Take a look in your ~/.xsession-errors file. There will probably be a
message like:
Traceback (most recent call last):
...

...
RuntimeError: ...
Take a look for it, and tell us what it says.

gnome desktop icons disappeared
by Sudheer
Hello,
When I started my computer today, my gnome desktop icons had
disappeared. As far as I can recall, I hadn't changed any settings. When
I right click on the desktop, the context menu doesn't appear either.
But the desktop wallpaper remains intact. I can see the files on Desktop
from nautilus though. This is happening only for 1 user. All other users
are fine.
How can I resolve this?
[sudheer@localhost ~]$ uname -a

What to do?
by Robert Wuest
My system is really fouled up now. Starting with the updates on Feb 18,
it seems the whole thing is falling apart. Before that it ran like
clockwork.
First the pam-0.99.8.1-17 thing. Then the DVD burner quit working (just
hangs when I hit the write to disk) and now nautilus won't start at all.
Programs I wouldn't expect to crash, do so every time (scigraphica for
example). Something went whacko today while talking to a client, the
system became very very slow and unresponsive and since I had the client
on the phone at the time, I just did a ctrl-alt-backspace and the
problem seemed to fix itself, but I think I didn't look very good over
that. ( This is a Q6600 w/3 gig. What can slow that down to a crawl? I
didn't take time to look. ) Packages build wrong. Compiz insists on
starting everytime I log in. You name it, it's happened in the past few
days.
yum check-update reports nothing.
fontconfig won't build for --target=i386 (it did a week ago).
I'm not griping, really. I've been a Redhat/fedora user since Redhat 4.
(I played with RH2, but was a slackware user at the time) I just want a
working linux system. I remember having to calculate mode lines from my
monitor manual to get X running.
But I'm starting to look around.
I'm really nervous about this. I ran FC4 for a long long time and it
was so stable. On quite a few systems. It's still running on my little
home server. I need a stable dev system. I've been making a living
developing Linux systems for over 12 years now and I can't get own F8
box to run smooth? That sure doesn't look good to clients. I've spent
dozens of hours trying to heal this box and it just seems to be getting
worse.
It probably matters that this install was done as a clean F7 install
which was live upgraded to F8 after about 2 weeks.
SO I see 4 choices:
1) Do a clean install of F8, essentially start over (I have
separate /, /boot, /opt, /home, and /usr/local partitions),
2) try and fix this (the pam thing _really_ makes me leary),
3) cross my fingers and hope it stays up 'til F9 comes out and hope
that is better,
4) jump ship to some other distro.
Knowing just how dangerous this is, I am asking for opinions. I've got
a ton of code to write for a client and I seem to be spending hours
mucking with system instead. I'm getting behind. I don't have time for
this. Anxiety is taking it's toll. Grrrrrrrrrrr.
Maybe KDE'll work better ........

Cups keeps dropping Printer on Bluetooth printing.
by Jim
FC8-x86_64 Bluetooth printing.
Everytime I want to print I have to go into system-config-printer and
check the box 'enable' at the STATE of the printer and
then to 'Goto Server, and click on that to get the printer back into the
'Idle' state to print.
If I do 'hcitool scan' it always detects the 'Printer bluetooth device'

another selinux issue
by Valent Turkovic
I have another issue with selinux, and it is an ironic one because
selinux stopped selinux-troubleshooter from starting so can't see what
is the issue...
I have switched to permisive mode on selinux in ordet to make live cd
with revisor. But now I see that selinux troubleshooter has some problems.
I see some selinux issue pops up in my tray (yellow star) but when I
click on selinux troubleshooter I see nothing!
I only get this error: "connection failed to
/var/run/setroubleshoot/setroubleshoot_server
When I restart selinux service:
/etc/init.d/setroubleshoot restart
Now that I start selinux-troubleshooter it is connected to selinux
service but I see no issues in it...
Any ideas?
Thank you in advance,
Valent.

This seems to me due to really bad media. Would you mind posting the output
of
"dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/cdrecorder | head -n 5"
(substitute /dev/cdrecorder with your device)?
I'm curious to see the media-id of those memorex DL...

Re: Burning CDs
by garys@email.com
I'm using Fedora 7 with all updates applied (except for a very recent
Perl update that the update program couldn't find).
I have been using xcdroast to save photos onto CDs. I always write
multi-session CDs so that I can keep adding photos until the disk is
nearly full. Some time over the past 5 months xcdroast seems to have
stopped working. After some Googling I found that a kernel update was
(probably) responsible and that it works when run as root. That would
be
an acceptable temporary solution, but for me it doesn't work.
xcdroast
starts up but never sees a CD in the CD-writer. Asking xcdroast to
scan
for devices causes it to hang. This is true for both ordinary users
and
root.
After further investigation I found an alternative CD burning program
called graveman and tried it. It hangs on startup for both ordinary
users and root.
Finally I tried to use the CD burning facility built in to Nautilus.
The
trouble now is that I can't find out whether Nautilus will write a
new
session to a multi-session CD. There's no option to control that
AFAICS.
So I haven't clicked the write-to-disc button to see if it works.
If necessary I could learn how to use cdrecord (or is it wodim now?),
but that's far more complicated than I need and I'm fast losing the
will
to live. ;-) Any suggestions?
Try K3b -- Easy to use.................gary

I've used K3B on Memorex DVD+R DLs under F8 with no problems. My DVD
writer is an LG GSA-4163B. Have you tried mounting the DVD on another
machine, or in a normal DVD player? Do other DVDs mount correctly on
your machine?
poc
Thanks for confirming that others can write DL DVDS. I've been suspicious
of my
TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H652M and sure enough It's capable of writing DLs
but
not capable of reading the end product. My HP DVD Writer dvd530i was able
to
open the DVD - settling the issue for me. ..........gary

Dolphin issues after KDEBASE4 update
by Jorge Fábregas
Hello guys,
I'm running stock KDE (3.5.x) on Fedora 8 and I was using (until now) d3lphin.
After the recent kdebase4 update d3lphin was deleted. Ok, I now have the real
dolphin from kde 4... However:
1- Its default behaviour is single-click. I run my KDE system
with "double-click How can I change this?
2- It has its own file-type associations. It won't respect my current KDE
file-type associations.
Right, I know dolphin is using its kde4 libraries (not getting the stuff I
configure on my KDE3 Control Center) so... is there a KDE4 Control Center? I
did a search on the files installed by kdebase4 and I don't see any
kcontrol4 :(
I don't want to install the full-blown kde 4.... (I'll wait until 4.1) but I
was used to d3lphin and now I can't configure dolphin as I did with d3lphin.
Thanks for any help.
Best regards,
Jorge
