Installing Frdora 14
by RICHARD C & BARBARA DEVRIES
I have a new system with three identical hard drives. One with windows Xp pro,
one with my data and one initialized but not formatted for Fedora 14.
When I try to install Fedora from a bootable CD Fedora lists all drives with the
same part number and I can't tell the difference. How can I be sure that the
dirve I pick to
format for Fedora is the right one?

I thought I would follow up and point out that it was because of the
GNOME "monitor" application that was forcing the resolution to be
1280x1024 for that user. I didn't realize that was even a
configuration applet that was even available. I thought the nvidia
configuration application would adjust it accordingly, so never even
looked for another program.

Kororaa is back, as Fedora Remix (KDE)
by Chris Smart
Some of you might remember Kororaa from back in the day. Well after
switching to Fedora a year and a half or so ago (and loving it), I've
re-created Kororaa as a KDE Fedora Remix (inspired by Omega, so thanks
Rahul). I've just released an installable beta version of the x86_64
Live DVD (1.5GB) via bittorrent (http://kororaa.org/download/).
If you're looking for something Linux to do over the holidays, I would
love to hear some feedback (good and bad!) about it. I'm keen to see
how I can improve it, and to know whether this is the sort of KDE
system people are interested in (see the website for more details
http://kororaa.org/about). If it's something you're interested in
contributing to, this is a great opportunity ;-)
Thanks!

Thoughts of a user
by Roelof 'Ben' Kusters
Hi There,
I have some thoughts regarding the future and aim fedora developers should
take. I - as a very average normal user - have installed several releases,
and am very happy with Fedora 13, and have no doubt Fedora 14 will satisfy
my needs as well. Having said that, there are some concerns that I'm
missing in the direction Fedora seems to be taking.
I can not code to save my life, so all that follows are things I think
developers should think about, but please do not consider what I say here
serious accusations. I'm just stating, what I - as a very average user -
am missing.
1) Looks: Forgive the curse-words, but Linux has been surpassed in looks
by as far as I can see all other OSs. I don't know all, but Windoze and
Mac all look better on lesser graphic-cards. Things like true
class-borders should be developed. True see-through should also be made
possible for apps like conky et al.
Btw, I Love the F14 background.
2) Wifi: It may be a sore point, but there is no ease of installing
(newer) machines with built in wifi cards. While I understand that all
those things are built for functionality with Windoze, and that many
manufacturers don't make their own Linux drivers, but even with the
correct drivers it doesn't often work. I feel it should be on the
forefront of the developers attention to make wifi work more easily - on
all machines. Wireless computing is getting more and more popular, and is
the future for the internet. So if Linux wishes to survive (sorry to put
it so strongly), it is important that wifi works as easily as when
installing Windoze. It doesn't; check the forums, check google. Few issues
are so frequent.
3) Hardware management: su -, lshw, isn't good enough a hardware manager
for the average user. A new app should be developed that looks better and
is interactive. Enable and disable certain hardware should be an option.
Finding manufacturer's details of driver-less hardware is a must. Aida32
springs to mind, XP's Device Manager springs to mind. GUI, interactive.
This is necessary to appeal to the average user - ie. me.
And while we're at it, try and make the wifi-card enableable through this
app; rfkill unblock all doesn't always do it.
As I said, just some thoughts. Do with it what you see fit. I'll keep
using Fedora till it stops working. This is what I'm missing. Note that
if all this is already available, it isn't well enough advertised.

F14: Encfs/procmail problem setting st_atime unexpectedly
by Corinna Vinschen
Hi,
I'm running into a strange problem using procmail and mutt, with
some of my MBOX mailboxes stored on an encfs encrypted directory.
This is not the known problem with hardlinks, rather it's a problem
with st_atime.
My default mailbox folder is on an unencrypted filesystem (ext4). Some
mailboxes with more confidential stuff I'm storing in an encfs mounted
directory on the same ext4 FS. The FS mount options are default, which
includes the relatime option.
When I set my mail delivery up I found that mutt didn't notice when an
encrypted MBOX file received a new message via procmail. A bit of
experimenting showed that the setting "check_mbox_size=yes" rectified
this problem. However, "check_mbox_size=yes" is kind of a hack with
annoying side-effects, so that's not really a solution.
Eventually I found the following strange behaviour.
- When I append data manually to a file on the encfs, only st_mtime and
st_ctime changes, as expected.
- When procmail appends new messages to an unencrypted mailbox, only
st_mtime and st_ctime changes, as expected.
- However, when procmail appends a message to an encfs encrypted MBOX,
it doesn't only change st_mtime and st_ctime, but also st_atime!
Naturally this breaks mutt's algorithm to detect mailboxes with new
mail. For the time being I tweaked mutt to recognize mailboxes with new
mails also if st_atime == st_mtime, but that's almost just a bad hack as
using check_mbox_size=yes.
So the real question is, why does st_atime change here at all? I tried
the debug option for procmail, but the debug output didn't contain
anything helpful.
Does anybody have a hunch what happens here?
Thank in advance,
Corinna

Not able to scale the cpu-frequency
by Martin Haug
Hello,
I got a problem with my (more or less) fresh Fedora 14 installation: The
cpufrequency stays at 1Ghz all the time, even with high cpu usage. I'm
also not able to scale the frequency manually using the applet cpu
scaling inside gnome (If I try this, nothing happens).
The interessting thing about this problem is, that it works ca. 30
minutes after (re)boot, then something crashes and the decribed problem
arises.
I attached a few infos, if you need anything else, please ask.
Thanks in advance

F14 Kickstart file example, please
by Robert Moskowitz
I am working on installing F14 on a 512Mb system, that only has 503Mb
available, so F14 goes into text mode installation.
I have my F12 kickstart to get the drive layout that I want, and the F14
text mode base install kickstart.
But since F14 in text mode does not give me ANY choices, I need to build
a full kickstart file to install all the things I want, like gnome.
So if someone could send me their basic kickstart file for a f14
workstation, I can try and cobble together something.

Is it possible for Thunderbird-Lightning to delete a calendar on a webDAV server???
by Kevin Cummings
My /var/www/html/dav/Home.ics file disappeared yesterday (just before
noon) from my home server (F13.i686). My laptop (F14.x86_64) was online
at a remote location at the time, and thunderbird was open, and I was
reading emails via dovecot. I found the following entries in my
server's httpd/access_log:
> www.203.238.22 - - [28/Dec/2010:11:56:23 -0500] "GET /dav/Home.ics HTTP/1.1" 200 112440 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101209 Fedora/3.1.7-0.35.b3pre.fc14 Lightning/1.0b3pre Thunderbird/3.1.7"
> www.203.238.22 - - [28/Dec/2010:11:56:25 -0500] "PUT /dav/Home.ics HTTP/1.1" 401 485 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101209 Fedora/3.1.7-0.35.b3pre.fc14 Lightning/1.0b3pre Thunderbird/3.1.7"
> www.203.238.22 - cummings [28/Dec/2010:11:57:32 -0500] "PUT /dav/Home.ics HTTP/1.1" 500 632 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101209 Fedora/3.1.7-0.35.b3pre.fc14 Lightning/1.0b3pre Thunderbird/3.1.7"
This was within seconds of un-suspending my laptop from the
suspend-to-RAM state (after it had connected to one of the local WiFi
connections).
And if I look at the /var/www/html/dav directory on my server:
> # ls -latr
> total 48
> -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 12224 Sep 25 2009 home.ics.saved
> -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 12177 Sep 25 2009 Home.ics~
> drwxr-xr-x. 2 apache apache 4096 Dec 28 11:59 .
> drwxr-xr-x. 24 root root 4096 Dec 29 00:12 ..
It looks to me like my calendar disappeared just before noontime....
(the other files there are from the last time webDAV screwed up on me,
but at that time, 15 months ago, it was only a partial corruption of my
file.)
I didn't (intentionally) do it! How could it have disappeared?
What happened to my Home.ics calendar???? Is there somewhere's
else I can look for clues?
I didn't even notice this until just before midnight last night!
I have logs showing that it was working fine the day before....

Google map takes sooooo long to print.
by Geoffrey Leach
This has been reported in Bugzilla as 661814.
Fedora 14, up-to-date. foomatic-4.0.5-1.fc14.i686. Output to HP
laserwriter 1300, with parallel to USB connector.
On Fedora 13, printing a Google map would take a minute or so from
hitting print to page on the printer. On Fedora 14 (from the beginning)
it takes 15-20 minutes. Printing a single .jpg with the lpr command
yields similar results. Straight text prints immediately, whether
directly or via a2ps.
As the list is not flooded with complaints, I'm guessing that its a
configuration problem. Any suggestions as to what that might be?
Thanks.
