[OT]: New linux documentation project for blind users
by M. Fioretti
Greetings,
this is an invitation to read and spread the word (**) about a new
Linux/FOSS documentation project by Tony Baechler: free, CC-licensed
audio tutorials about FOSS specifically aimed at blind computer
users. My full interview with Tony is at
http://stop.zona-m.net/node/150
(also because following his guidelines would give great audio
tutorials very useful to **all** FOSS users, not just those with
vision problems)

Yeah... but as I said in that message back in February, there's no
real way to tell if the file is "good" and the hash in the XML file is
incorrect, or if the checksum in the file is correct and the file bad.
As noted in a previous message here, the 32-bit debuginfo package
installs ok if you download it and install it with the path/filename;
I didn't try that with the 64-bit package... all I did was check to see
if it has the same problem as the 32-bit package, and it does...
When I saw that I did a little more digging and it seems ALL of its
architecture types have debuginfo packages with sha1 mismatches.

Where to put local Latex *.sty files under Fedora11
by Reg Clemens
There used to be a place to put local *.sty files for Latex so that they would
be found. Under the current latex under Fedora11 I cant figure out where
that directory might be and am having to copy them into the directory
with the *.tex file to get them recognized. Not nice.
Any Latex users out there that know the answer?
[[ The Latex System seems to be looking in /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/<filename
>/*.sty
but there must be an index to this directory somewhere, as just putting a
new Local
directory in there with the files in it does no good. Thoughts on that
approach??? ]]

Re: Preupgrade??
by Hugh Caley
LVM can be very handy for desktops. If you run out of space on / (or
any other mount that uses LVM) you can attach another disk, add it to
LVM, and expand the filesystem with resize2fs. Easy and quick.

Midori crash and abrt oddities
by Rares Aioanei
Hi y'all,
On F12 and 13, if quitting (ctrl+q) midori after playing a flash file,
it crashes with a SIGSEGV. Abrt starts, asks me if I want to login bugzilla
and starts downloading debuginfos. At the end, it tells me that 13 debug
syms cannot be downloaded and that I should try debuginfo-install
midori, which I do and after that I hit refresh in Abrt, which
tells me the exact same thing : "13 debuginfo packages couldn't be
downloaded" (or smth.). Now, my question is : are these bugs (midori and
abrt) known to you or should I report them?
Thanks,

Preupgrade enhanced??
by Beartooth
Will today's update to Preupgrade enable it to cope with machines
that have less space in /boot than it wants?
Or had we still better install F13 (or, preferably, upgrade to
it) from a whole downloaded DVD??

Fedora 12 on Lenovo IdeaPad S10e
by Jos Vos
Hi,
Can anyone tell me how compatible the Lenovo IdeaPad S10e (more
precisely: product code NS84TNH) is with Fedora 12? Are there
things that do not work out of the box.
I have only found some outdated and/or incomplete reports so far.
Thanks,

[WAY WAY OT] Ubuntu 10.04 and Nvidia driver
by John Wendel
I just tried the live-CD of Ubuntu 10.04 and generally found it to be
very nicely done. But there was a big problem with the Nvidia driver
that I thought we could all learn something from my experience (like
"don't be stupid"), and maybe have a chuckle or two.
After starting, a "helpful" pop-up told me that I needed the Nvidia
driver if I wanted 3D acceleration and certain other (unspecified)
enhancements. It offered to install the driver (after explaining why it
was BAD from a free software perspective), so I said OK. I was then
offered a choice from the 3 driver versions, without any explanation of
which one I needed (I needed the 173 version), and the "recommended"
version was the latest (195 version). STRIKE 1! I selected the 173
version and clicked the "activate" button. After some
downloading/installing, I was told that I needed to restart the system
to use the new driver. IT'S A LIVE CD FOLKS! Restarting of course wiped
out the new driver download. STRIKE2! So, I did the download again and
this time instead of restarting the system, I just restarted X. Luckily,
I know how to kill and restart X because there is no newbie friendly
menu selection to do this. Of course, it didn't work because the Nouveau
driver got loaded first and kept the Nvidia driver from loading. STRIKE
3! I'm out.
Of course, with an installed version of Ubuntu, this process would
probably have worked fine. I really wish the best for Ubuntu, but I
think I'll stick with Fedora.
Sorry for the noise.
Regards,
John
