F11: fvwm2/.xsession
by Frank Elsner
Hi all,
I've problems to get my old enviroment working with my just installed F11.
I've a .xsession and a .fvwm2rc file (which worked perfectly with FC6).
The login screen does not provide
a deskstop selection. Whenever I log in I get a gnome session.
How to get (back) the session seletion on the login screen with F11?
How to get the .xsession file honoured with F11?

I can't offer any helpful suggestions. I would like to confirm that Fedora 11 isn't fully supporting dial up. Does anyone know for sure? I have several old machines that I would like to use Fedora on but I will need dial-up support as well. Can anyone confirm this, or suggest a current Linux distro that does fully support dial-up connections?

name server via dhcp, but don't want dhcp assigned addresses
by Joel Rees
A quick search of the archives didn't turn up anything I could figure
out easily.
Background:
I have ADSL, with a "modem"/router that does filtering, dhcp, etc.
Since I want to refer to the boxes on the internal LAN (natted to
local-address subnet) by name, I have the router set to only
automatically allocate a piece of the subnet. Usually, all of the
internal machines have their IP addresses set statically, thus, to
addresses not included in the automatic portion of the subnet.
The WAN side of the router runs dhcp to my ISP, and gets the dns
server addresses by dhcp, as well.
In the past, the ISP had told us to set the primary and secondary dns
server addresses statically, so I had the router set to serve dhcp
with those address. But I have also set the dns primary and secondary
server addresses for all the boxes by hand to the dns servers
provided by my ISP, so that I was ignoring the dns servers provided
by the router.
Recently, my ISP (a middle-rank provider in Japan) sent around
notices that they were changing their setup, such that the dns
servers would be advertised by dhcp and subject to change. That is,
they said, more or less, "Clear the addresses you've set as your DNS
servers in the DCHP client dialogs" (with example screen shots of
Macs and MSWindows DHCP client dialogs) "so that you get the DNS
addresses provided by the DHCP servers."
On the Macs, there is an option to set the box as a DHCP client with
static IP address, so I can still keep that much of my lan intact.
But the Fedora boxes do not provide a static IP address client as a
setting in the standard dialogs, as far as I can tell.
So, my problem is that I need to tell each Fedora box to accept the
DNS server addresses provided by the DHCP server (the router,
actually, which worries me), but not ask for a host IP address for
itself, but the GUI dialogs in current Fedora don't provide that as
an option.
Am I just missing something there, or will I need to disable the GUI
and dig into text configuration files in /etc/dhclient.d? (nis.sh and
ntp.sh don't seem to be the files I need.)

RSS feeds overflow
by Andre Costa
Hi,
I am subscribed to F11 Security and Testing RSS feeds, and lately (for the
last 3-4 days already) the same feeds are being broadcast over and over
again. This completely defeats the purpose of subscribing to those feeds,
because I just mark all as read since I can't differentiate anymore new
feeds from the old ones.
Has anyone else noticed this? I am using Google Reader in case that matters.

FC10 - Where is system-config-display
by Robert Moskowitz
I just installed FC10 on a system that previously had Centos 5.3. In
Centos, I had system-config-display with the hardware tab to select LCD
1024x768.
I don't seem to have that option right now with the Resolution program
in FC10 and system-config-display is not installed. I tried a 'yum
search system-config-dis*' and did not get a hit.
So how do I get this tool, or how do I increase the resolution beyond
800x600?

Question on using a Joystick as a mouse in Fedora please?
by Richard Sewill
I have a question on using a Joystick as a mouse in Fedora.
I wish to avoid getting carpal tunnel syndrome.
I noticed, when I use regular mice, I have poor hand position.
So far, my wrist is okay...but it gets red if I'm not careful.
I was thinking, it might be better for me,
if I could use a joystick as a mouse.
I have an old joystick, made by InterAct, laying around.
Fedora recognizes my joystick.

I can find the devices, for my joystick, in /dev/input/by-id:

rsewill@rsewill:~ <2:11> $
I installed joystick-1.2.15-23.fc11.x86_64 to test my joystick.
Within this package is the program, jstest.
jstest seems to work with the link pointing to ../js0
rsewill@rsewill:~ <2:15> $

The x-axis, y-axis, z-axis, and all buttons are detected.

jstest with the symbolic link pointing to ../event5 fails with an error.

Any idea how to get around the "Don't know how to use device" error?
I suspect, if I knew how to map x and y absolute axes to relative axes,
I might make progress on getting this to work.
On a side note, I have a dual-boot system.
I tried booting Windows and installed a third party app
to use my joystick as a mouse. I was partially successful.
I could move the mouse using my joystick, but I didn't like the result.
The mouse movement wasn't crisp. The mouse movement started slow.
It was hard to stop the mouse where I wanted the mouse to stop.
I didn't both trying to adjust the third party app preferences.
I uninstalled the third party app after this test.
I only did this test to see if the joystick hardware was working.
Is there a Linux GUI program, perhaps a game, I can use,
to test my joystick to build confidence the hardware and software work?
Thanks, in advance, for any suggestions.

If i unmount it and try to remount it it says sdc1 does not exist.
I am not at the location so physically unplugging then replugging in
the drive isn't a convenient option.
How can I get the os to rescan the usb device so I can remount?

I have a desktop running F11. The computer is an old Pentium 4, 3.0
GHz, 32 bit. It uses logical processors, so I think it's 'an old duo

What I want to do is to accelerate the processor frequency. I use
Blender and frequently I'm feeling need for better performance :-(
As I can see from the output there's 'capacity' field that has higher
value than the one in 'size' field. Does it means it has a capability
to utilise that frequency? And if yes, then how can I speed it up a
bit?
Thanks in advance!

Failed upgrade to Fedora 11 from fedora 10
by Rese Soul
Hi,
I tried to upgrade from fedora 10 to fedora 11. Every thing seemed working
fine, but after downloading every thing and rebooting the os blocks during
startup.
I have thye following error message:
SELinux: Context System_u:Object_r:xdm_spool_t:so is not valid (left
unmapped).
I did the same from fedora 8 to fedora 10 and it worked perfectly. I used
preupgrade.
Thank you
