Screensaver in F11 loses horizontal sync
by Bob McConnell
I searched both Google and the archives of this list, but could not find
the magic keys to produce useful answers.
I downloaded the Fedora 11(*) live CD and used it to install on two
boxen. Both are showing the same problem. Everything works well until
the screen saver kicks in. At that point the display loses sync and
shows torn jagged diagonal lines across the screen. Any normal input
triggers a recovery and returns to my regularly scheduled programs.
Fedora 11, KDE
Box 1:
Dell GX270 SFF
P-4/Xeon 2.6 GHz
512 MB DDR RAM
20 GB IDE drive
Intel 865 Video Chip
Box 2:
White box
P-4/Celeron 1.0 GHz
512 MB DDR RAM
60 GB IDE drive
Apollo ProMedia PLE133T/a Video chip
Both boxes are talking to a Dell E173FP display through a Compaq KVM.
Display resolution is 1280x1024.
Where can I find instructions on how to re-configure the screen saver so
it inherits the correct video settings?
Where are the rest of the video settings saved so I can enable some of
the options that don't show up? For example, in System Settings->Dislay
the second box only shows a 60 Hz Refresh option. I need to enable and
select 75 Hz. The file I was expecting, /etc/X11/xorg.conf, is not there.
Where can I find instructions on how to install and switch to XFCE?

(*) I am trying out Fedora 11 for several reasons. First, at work we
just switched hosting providers which also means we switched our servers
from Red Hat to CentOS. After the switch, IT will no longer be managing
our external or internal servers. So I need to learn enough about the
environment to keep the development and QA servers in sync with the
hosted servers. Second, Slackware 13 does not play well with the Intel
video chips in most of my Dell computers. i.e. both the live CD and
install CD produce unusable configurations even in CLI modes. I have
been using Slackware since 1993, when it replaced my original Soft
Landing Systems 1.02 system (kernel 0.99pl12). But I have not been happy
with many of the recent choices made by that group. These two reasons
finally shoved me past the tipping point to begin leaving Slackware.

Thanks (to you and also Craig White and Tait Clarridge)
for confirming that the problem is likely specific to
my machine. Those match the versions I have:

I'm using Gnome but tried that and also tried a full reboot
after the updates but that didn't help. I also "rpm -e" all
the packages I listed and reinstalled them.
Last night I updated everything I could see that seemed related
to gnome, gtk, pygtk, Xorg, etc., on the theory that there was
perhaps some unrecognized dependency on a recent package but
it didn't help. (Unfortunately I can't keep everything up to
date over a 3KB/s modem connection that rarely runs unattended
for more than a couple hours.)
The only other thing I notice is when I run ibus-daemon from
a shell with "-v", I see lots of errors like the following that
appear when it's started:
(ibus-daemon:21356): IBUS-DEBUG: From ::1.1 to :1.3, Error: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Failed :
Can not get value [engine/anthy/shortcut/default->on_off]
(ibus-daemon:21356): IBUS-DEBUG: From ::1.1 to :1.3, Error: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Failed :
Can not get value [engine/anthy/shortcut/default->circle_input_mode]
...
(ibus-daemon:21356): IBUS-DEBUG: From ::1.1 to :1.3, Error: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Failed :
Can not get value [engine/anthy/shortcut/wnn->add_word]
(ibus-daemon:21356): IBUS-DEBUG: From ::1.1 to :1.3, Error: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Failed :
Can not get value [engine/anthy/shortcut/wnn->start_setup]
They all have in common a message about not getting a value
from engine/anthy/shortcut/<something>. Perhaps these are
normal? If not, do they ring a bell with anyone?
I don't see any messages when I type the activate sequence
(alt-grave) in some window.

In retrospect it did sound a little pissy -- chalk it up to a
high level of frustration. But I have to honestly say that I
have more commitment to using a system that meets my needs than
to FOSS political correctness.

creating a new gnome terminal, running a command when the term starts...
by bruce
Hi.
I'm trying to create/invoke a new gnome-terminal, were i start/run a script
when the term starts up..
from the gnome-terminal docs, i'm assuming i can accomplish this by using
the "-x/-e" attribute when i fire up gnome-terminal...
this doesn't work... others appear to have the same issue...
so, when i do:
gnome-terminal -x "foo"
a new gnome term is created, but it hangs without a bash prompt (or any
prompt) created.
so it appears that a useless blank term window is displayed. the "foo"
script is simply an empty script for testing. it has the chgrp of 777 with a
chown of 777 and a chmod of +x.
in the fstab, there is a default devpts so the virtual dev for the term
window should be ok.. i think.
i'm running an older fedora 9 for this test.
any pointers/thoughts...
thanks...

T61 no sound with Fedora 11
by Yu Lex
Hello,
My headphone worked before, however, after some installation and update, I
found there was no sound on my T61 any more. I have tried "alsamixer -c0" or
"gst-mixer" to unmute all "MM" stuff, however it did not work. At present,
the only thing I can hear is the electronic noisy in my headphone. Could
anybody help me? Any comment will be really appreciated!!
Thanks in advance.

enabling root over ssh on F11
by Aaron Gray
I need to enable root access via sshd. I will be using certificates and
firewalled access.
I tried remove the suffix " user != root quiet" from /etc/pam.d/gdm.
Also added "PermitRootLogin yes" in /etc/ssh/sshd_config.
Also put SELinux into Permissive mode.
But still neither root sshd nor login work.
Help,
Aaron

There may be a way around this.
Comment out the nfs mount lines in fstab.
Boot will proceed using only the local mounts.
Write a small script file which contains the
command line versions of required 'mount' lines.
Call this script at the end of /etc/rc.d/rc.local with a '&' in the call
line
The nfs call will run in background and will not return until nfs has
timed out, but it will be backgrounded throughout, and other boot
processes (loading X, etc) will continue.
You can test this with a script file containing: 'date', 'mount -a',
'date', and changing your /etc/fstab to attempt to NFS mount from a
computer which does not exist (ie, mung the hostname of one of your
existing machines). You will see from the output that it will take the
full minute to return.
