possible cause of horrifically unreliable NFS?
by Robert P. J. Day
i have a small embedded ARM board and i'm trying to boot it off via
an NFS mount point sitting on my fedora 9 system. i thought i set up
NFS properly in terms of exporting a (debian flavour) root fs but,
when i boot, i get numerous diagnostic msgs of the form:
VFS: Mounted root (nfs filesystem).
Freeing init memory: 112K
nfs: server 192.168.1.241 not responding, still trying
nfs: server 192.168.1.241 OK
nfs: server 192.168.1.241 not responding, still trying
nfs: server 192.168.1.241 OK
... etc etc ...
i'm asking on this list since it's the fedora system that's acting
as the NFS server. if i try to do a normal NFS mount, i'll get a
couple *pages* of those messages and finally a hung embedded system.
when i tried to simplify things with "init=/bin/sh", i got only a
few lines and, finally, a booted system:
sh-2.05b# mount
192.168.1.241:/home/rpjday/ts7250/rootfs/tmp/mnt on / type nfs (rw)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,default)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620,gid=5,mode=620)
tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)
usbfs on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw)
#
what is the most common cause of NFS bouncing back and forth between
OK and "not responding"? should i be messing with the mount options?
read and write sizes or something? it's a 2.6.21 kernel. thanks.

copying lvm with the same name
by Frank Cox
One of my computers died and, of course, there is un-backed-up data on there
that I want to recover if I can. The hard drive seems to be in good shape so I
took it out of the dead box and installed it on this computer (my main desktop
machine.)
I have been doing a bunch of reading about logical volumes and some of what
I've found is self-contradictory, incomplete and stuff that I just don't
really understand (yet.) And, as you can imagine, since this is my main
desktop machine I'm not terribly anxious to just start playing around with
the lvm configuration without knowing what I'm doing.
Here are my findings so far:
[root@mutt ~]# pvscan
PV /dev/sdb2 VG VolGroup00 lvm2 [279.25 GB / 32.00 MB free]
PV /dev/sda2 VG VolGroup00 lvm2 [465.56 GB / 32.00 MB free]
Total: 2 [744.81 GB] / in use: 2 [744.81 GB] / in no VG: 0 [0 ]
[root@mutt ~]# lvscan
ACTIVE '/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00' [277.28 GB] inherit
ACTIVE '/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01' [1.94 GB] inherit
It looks like the machine can see the second drive and the lvm that's on it
/dev/sdb2, but it has the same VolGroup name as /dev/sda2.
What I would like to do is twofold: First, and most importantly, I would like
to mount it as-is so I can copy my data off of there. Second, I would like to
re-format it and add it to the storage capacity that I already have on this
machine. Heck, if it's still a good drive I might as well put it to use.
So, how can I mount VolGroup00 that's on /dev/sdb2? The vgchange command
followed by a simple mount command looks like what I want to do, but what's the
syntax? As I said, I really don't want to bugger up my primary hard drive....

Problem with keyring not really acceptable?
by Hugh Caley
My Fedora 10 machine uses NIS for authentication. I changed my NIS
password. I was able to successfully log into my Fedora box, but my
first attempt to open an SSH session to another machine in
gnome-terminal is blocked by the keyring, which wants the old password.
Is this really acceptable? I don't know why I would need to access my
local keyring in order to open a remote SSH terminal session anyway.
But the keyring never helped with anything; I would still have had to
enter a password for this connection, only with the keyring I have to
enter two.
I don't remember being invited to create the original keyring, nor was I
given an option to fix the problem when it occurred, nor does there seem
to be local documentation to explain what is going on (other than a
general description of what the keyring is supposed to do). I had to
search the Internet to find a way out of this, and I suppose I'll have
the same problem if I change my password again.

F10 and built-in Intel graphics
by Matthew Saltzman
I have a Dell P4 desktop machine with a built-in Intel graphics card.
lspci reports:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller Intel Corp
82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device
(rev 01)
The graphical installer freezes and X freezes after a short time
(usually seconds or tens of seconds) after starting (even with a fully
updated system). I've seen reports of issues with the Intel graphics
driver on F10, but does anyone have a way of making this work or does
anyone know what the status is of the driver?
I'd consider putting another card in, but the only slots in the machine
are PCI and it hardly seems worth it, as I got the machine for free and
it will mostly be running relatively non-graphics-intensive Windows XP
stuff.
TIA.

Preupgrade F-9/F-10 disaster -
by Bob Goodwin
I decided t to try "preupgrade" in the hope of preserving a lot of
configuration. It ran for hours on my satellite connection but fails on
install with "Error mounting device sdc2 as /mnt/f9: mount: special
device /dev/sdc2 does not exist"
I'm not sure how to deal with this since an attempt to boot F-9 produces
screens full of error messages.
The bios permits me to enable/disable individual drives. I began trying
things there without success and went to bed ... I'm awake now and
barely functioning.
Fortunately this F-10 computer is working and may be able to access the
F-9 box although I haven't tried that yet?
Am I the only one with such a problem?
Waht to do next?

Thank you.

freenx-client vs. nxclient/2xterminalserverclient in F10
by Joachim Backes
Hi,
I installed freenx-client.i386 0:0.9-7.fc10 in F10, configured it and
tried to start qtnx, but without success:
Process started
stdout> notQProcess error: 0 crashed. errno:2
Process exited
Process started
Somebody has been successful to use freenx-client?
My aim was to eliminate nxclient or 2xterminalserverclient for getting
rid from some key problems (arrow up now pops up a screen photo windows,
and "|" or "<" are not mapped properly). These problems I never had in a
F9 client machine with nxclient/2xterminalserverclient.
On the server site, which is F9, nx-3.2.0-30.fc9.x86_64 and
freenx-server-0.7.3-11.fc9.x86_64 are installed.
All comments are welcome.

Xserver failed to start (got it to boot gui followup)
by dcooke@efn.org
Finally,
Xserver along with messagebus, named and nfs took almost an hour to
come to life and seemingly working again, but on Shut Down things
are not saving properly and I am back to square one next BootTime.
Should any 'on demand services' be running in order for messagebus,
named and nfs to work? I am showing 'xinetd(pid number)' is
running; but is not in the 'on demand services' list.
I have started or restarted these daemons; Their 'status', saved
and running..everything is seemly fine but Yum, I am still getting
a '..not having a connection available', though 'Nightly yum update
(is showing) enabled'.
Any thoughts on what might be going on and a direction in getting
these three daemons and Xserver running properly again?
Booting is painful,
David Cooke
In trying to get Yum working,
I stopped these services improperly
named
messagebus
nfs
and now my system either takes forever to boot or doesn't at all.
I restarted them and saved but it didn't work on reboot. Seems the
system really needs dbus services and 'messagebus' but I can't seem
to save it in the gui.
Failed to start xserver (graphical interface).
After viewing xserver output and okay to diagnose got 'fatal server
error'. And 'could not init font path element unix/:7100, removing
from list'.
I truly appreciate any help.
Currently using Fedora Core 2.6.17-1.2174_FC5smp
