Slooooow USB key speeds
by Ranbir
Hi All,
I have a Kingston 8G DataTraveler USB stick. When I plug it into one of
the USB 2.0 ports on my Fedora 10 PC (x86_64), the kernel detects it,
and after some magic, Gnome mounts it on my desktop - everything is
honkey dorey.
When I use Nautilus to copy files to it (say a 1 GB movie file), the
transfer speed begins in the 20 MBps range, but quickly drops to 1.5
MBps or less. Obviously, this increases transfer time exceptionally,
essentially rendering the USB stick useless.
I've tried reformatting (as vfat) the stick, deleting and recreating the
partition on it, all several times and to no avail.
The same stick works just fine on my HP Compaq nx7400 Fedora 10 laptop.
I now assume something is either amiss with my PC, or there's a bug
somewhere in Fedora 10 killing USB performance. I've tried searching
for both, but I've come up up with nada.
My PC has an Asus P5Q-E motherboard, an Intel E8400, and 4 GB of RAM. Is
there something about this combination of hardware (don't forget the USB
stick) when used in conjunction with the x86_64 version of Fedora 10,
leads to shitty USB performance?
Regards,
Ranbir

Problems with nfs and Fedora 10 x86_64
by Margaret Doll
I am used to using portmap with nfs. Where is the documentation on
the new rpcbind programs used on Fedora 10?
When I try to mount a partition across the network on the new system,
I am getting
mount /numbers1 mount.nfs: rpc.statd is not running but is required
for remote locking. mount.nfs: Either use '-o nolock' to keep locks
local, or start statd.

firewall suggestions

Hi All;
I need a good network firewall that will give me web content filtering and VPN
(or similar) access. Email spam filtering and ease of use would be a plus.

Poor WiFi Performance
by Phil Bieber
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Hi everybody!
I've recently switched from Ubuntu to Fedora 10 to escape a nasty
problem I'm having but without luck.
I have a DELL Inspiron 640m / e1405 notebook based on a Centrino
chipset with an Intel 3945abg WiFi card and my network connection is
painfully slow. I have a 16MBit/s ADSL connection (according to the
router 14069 kbit/s down and 1189 kbit/s up) and when trying a speed
test I get the following results with Epiphany on Fedora 10:
Down: 200 - 250 kbit/s
Up: 60-80 kbit/s
With Internet Explorer 7 on Windows I get the following:
Down: 7500 - 9700 kbit/s
Up: ~1100 kbit/s
I tried it 3 times on both OS's and within about 10 minutes. The
results from my Fedora tests are way better than expected, because it
sometimes takes up to 5 minutes to open google...
The WiFi network I'm connected to is a WPA encrypted G network with
the AP about 5 meters away from my notebook.
I already did some googling but so far I haven't sound anything that
helped. I even tried the Windows drivers using ndsiwrapper but I
couldnt get them to load properly.

Re: Problem with totem
by gmspro
I typed this in the terminal.
yum install totem-xine
Output:
Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit
Setting up Install Process
Parsing package install arguments
Package totem-xine-2.24.3-1.fc10.i386 already installed and latest version
Nothing to do
Then I typed this in the terminal
/usr/bin/totem-backend -b xine totem
After
this when I trying to play a file like "dbgt35.rmvb" it starts playing
the audio of that video file but it does not play the video .(black
screen)
After this I also typed this in the terminal.
/usr/bin/totem-backend -b xine totem-video-thumbnailer
Can anyone tell me what are these?
totem-audio-preview
totem-video-indexer
totem-video-thumbnailer
What do they do?
Now if I check from Movie Player>help>About
It says :Movie Player using xine-lib version 1.1.16.1
[Note:Same problem for gxine,dragonplayer,kaffeine.
They
play the sound of the video file like "dbgt35.rmvb" but can't play the

Tipically I use xine engine with totem, instead of gstreamer.
You can do:
yum install totem-xine
then you can use totem-backend to verify if setting xine as backend
solves the problem and eventually set it as the default engine for
totem.
[gcecchi@tekkaman ~]$ totem-backend --help
Error: No backend name passed.
Usage:
- As root, to set the default backend, system-wide:
/usr/bin/totem-backend -b <backend name>
- As a normal user, to run a program with a specific backend:
/usr/bin/totem-backend -b <backend name> <program name>
[program options...]
- "backend name" is one of gstreamer or xine
- "program name" is one of totem, totem-audio-preview,
totem-video-indexer or totem-video-thumbnailer
In totem gui you see the engine with
Help --> About
and with xine set you get in the window:
Movie Player using xine-lib version 1.1.16.1

Fedora 10 Update
by potat0
I am relatively new to Linux and need a lot of help.
I did an update for core 9 and the next thing I knew I had been updated to Fedora 10. Fedora 10 boots and starts, does nothing for a while and then comes up with the following message: virbr0: Starting userspace STP failed, starting kernel STP and then just sits there and does nothing.
I cannot access any of my work documents and am starting to panic. Please help :-? :-x

Super user problem FC10
by Croombe F. Pensom
I have installed FC10 five times now but I can NEVER log in as root as
it ALWAYS tells me that the authentication failed.
I did the install very, very carefully as I thought that, maybe, I had
goofed; but, no, I set up root password OK but still cannot do the login
as root.
The only way I can get to root operations is via sudo but, then, I can't
get a gui running (I'm a bit lazy!!).
Any ideas as to why I can't log in as root?

Zip drive on FC10
by Croombe F. Pensom
After having used my Zip drive since FC4, I installed FC10. After
install, the system tells me that the Zip drive is there OK. I put in a
disk but the drive turns and the access light stays on but it won't
mount. After that, it won't unmount either and the only way to fix the
situation is power down and up again. The drive no longer appears when
the "Computer" ikon is opened : floppy, yes, other HDs, yes, Kingston U
stick, yes : but no Zip.
I tried creating a suitable directory and then mounting, but it comes
back and tells me that I must specify the file type. If I do that, it
still doesn't mount.
So, I went in as root, added a suitable line to fstab and fired up
again : the same thing : can't get Zip to mount.
This is frustrating as I regularly use these to store little bits of
useful data without wasting blank CDs and previous FCs operated the
drives OK.
Again, suggestions would be appreciated.

The system sounds work once and once only. After a system sound has been

Any ideas?

F9 dhclient source?
by Steve Blackwell
I'm running a fully up-to-date, as of 2/2/09, F9 system.
$ rpm -q --whatprovides dhclient
dhclient-4.0.0-22.fc9.x86_64
Anyone know where the source rpm is for this? Google only gave me a few hits and those pages were 404s.
Thanks,
