Conditionals in BASH
by Matthew Saltzman
The conditionals && and || in bash are short-circuit, so that once a
term is evaluated that determines the success or failure of the entire
expression, evaluation of the remaining alternatives is skipped.
In a test expression (enclosed in [ ... ]), are the conditionals -a and
-o also short-circuit? The O'Reilly BASH book seems to suggest that
they are not, but the description seems to me to be ambiguous.
TIA.

problems with dial-up
by Michael Klinosky
A few months ago, I installed F8 and tried to set it up for dial-up. I
couldn't get it to connect (perhaps there were some problems with the
install).
So, I re-installed F8 (formatted /, but left /home intact). I'm _still_
have problems - and it seems to be the same issue.
I had to modify wvdial.conf to get even this far (wvdial flat out
refused to work with the default, as configged by Admin > Network).
[Modem0]
Modem = /dev/ttyS1
Baud = 115200
SetVolume = 4
Dial Command = ATDT
Init1 = ATZ
Init3 = ATM1L4
FlowControl = CRTSCTS
[Dialer enternet]
Area Code = ###
Username = mpk2
Password = ******
Phone = #######
Stupid Mode = 1
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Inherits = Modem0
Here is output (bad characters removed):
[root@localhost etc]# wvdial
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ

--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0

ATM1L3

--> Modem initialized.
--> Sending: ATDT##########

ATDT##########

--> pppd: [08]ŧ[08][08]
That much probably looks good. BUT, I can't do anything! (Actually, it
will ping, but no www access.)
Network apparently has a problem with the setup - I activate the dialup
config, and somehow it gets deactivated.
What's going on?

No. I'm trying to connect to my isp (just a basic dial-up connection). I
had this running beautificly with F6.

PolicyKit problem HELP!
by Matto
Hi Guys,
My earlier post regarding Xen and KVM has been wittled down to a policy kit
problem.
Here is the output, perhaps someone can give me a hint (google has not been
helpful) ?:
[matt@localhost ~]$ polkit-grant --gain org.libvirt.unix.manage

Authentication is required.

Re: WiFi - Wireless-G and Wireless-N adapters support in Fedora 9
by Edwin Tan
hi all,
Since Fedora 9 is coming out soon next month. I would like to know
the drivers support for the WiFi adapters, will Fedora include the
drivers in their OS or rely on the 3rd party contributors? By the way,
found the .run installer from ATI is pretty neat. Will all the drivers
come this way?
thanks

Hi Gy,
Just to throw in my situation rather than advice, I have FC6 running
fine on 2 PII's, one 233MHz 512MbRAM and the other 400MHz with 256
MbRAM. They are not fast, but work fine. One of these days when there
is plenty of spare time, I'll try F8 on them to see what happens. I'll
leave it to others more experienced to comment on the video situation.

I didn't explicitly set the default route. Do I need to?

I didn't check a system that has a name (just my dsl-connected machine).
I'll try a named system.

I had that system on F6, and it worked splendidly. I breezed thru the
config (my first attempt at configging dial-up on linux!)
Then I upgraded to F8. Frankly, I think that something changed with
respect to dial-up (e.g. F6 didn't use wvdial).
The first time I installed F8 on that machine, I used the CD (which
didn't ask which packages to install - so I figured that it assumed I
was totally in the 21st century). This time, I used the DVD, and made
sure that I chose the packages.
