I try to mount the file system exported from F14 I
receive a message from NFS:
mount.nfs: No route to host
I can ping the F14 system, so the name resolution should be ok. I use
the same /etc/exports file on all machines, so is is probably not the
problem.
Is there anything I need to set up with iptables, or PAM?
I am working from the command line. Any advice appreciated.
Thanks
