Hello All,
I have a bunch of VHS and 8mm tapes I'd like to convert to DVD or just
keep digital versions of on our home file server. I've done this in the
past with Kino, which worked fairly well.
Since Kino is no longer under active development, and since it's missing
some features I'd like to have (e.g. AVCHD support), I've been looking
for a replacement. Today I discovered kdenlive, and it looks pretty
sweet. I want to try it out on my Fedora 10 x86_64 desktop, but it's
not in the Fedora repos.
The kdenlive website mentions a 3rd party repo, tigro, that has packages
for Fedora. But, I'm a little weary of using a repo I've never heard
of. It's located here: http://mirror.yandex.ru/fedora/tigro/ . Has
anyone used it before?
I saw a bugzilla entry for getting kdenlive into Fedora: the effort
appears to have stalled. Does anyone know what's going on with this?
Regards,
Ranbir

pulseaudio deeply unreliable (Fedora 10)
by Neil Bird
OK, I've had a google, and a bit of tinkering with config. files, and I'm
not really getting anywhere. PA was working OK for me in Fedora 8, but ever
since I upgraded F8 to F10, it's been a right PITA.
It'll either continually stutter (e.g., when playing music often 1-2
times each track) or hiccough and crash under CPU load (firefox loading can
kill it, for example).
Indeed, with my wife playing 'listen', CPU usage is PA itself is some
~20% or more. I have tried the 'tsched=0' hack, but that doesn't seem to
change anything (yes, I restarted PA).
I've seen PA quit itself due to "excessive CPU usage" (I've taken to
running it in an xterm to see when it's gone/what errors it's reporting). I
tried the max cpu flag I found in the PA daemon conf. file, but all *that*
did was just report 'Killed' when it died.
It just seems deeply unreliable. I can fairly reliably stuff it by
running realplay (listening to streamed radio) under padsp, and then
launching mplayer.
The only odd thing I see is some message about the ALSA and/or the kernel
reporting a range of 22.0 to 22.0 db or something, "indicating a bug in the
kernel driver".
So, what to try? Most googles of my symptoms lead to people who've had
enough and removed it. I did even see one report trying to blame nVidia's
drivers (which, regardless of veracity, is no excuse given that it was OK
before).
I'd *rather* get to the bottom of the problem(s), even if it's raising
bug reports and patching for now, but I'm really just fed up with the thing
now. If I can't get it going within a week, next weekend it's off the
machine for good.

f10 boot problem after soft. raid install
by François Patte
Bonsoir,
I have just made a fresh install of f10 using software RAID on two HD.
No problem.
I have two other disks which were unplugged during the install
process. After updating and completing the install, I plugged again
these two disks (on which are data from a former install) and now the
system doesn't boot (I even can't see grub screen)!
If I unplug the two drives, I can boot.....
Did I miss something?
Thanks for any help.

printing from gvim
by Michael Hennebry
When printing a two-page file from gvim,
it gives me a 3/4 inch margin at the top
(I measured) and overflow at the bottom.
A line is missing between the pages.
How do I fix this?
When I print a CUPS test page, the margins are in the range 0.1 to 0.2 inch.
vim's default printer options are 5% for the top and bottom margins.
That shouldn't be a problem. Something seems to be shifting things down.
What am I missing?

kpalmdoc on fedora 10
by Frank Cox
I asked this a while back and never got any reply:
What happened to kpalmdoc on Fedora 10? Somewhere between F9 and F10, it
disappeared from the kdepim rpm.
If it's gone, is there a recommended replacement?

Can jackd and pulseaudio coexist?
by Dan Thurman
I am trying to use Rosegarden, and it seems that it requires jackd
in order to run. Yes I poured over the internet docs but have yet
to understand why using the jack-audio-kit app (qjackctl), jackd
complains that another app is using it and I am guessing it is
pulse-audio?

Hi Martin,
Yup, I have the same problem with Amarok - it did play one CD for me
last week when I first installed it, but now all it finds is a couple of
clips (that I didn't know I'd made) which it calls my local collection.
(and identifies them as something totally unrelated to the actual music.)
I sent the following mail to the list:
***********************************************************
Evening All,
Since my preupgrade from F9 to F10, it seems I cannot see my CD/DVD
players with Dolphin (nor Krusader). Have I killed something else while
trying to get video & sound working with Skype? Or has something else
been moved to a new package & I've missed it??
Thanks all
Dave
PS I won't get started on the "joys" of trying to get sounds working......

Received the following reply from Paul & replied back:
*********************************************************
Do you mean you can't see the actual device files (/dev/...) or you
can't play the media? If you can't see the files, check if they still
exist ('ls /dev/...' from the command line). If you can't play the
media, you'll need to say how you used to do it. Dolphin doesn't play
media itself, it uses Kaffeine (or VLC, or dragon, or mplayer, or ...)
poc
Hi POC,
Neither Dolphin nor Krusader would list or show an icon of anything outside "Home" or "Root";
I found autofs had deinstalled during the upgrade so reinstalled that & my external HDD came back.
Rythmbox one time showed the tracklist, but wouldn't play anything, alsomixer wuld show lots of controls & freeze with nearly 100% CPU usage;
Pulsaudio didn't seem to do anything, so (following the comments in the forum) I deleted PA,
but couldn't take out some of the sub utilis of PA without yum wanting to deinstall everything as nmothing was used by anything else.....
So loaded amarok & music plays automatically but the icons in "places" for the CD/DVD drives are still missing.
The drives show up however in HWLister. /dev shows entries for cdrom & cdrom1 & cdrw, dvd, dvd1 & dvdrw.
????????????
Dave
*******************************************************************
I've just rechecked /dev, and while I have the entries quoted above for
the block devices, there's no folder entry like there is for disks.
It's a RRPITA because I can't even add the devices to "places" in
Dolphin, so I cannot access data discs......

FC10 not installing software properly
by Chris Hogan
I am a Linux newbie, and am having trouble installing software like java and the azureus client. I wish there was a tutorial on setting sudo or whatever I need to set up in order to properly install these packages. Can anyone help???? I am still having trouble getting my two network systems to talk to each other and see each other...it seems that each needs a user and password.
