kernel-PAE or xen or both?
by Maurizio Rottin
HI all,
i have a dom0 with 5GB of ram.
i'm using kernel-xen both in dom0 and in domU's
i'm running 4 virtual machines, but at some point the last created (or
the one with the higest id) get crashed by something that i can't find
out.
No logs, but a mere
[2008-03-05 11:28:08 xend.XendDomainInfo 3625] WARNING
(XendDomainInfo:923) Domain has crashed: name=php01 id=369.
[2008-03-05 11:28:09 xend.XendDomainInfo 3625] DEBUG
(XendDomainInfo:1566) XendDomainInfo.destroyDomain(369)
[2008-03-05 11:28:09 xend.XendDomainInfo 3625] DEBUG
(XendDomainInfo:200) XendDomainInfo.create(['domain',[cut]
in /var/log/xen/xend.log
Then i'm wandering if the problem can be memory usage, since to use
more that 4GB i should use kernel_PAE instead.
Maybe, if kernel-xen is not compiled against PAE, the server does not
know how to use the last GB...just supposing...
But can i have kernel-xen combined with PAE?!? i don't know...
Anyone know if my setup is wrong?

Burning a kernel
by Ric Moore
Can one roll a kernel using the vanilla kernel rpm? I know you would
need kernel-devel and possibly headers, but can it be done? I tried
giving it a go, as the i686 kernel seems to be rolled with intel and I
want to get all the gusto I can as I have an AMD-64 chip. Which, from
what I'm seeming, is not checked off in the Fedora stock build.
No, I'm not touching anything else as I'm plain afraid to do so. Got
plenty of time for it to build 100 modules I'll never need. :) There
used to be a HOW-TO at fedora.redhat.com, but damned if I can find it.

Re: Mail or mail
by tony.chamberlain@lemko.com
Yes but even with sendmail running, sometimes the mail
does not go through. Occasionally I have better luck
when I change the hostname to a fully qualified.
That is instead of host or host@localdomain
I make it host(a)company.com but not always.

If you mean there's no mail command, that's one thing. If you mean mail
isn't delivered, the "sendmail" server is outgoing, the "dovecot"
service is incoming.
And if you mean something else, please restate the question.

I use F7 and the stock rpm never built properly for me, i had to
download 2.6.22.6 from kernel.org and that is fine.
Also, the unadjusted fedora .config IS the same as the default
installed kernel, and i would say it's more like a baskin-robbins gift
basket than anything "vanilla". There is enough stuff there to get
sick on, which is a good reason to make your own. I guarantee 95% of
users do not need 95% of the built-in options; they are just included
so anyone can do anything right off the bat. On the other hand, don't
fret too much, I think the kernel and it's mass are much much less
significant now than back when you would be wishing you had one of
those new pentium chips.

It has to be optimized for one or the other but not both, i believe.
Go thru those "processor type and features" options carefully, there
are probably a FEW things in there to consider.
> used to be a HOW-TO at fedora.redhat.com, but damned if I can find it.
Yes, the LDP (linux documentation project) people have apparently
discontinued this -- i hope not to discourage anyone from trying! That
is how i learned to build kernels years ago, and what was once
intimidating is now easy. Unfortunately, I do not have a copy of the
HOW-TO, but for sure someone out there does so write a post asking for
it. The most important thing, which has not changed with the versions,
is understanding how to boot test your new kernel and how to switch
back to the old one if it fails. Grub or lilo documentation may help
with this (I think the HOW-TO actually refers to lilo whereas fedora
uses grub, hmph).
nb. xconfig often or usually fails but menuconfig should work and is
much, much better than answering y/n questions one at a time.
good luck ric! from the sound of it you are going to need to find some
instructions!
ps. you are not BURNING a new kernel, you are COMPILING one. but call
it "rolling" and you might be ok

After lot of googling I found that, this webcam is not supported by Linux (I doubt ??) and finally lend up to the following site :

How to stop permissions on /dev/snd devices being changed?
by Chris G
I seem to need to give all users permissions on the devices
in/dev/snd.
However if I set the permissions to 0666 they revert to 0660 when I
reboot the system. How do I get the more open permissions to stick?

Why is F8 nm-applet Not as Good as the F6 Version?
by Rick Bilonick
When I used networkmanager and nm-applet under Fedora 6, it made it easy
to choose either "wired" or "wireless" networks. You just clicked which
one you wanted. In Fedora 8, nm-applet does not have a "wired" choice
(it only shows the wireless networks). So since I upgraded to Fedora 8
about 2 months ago, I have to struggle with networkmanager to use wired
ethernet at work and wireless at home. At work I have to turnoff
networkmanager (via services), kill wpa_supplicant and nm-applet and
type in the dns (nm always overwrites the fixed dns) before connecting
to the wired network. Before I leave work, then I need to re-enable
networkmanager via services and allow networkmanager to control the
wireless card (wlan0) so I'll be able to connect at home. It was SO
simple under F6 and its such a mess under F8. Or am I missing something?
I tried wireless assistant but SELINUX blocks it from running. I also
tried wifiradar but it NEVER connects at home (even though I've given it
the same info). At least nm works at home and at work using WPA when I
need a wireless connection at work.
