mplayer / xscreensaver Display Power Management
by Frank Cox
I don't do an awful lot with videos, but I have lately noticed that gmplayer
doesn't re-enable the Display Power Management function of xscreensaver.
It used to be that gmplayer would turn off xscreeensaver completely for the
duration of the video and then put everything back to normal afterward.
Now, it seems to turn xscreensaver off for the duration of the video and
re-enable it afterward, but the Display Power Management function doesn't
return. So after playing a video I get my regular rotating selection of
xscreensaver demos, but my screen never blanks or turns itself off like it does
before I play a video.
So... what's wrong here?

Netgear WG511T config
by Chris
Guys -
I tried to install F8 on my HP lappy last night with my new WG511T
wireless nic. F8 sees that ath0 (sort of) but it's not configurable.
Well, sort of there too. Under network mgr, it sees wlan0, I config as I
normally would however, it just won't work.
Interestingly enough, I did put Ubuntu on this device over the past
weekend and Ubuntu saw it (with restricted drivers) and I was able to
get it configed and working.
Any ideas how I can do this? Is it even possible? Is there a FAQ or
alternative config I need?
Please help - I really don't want to keep Ubuntu on this device.
TIA
Regards,
Chris

Help installing Fedora 8 on iMac G3
by Catherine Fitzgerald
I have been trying for a week to install Linux on my old mac: iMac G3,
500MHz, slot-loading CD, 20G HD. I am completely new to Linux and the
only time I've ever used command prompts is on a PC, and a very long
time ago, so if anyone is able to help me, please keep the instuctions
as clear as possible. I appologise in advance for the long drawn-out
detail below, but as I have no idea what the problem is I thought it
better to give as much information as possible.
The problems I have had are:
1- Innitially tried to install Kubuntu 6.04 using a live image burnt
onto a CD using InfraRecorder (on a Windows XP 2000 pc). The live CD
would go to a black screen after the initial boot dialog and then run down.
2- As that didn't work, and I was not worried about removing the old OS,
I tried installing Kubuntu, erasing the old partitions. It would
install, then freeze on the login and not accept any of my keyboards for
input (either the mac keyboard, a pc keyboard or either of my wireless
keyboards) so it was not possible to log in. After several attempts at
reinstalling Kubuntu and getting the same problem I decided to try
installing Fedora.
3- To avoid downloading a large amount I downloaded
fedora-8-ppc-rescuecd.iso from one of the recommended mirrors and burnt
it to CD (using InfraRecorder on the pc). Initially the install process
worked, and it requested a web address to download the images from. I
chose the monash uni web site (html server) as it is relatively close,
and the install proceeded up until I hit the 'yes' button for the final
install process.
4- After hovering on the 'preparing to install' screen for over an hour
I got this message:
"The file a2ps-4.13b-69.fc8.ppc.rpm cannot be opened. This is due to a
missing file, a corrupt package or corrupt media. Please verify your
installation source.
If you exit, your system will be left in an inconsistent state that will
likely require reconfiguration."
with the option to reboot or retry. I hit retry and after another hour
the same message came up again.
5- After rebooting the mac does not recongnise a bootable file (this was
not a surprise). I put in the rescue cd, which boots without a problem,
but requires me to know what to do (ie, use a command line and have a
clue) to do anything.
6- I decided that it might work if I tried the live cd, so downloaded
and burnt that. The live cd boots, goes through all the loading (mount
dialogue? - with [ok] in green at the end of each line] then the
computer goes to a black screen and the cd keeps buzzing away but doing
nothing. I tried to restart the computer and typed in 'install' at the
boot prompt, but get a message saying something along the lines of not
recognised, or the iso can't be booted.
7- Which is where I am now. The HD has been reformatted (the old mac
software does not recognise it - which is fine because I don't really
want to go back to the old mac OS), but it has no installed OS that it
can boot. Is this simply an issue of trying a different mirror to
install the Fedora operating system, and if so, can you recommend one
that has all the files intact? Or is the issue that when I burn the CDs
it is being corrupted there? I can't download the DVD iso as the mac has
no DVD player, and doing the install over the internet is not a problem
for me if that is the only way I can do it.
Any advice would be most appreciated.

Fedora Unity releases updated Fedora 8 Re-Spin
by Jeroen van Meeuwen
The Fedora Unity Project is proud to announce the release of new ISO
Re-Spins (DVD and CD Sets) of Fedora 8.
These Re-Spin ISOs are based on the officially released Fedora 8
installation media and include all updates released as of March 31st, 2008.
The ISO images are available for i386, x86_64 and PPC architectures via
Jigdo starting Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008.
We have included CD Image sets for those in the Fedora community that do
not have DVD drives or burners available.
During the Testing phase the following was found:
1) a full x86_64 install with many optional packages or languages
requires at least 768MB of RAM rather than the recommended 512MB.
2) the ftp utility in rescue mode will not work (missing
libreadline.so.5) -which doesn't affect FTP installations.
With this particular Re-Spin, we address the following problems
experienced by many community members, in addition to the problems we've
resolved in previous Re-Spins[1]:
- #420281, Cannot find kickstart file during unattended installation
The kickstart file name searched for after booting from CD or DVD with
option "linux ks" and using a dhcp and nfs server is wrong.
We would like to give a special thanks to the following for testing this
respin in 2 days
- Harley-D Dana Hoffman Jr
- zcat Jason Farrell
- iWolf Jeffrey Tadlock
- baard1973 S.A. Hartsuiker
- Southern_Gentleman Ben Williams
- kanarip Jeroen van Meeuwen
Fedora Unity has taken up the Re-Spin task to provide the community with
the chance to install Fedora with recent updates already included.
These updates might otherwise comprise more than 1.33GiB of downloads
for a full install.
This is a community project, for and by the community. You can
contribute to the community by joining our test process.
A full list of bugs, packages and changelogs that have been updated in
this Re-Spin can be reviewed on
http://spins.fedoraunity.org/changelogs/20080331/
Go to http://spins.fedoraunity.org/spins to get the bits!
If you are interested in helping with the testing or mirroring efforts,
please contact the Fedora Unity team.
Contact information is available at http://fedoraunity.org/ or the
#fedora-unity channel on the Freenode IRC Network (irc.freenode.net).

Cannot play .flv files with gmplayer (whereas with mplayer it is ok)
by Mark Ryden
Hello,
- When I try to open and play an .flv file with command line
mplayer everything is ok.
- When I try the same with gmplayer, I keep getting a message
flickering all the time , saying:
"AO_ALSA: Unable to find simple control 'PCM',0.
Any ideas what should I do to be able to play this .flv with gmplayer?
I want to add that on vlc I have some problems with unclear audio when
playing these .flv files; and in
totem I cannot play that .flv.
So in this occasion - can anybody recommend an .flv player?
Regards,
Mark

You can do a bugzilla.redhat.com search for that package, and you'll
might see who is the default assignee.
You can also find more info with the package database that keeps track
of these things:

Thanks to Craig/RE: Getting Fedora installed
by Robert Rabinoff
Hi Craig,
I tried sending this off-line but my email address is a forwarding service (reply-to domain != ISP's domain)
so your mail server bounced it. What I was trying to say was:
Thanks -- that gave me what I needed. I was able to Alt-Ctrl-F1 a few times until I
got close enough to edit the config to where it recognized what it needed to do and
from there on it was fine.
Thanks again!
