problems with yum and fastestmirror plugin
by Martín Marqués
Is anybody else having hanging problems when trying to update F9? I
found out that disabling fastestmirror plugin makes updates work again
(had to push up debugging with -d 10).

Are you sure it is associated with the firewall? I have the similar
problem, but I've diagnosed it to a failing dns lookup function. After
a restart dns works for a few minutes. Any amount of inactivity, and it
dies. I can get it back by restarting NM.
This dns problem goes back into 2007 (lots of complaints across the
various Linux forums about this), and as far as I can tell, it still
persists in an intermittent manner such that some can get it to work and
others cannot.
This last week I reinstalled F10 i386 from a new downloaded DVD iso
(vanilla install), and the problem persists. I then installed F10 i386
from a DVD contained in the "Fedora 10 Bible", and the problem persists.
I downloaded F10 x86_64 and installed it on a different computer, and
the problem persists. Both machines are dual-boot, and the Windoze side
of each machine works flawlessly.
I'm about ready to try Ubuntu to see if they have solved the NM dns
problem. The complaints in the Ubuntu forums seem to have disappeared a
few months ago...so maybe they got their act together, while the Fedora
community is still fiddling around. Despite the claims, NM in F10,
doesn't "just work."
I'll agree with those who have recommended that we need to get the
network choices back into the installation GUI. I should be able to
select static IP, and it "just works".

Firefox locks up in Bookmarks Toolbar menu
by Michael Schwendt
$ rpm -q firefox
firefox-3.0.6-1.fc10.i386
Firefox locks up X/GNOME if I open the Bookmarks Toolbar menu (by clicking
the ">>" button at the very left) and then drag'n'drop a bookmark.
Can anyone reproduce?

doc to html from a cmdline?
by Steven W. Orr
I have about 75 doc files. If I bring one up in ooffice, I can save it as
a .html file with no problem. Is there a way to do it from the command
line? All this clickety is going to take me too long.
Thanks

Re: WHY I WANT TO STOP USING FEDORA!!!
by Petrus de Calguarium
I can't wait for the new programs and features, so I migrate to the alpha
release as soon as it comes out, just to get it sooner. As a result, I am
still upgrading twice a year, but just a few months before most. I have always
done clean installs, but a week ago, I tried preupgrade, which worked
satisfactorily (I don't think I will preupgrade twice, however, as some .stuff
from old installs seems to get left over in /home). The technical savvy of
this distro is why I have stuck with it for over a decade.

Fedora 10 dpms
by John Thompson

I'm having a problem with DPMS since upgrading to Fedora 10. When I am
logged in, DPMS works fine -- the screen blanks, then goes into standby,
and eventually shuts off.
If I leave the system at the gdm login screen, it doesn't work. The
screen blanks, but it never goes into standby or shuts off no matter how
long I leave it.
What do I have to change to make DPMS work at the gdm login screen?

strange directory in / on F10
by Jack Howarth
Is anyone else seeing this under Fedora 10?
On my x86_64 installation, upgraded from Fedora 8,
I am seeing a directory named {fda00e13-8c62-4f63-9d19-d168115b11ca}
in the root level which contains a subdirectory
chrome and files chrome.manifest install.rdf.
The rpm -qf command doesn't indicate that this was
installed by a particular package. Any idea where
this directory is coming from and is it safe to
delete it?
Jack
ps The chrome.manifest file contains the text...
