Thanks for all the help from Phil Meyer. I'd like to get the new
method working, but unfortunately I don't have time to dink with it an
longer. *sigh*
I simply disabled NetworkManager, enabled the classic network service,
and configured my static route from the convenient GUI. Done.
Hopefully, NM will allow this simple configuration explicitly in the
future, rather than requiring expert intervention and editing of
config files (some of which don't exist in the install and must be
created from scratch!) still coming to no solution.
Later. Thanks again...

OpenLDAP authentification
by Luc MAIGNAN
Hi,
I've setup an openLdap server and I want windows client to authenticate
on it. Before Windows Vista, I use a GINA to perform this
authentication. Unfortunaly, there is no more GINA under Windows VISTA.
Does anyone know how to authenticate a Window$ Vista client on an
OpenLDAP server ?

KDE Community Stabilizes Desktop with KDE 4.1.1
September 3, 2008. The KDE Community today announced the immediate
availability of KDE 4.1.1, the first bugfix and maintenance update for the
latest generation of the most advanced and powerful free desktop. KDE 4.1.1 is
a monthly update to KDE 4.1. It ships with a basic desktop and many other
packages; like administration programs, network tools, educational
applications, utilities, multimedia software, games, artwork, web development
tools and more. KDE's award-winning tools and applications are available in
more than 50 languages.
The KDE 4.1 desktop
KDE, including all its libraries and its applications, is available for free
under Open Source licenses. KDE can be obtained in source and various binary
formats from http://download.kde.org and can also be obtained on CD-ROM or
with any of the major GNU/Linux and UNIX systems shipping today.
Enhancements
Pretty much all applications have received the developers' attention,
resulting in a long list of bugfixes and improvements. The most significant
changes are:
- - Significant performance, interaction and rendering correctness improvements
in KHTML and Konqueror, KDE's webbrowser
- - User interaction, rendering and stability fixes in Plasma, the KDE4 desktop
shell
- - PDF backend fixes in the document viewer Okular
- - Fixes in Gwenview, the image viewer's thumbnailing, more robust retrieval
and display of images with broken metadata
- - Stability and interaction fixes in KMail
To find out more about KDE 4.1, please refer to the KDE 4.1.0 and KDE 4.0.0
release notes. KDE 4.1.1 is a recommended update for everyone running KDE
4.1.0. It will be followed up by more x.y.z updates over the next months and
ultimately by a new feature release, KDE 4.2.0 this coming January.

resend: sorry hotmail is clumping my sentences together
by landon kelsey
since I installed Fedora 9, I get these messages
1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on 4
On boot just after page 1
"Booting the kernel"
message(s):
1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on 4
I have kernel:
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.25.14-108.fc9.i686 #1 SMP Mon Aug 4 14:08:11 EDT 2008 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
I did not have the problem with Fedora 8.
However all 4 ports work. I have something plugged into every port except for the internal.
(1) mouse
(2) flash memory
(3) flash memory
(4) flash memory
I just installed a new PCI card to give 5 USP 2.0 ports! On the old PCI port card I was getting several of the "unable to enumerate" messages above.

The answer to how your link media with programs
by Aaron Konstam
Many moons ago I asked how one controls what program handles various
media, like audio CD's, DVD videos etc. In f9 that is.
No one seemed to have the answer. Well I found the answer . It is:
System->Personal->File Management-> Media
Just so you'd know.

sorry but hotmail is clumping all my statements into one big mess!
by landon kelsey
I have Fedora 9/KDE 4.0.5 and have used yum to get the latest updates!
Now some mysterious "software update" system is updating!
For example: One morning I woke up and I got a new kernel all of a sudden!
2.6.25.14-108.fc9.i686
I have looked everywhere to find a dialog to shut off this software updater!
Once such a dialog appeared and I selected NOT to make updates.
This didn't help!
I have found (logged in as root) settings->software updates dialog where I set everything to "do nothing"
I looked in system services and yumupdatesd or yum-updatesd does not appear!
I did find this out!
ps -ef|grep -i package
root 15885 1 0 13:55 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/packagekitd
landon4 15891 2711 0 13:59 pts/1 00:00:00 grep -i package
[landon4@localhost Timer]$
so something is running!
Thanks!
under settings->software updates I found a dialog that set "update" settings for some facility I've never heard of!
I suspect this sneaked in about 2-4 weeks ago! I noticed something running this morning!
I have set everything to do nothing so I'll see what happens!
I have had empty yum updates for a while now!
I did do the script:
yum clean all
yum clean metadata
yum clean dbcache
yum update
still yum update yields nothing
I brought up the software updates dialog and set updates to
all updates/hourly/notify
perhaps the package kit "add on" changed everything
______________________________________________________________
Is anybody getting yum updates in the last 2 weeks???

strange behavior of vim syntax highlighting
by Uwe Kiewel
Hi world,
I've got a problem using vim's syntax highlighting feature.
System: Runlevel 5, KDE, Fedora 8
- in a text console (STRG-ALT-F1)-> it works
- ssh to localhost or ssh from a remote system -> it works
- as user doing su - user -> it works
- opening a xterm in KDE -> it doesn't work
My question: What is the difference between the first 3 ways and the
last one in allocating the vim environment?
Thanks,
Uwe

Putting files (images in particular) in a 'custom' order
by Chris G
I seem to have this problem regularly but still haven't found a good solution.
I currently use Digikam but the problem applies equally to other
applications, I haven't found anything that does what I want.
I want to select pictures randomly from various places (i.e. from
various different Digikam albums) and place them in a new album in a
specific order which has nothing to do with their dates, alphanumeric
file name or anything of that sort (no pun intended!).
*Surely* people want to be able to do this. Currently in my case it's
simply because I have taken two sets of photographs of the same trip,
one lot in one direction and the other lot in the opposite direction.
I want to collate a set of pictures of the trip in 'geographic' order
from the best images selected from the two albums. I can't find any
way of doing this apart from laboriously renaming each image as I
select it and even then if I change my mind and want to add one in the middle
somewhere I've got a horrible re-ordering problem again.

[F8 x86_64] Pulseaudio w/USB Audio Device
by Sean Bruno
With my USB Turntable connected when I login to my desktop, pulseaudio
sets it's default "sink" to the USB Audio subsystem instead of my
onboard audio card.
I had the same issue with alsa many moons ago, and was able to work
around that with some modprobe.conf foo. Now, my configuration hacks
don't seem to be able to tame the pulseaudio demon and I am at a loss.
Any guidance on how to get pulseaudio to use the sound device I choose
as the default sink?
