Display all washed out
by Beartooth
Those of you who remember old-fashioned color film cameras will
remember an occasional badly overexposed pic, in everything looked all
washed out, or bleached.
I have an F11 PC that looks like that.
It's behind a KVM switch with three other PCs, two running F11,
and one still running F10. All the others look normal, and this one used
to.
I've been trying for a couple days to get "yum install system-
config-display" to go to completion. Once it got as far as starting to
download, but then hung again.
Why am I not getting that app? Is there some other way to fix the
washed-out look? It's so bad that most text is very hard to read.

Laptop and monitor power control
by Andrea
Hi,
I have a ThinkPad and just installed F11.
There is a small issue with the screensaver and the monitor power control.
the screensaver kicks in as normal, but after a while it is not updated any more (e.g. the dials of
the clock don't move).
As soon as I touch the mouse, it disappears.
I think that when the screensaver stops being updated, the monitor should actually be suspended and
go black (which it did in F9).
If I go to System Settings -> Display -> Power Control, in the help page it says that this should
not be used for laptops. It suggests to use the Laptop Control Centre from kdeutils.
Does anybody know where it is?

FC 11 NTP setup after install?
by Paul Erickson
I missed setting up NTP during the install of FC-11 on one of my
machines. I have googled the archives, but can't seem to find out how to
set up NTP post install.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Just as an example, I tried to update to 2.6.30.1 kernel on a Fedora 11 system and I get the following:

Erick,
I learned this from some other kind person on this list, and I hope it helps if you are running GNOME. Please do the following:
Go to
System ---> Preferences ---> System ---> Authorizations
Scroll to where it says device-access, select
directly access audio players and see if it makes any difference?
Also if you are there already and you can check if the system automatically mounts removable media
storage --> mount filesystems from removable drives.
Hope this helps in some way. If not, then hopefully some other kind person has a better solution.

I hear you and I am applying the patch from 2.6.30 to 2.6.30.1 as of now. I know your frustrations, but Fedora is staying a bit behind as of now because apparently many things were changed from 2.6.29 to 2.6.30? I don't know the exact reasons, but I understand where you are coming from and I agree with you. Is Fedora countering the saying "Latest and Greatest"? I know that on rawhide a 2.6.31.rcX kernel is being run, that is where the latest and greatest always is, but Fedora Stable should not be so far behind? Should it?

gpk : why so many reboots??
by Beartooth
Rather than trust to auto-updating, and be constantly interrupted
when busy, I disable that and just run gpk-update-viewer by mouse every
day or so, when there are quiet moments, on one machine after another.
One advantage of that, btw, is that when I see an update for an
app I'm sure I don't want, it alerts me to go uninstall it.
One thing bugs me. It seems like practically every update I get
has not one but several of those little icons telling me I have to reboot
when the update finishes.
Is this really necessary?? Why???

http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/patch-2.6.30.1.bz2
Patch is out for 2.6.30.1, how exactly do I do it. I run
patch -P1 < patch-2.6.30.1.bz2 in /linux-2.6.30 directory where the 2.6.30 source was?
Do I extract the patch?
This is where I need more guidance as I have not done it. Usually I just get the entire thing 2.6.30.1.tar.bz2 but now I don't have access to high speed connection and I just want to see if I can do it.
Thanks in advance,
Antonio
