To yum or not to yum
by Petrus de Calguarium
What is up with yum? Is the crisis over? I have not had any updates for a
couple of weeks now. Do I need to take some special action to get things
moving again? Or will it happen by itself?

GUI application for converting/resizing videos
by Marcelo Magno T. Sales
People,
I usually convert/resize/transform video files using avidemux, with good
results. However, I have here some high resolution video files
(1920x1080 @ 60 fps) generated by a Sanyo camcorder that are played
correctly, although slow, in kaffeine, but are not read correctly in
avidemux.
avidemux shows the lower half of the videos completely distorted and the
upper half out of proportion. When these videos are converted to other
formats or even transformed in any way and saved back with the same
codec avidemux had detected in the original files, the resulting files
are completely useless and their sizes are about 5 times the sizes of
the originals.
Any ideas on why this happens?
Is there other GUI applications in fedora repos that can
convert/resize/transform video files?
Thanks,
Marcelo

kpalmdoc - convert PalmDOC to Text
by Frank Cox
I'm sure that I'm doing something wrong here but I just can't see it.
I have a number of pdb files that I want to convert to text. It seems that the
simplest solution is kpalmdoc (part of kdepim).
So...
I crank up kpalmdoc and find two file selection boxes: "Text file:" and
"DOC file:". If I select the palmdoc file in the "DOC file" box and leave the
"Text file:" box empty, then click on "Convert PalmDOC to Text", I get this
message: "The text file /home already exists. Overwrite it?"
Er, no, let's not overwrite that.
If I select a directory name under "Text file:" it tells me that "The text
file /directory/I/selected already exists. Overwrite it?"
In order to convert an individual file to a text file I have to create a dummy
text file first, then select that and tell the program to overwrite it.
It gets worse if I select "Convert whole folders". Then I get two selection
boxes, "Text folder:" and "Palmdoc folder". No matter what I selections I make
in those boxes, I always get the message "No text files were converted
correctly" when I click on "Convert PalmDOC to Text".
So, what am I doing wrong here? I can do this job by creating a
dummy file for each of the pdb files that I want to convert, then individually
selecting each file and telling it to overwrite the dummy file but that's
obviously not the right way to do it.
On a related note, can this conversion be done from the command line instead of
having to go through the gui?

Thanks!

Re: "Permissions Denied" error as root: SOLVED
by R. G. Newbury
R. G. Newbury wrote:
To recap, attempting to run a script, as root, with permissions 755
produced a 'Permissions denied' error.
The problem was that the partition was mounted with 'users, defaults'
options, and 'users' implies 'noexec' and overrides 'defaults' (which
implies 'exec'),
Changing the line in fstab to 'defaults' and quick 'umount' and 'mount'
fixed the problem.
Weird bit is that I was logged in as root..WHICH WAS MISLEADING. When
'nonexec' is set, ALL users are denied execution privileges. (This is
most useful for security purposes in denying the use of programs on for
example a USB stick from compromising the system.
So, besides checking the permissions on a file, and the parent
directories, you have to check how the partition was mounted.
This will catch you when you are playing with something on a 'spare'
partition.
Or when you change the fstab without realizing the implications!
Thanks to all for the pointers, which gave the solution.

Laptop Recommendations
by Dave Cross
I'm about to buy a new laptop. And I'd like to buy one that works well
with Fedora 9. My current thinking is to go with something from Dell,
because they support Ubuntu on some of their laptops - and if
something works with Ubuntu then there's a good chance that it can be
made to work with Fedora. I'm very tempted by their new Studio range,
but they don't (yet) sell them with Ubuntu on so I suspect there might
be dragons there.
But I thought I'd ask if anyone here had any other suggestions. I'm
looking for a light laptop with something like a 12" screen, a 2 Ghz
or more processor, 2 Gb of RAM, 300 Gb hard disk, wireless and
bluetooth. Working well with Fedora is my primary concern.
I'm hoping to spend about £800, but could go to £1,000 for the right machine.
Any suggestions? Or suggestions of better places to go for suggestions?
Cheers,
Dave...

Nvidia driver

My PC is only 2-3 weeks old in my possesion and this is my first
encounter with Fedora 9.
(Earlier I was running Fedora Core 5)
The only screen resolution option I have now is 640x488, and I would
like to change that.
So I took a look at the ../resources/.. site, where I found instructions
for downloading Nvidia-driver:
$yum install kmod-nvidia , nvidia installation through Livna.
Installation went OK , and I did reboot the PC as recommended,
but no change, and the PC does not identify the LCD. It is "unknown" to it.
It is configured as Vesa, which I guess is the best option when nothing
else is known. But I saw a message flashing over the screen on bootup
stating something about
the Nvidia driver - it would not take effect until.... something I did
not manage to read before it vanished.
Does anyone know what I should be looking for? (I did demsg, but no
trace of the message there)
Brgds
