kpackagekit not working
by LPM
I upgraded two systems from F10 to F12 via DVD. Generally, everything is
working well. I do have on remaining problem that I have not been able to
resolve. Previously in F10, I used the default gnome-packagekit to inform
me of new updates. I almost always use yum at the command line to manage
packages, simply because I'm old school. The fewer levels of software
between me and the install, the better. But, back to packagekit. It was
very convenient to have gnome-package kit inform me of available updates
and give me a summary of the changes, as well as whether they were high
priority security updates. So I would like to still have that feature.
For now, I have just gone back to monitoring the package announce mail
list
With F12, I added kpackagekit to the systems after the upgrade, but
kpackagekit does not ever report any available updates. I ran the gui and
checked that everything was set properly. It always gives error messages
about "KPackageKit closed unexpectedly", and "KDE Daemon closed
unexpectedly". Both are Segmentation fault problems.
Is this a known problem. I can find a couple of bugs in BZ that look like
they may be related, but not exactly the same. Is there, a known solution?
Thank you for any information you might be able to give me.

IMPORTANT: Mailing list migration this weekend
by Paul W. Frields
To all fedora-list subscribers,
Please excuse what may be a redundant email; it's an important subject
for everyone here so we want to maximize awareness. The Fedora
Infrastructure team is migrating our mailing lists this weekend, as
seen previously on the official announcement list:
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-announce-list/2009-December/msg000...
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-announce-list/2010-January/msg0000...
If you want the nitty-gritty details from the experts, read both those
emails completely, and use the links they provide to show you exactly
what's happening. Below is a summary for what will happen this weekend:
1. At times, mailing list traffic will appear to stop. Messages sent
to the list will be queued, and when delivery resumes they will hit
the list again.
2. List-ID headers will change, because the lists are moving from one
domain to another.
What do you need to do about it?
* These delays will be temporary, and mail will be queued during any
delay period. If you send something to the list, it may not appear
immediately, but it will appear when the delay is over. Please
don't send tests or other repeated messages to the list, since that
will only make the queue longer.
* Those of you who don't filter mail (i.e. if all your email comes to
one Inbox) may not need to take action. *BUT* if you have Fedora
lists on spam filters, or if you filter your email based on headers
like the List-Id or From address, you'll need to update your filters
this weekend or risk missing some email.
I have a Gmail account which I use for my Fedora list email. I am
editing those filters to search for "list:<old-address>@redhat.com OR
list:<new-address>@lists.fedoraproject.org" when filtering. By making
the change now, hopefully the transition will be seamless from my
perspective. Old to new address mappings can be found in a helpful
PDF[1] prepared by the Infrastructure team.
Thank you for your patience, cooperation, and continued interest in
Fedora, and thanks as well to our Infrastructure team[2] for their
constant improvement of Fedora's 100% free and open source,
enterprise-class services.

Installation plays hardball
by Garrick Sitongia
I just installed Fedora for the first time on my Windows/Linux dual boot
system. The Fedora installer gave me the option of installing over the
present linux installation on the disk, an old Mandriva version. I
assumed this meant the operating system partition. There were 2 other
unrelated ext3 partitions for photo archives and e-mail backup. After
booting into Fedora I discovered that the Fedora installer wiped every
linux partition without confirmation or consent. I have installed other
versions of Linux and I have always been given a choice. Your installer
should indicate that ALL linux type file systems will be wiped, in
addition to the operating system file system.

How to verify nvidia drivers working
by steve
I am building a new FC12 system intended for MythTV which needs the
acceleration provided by the drivers for my nvidia video card. After
following the advice here http://linuxsoftwareblog.com/blog/?p=232 I think I
have them installed properly, but I only say that because X works after the
install.
Is there some kind of test that will tell me for sure if these drivers are
functioning properly and providing the video services they're supposed to?
TIA..

where does Fedora 12 store network / samba shares info
by Kevin Kempter
Hi all;
I was awful close to running out of space on my HD's in my laptop so I bought
2 500GB drives and installed Fedora 12 on them. I've grabbed most of what I
needed from the old drives in several cases I had to pull out my new drives,
install the old drives, boot into my old install (Fedora 10) and pull info
from the system.
I've found that I forgot to grab the IP/settings for a samba share (a LACIE
network drive) I use fairly often. I can mount the old drives via an external
USB enclosure but I don't know where this info would be stored outside of
booting into Fedora 10 again and opening Dolphin --> Network --> Samba Shares
(if memory serves, it's possible that I set it up originally as a zeroconf
share)
I really dont want to swap the drives yet again for this.
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance

Does anyone else think yumex is broken?
by n2xssvv.g02gfr12930
Recently I've found Yumex to be unreliable, getting stuck when trying to
do updates. Yet the updates can be made using yum from the command line.
Also it seems to take far too long to update the status of RPMs
installed and available. Hopefully this will be fixed shortly and I can
again feel confidence in yumex.

reading/logging system console messages {/dev/console)
by Chad Kellerman
Fedora Users,
Maybe someone has run into this problem in the past. Has anyone ever
logged messages that go to /dev/console to a file?
I thought I could see messages by tail -f /dev/console, but if echo "Is
this thing on?" > /dev/console in another terminal, I don't see the
message. if I open up an xconsole I can see them, but that doesn't do me
any good.
In the past we have had a couple hard lock ups (hardware/software
related), and when that happens I can't see any messages in the console
prior to a hard reset.
Thanks for the suggestions,
Chad

Webstart
by Oliver Ruebenacker
Hello,
This one opens fine under any Windows or Mac computer I can get hold
of, but not on my F11:
$javaws http://vcell.org/webstart/Rel/vcell.jnlp
netx: Unexpected net.sourceforge.jnlp.ParseException: Invalid XML
document syntax. at
net.sourceforge.jnlp.Parser.getRootNode(Parser.java:1200)
I'm not sure when was the last time this worked under F11. Any hope
this will work in the near future?
Take care
Oliver
