using fedora and a decent laptop to build an "image generator"?
by Robert P. J. Day
as a more general query encompassing some of the questions i've been
asking lately regarding video, does anyone have any advice on using
f10 and a decently-equipped laptop to create a basic video image
generator?
at a bare minimum, i need to be able to pump out WUXGA video on an
external port (DVI, HDMI or possibly the newer display port). beyond
that, in order to test external video equipment, i'd dearly love to be
able to adjust the refresh rate (from 60Hz down, possibly as low as
50Hz, just to see the effect on some hardware).
in terms of colour correction, i can see that xorg.conf already
gives me the freedom to adjust gamma values in Monitor sections, so
that's useful. and additional software that lets me examine/adjust
video timings would be most excellent.
anyway, you get the idea. has anyone been doing this sort of thing
in aid of video manipulation? thanks.
rday
p.s. obviously, if there's a particular distro that is strong in this
area, i'm sure you'd be happy to tell me about it, even if it isn't
fedora. :-)

ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link not ready
by Marland V. Pittman
Hello Fedora Users.
I recently did an installation on my workstation, dual, dual-core
opterons on an Asus KFN5-D SLI with two 8800GS cards in SLI. Previous
versions of Fedora have gone okay, with the usual quirks that have to
get worked through, but I'd like some help with this one.
I installed from a Live USB, added the RPMFusion repos, and did a su -c
'yum-install kmod-nvidia'. Rebooted, and got these messages:
ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link not ready
ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth1: link not ready
Then, I can't get any further. I'm stuck... bootup stops.
I ran across this thread at the FedoraForum.org forums:
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=205439
I have two on-board network interfaces, so at least having both eth0 and
eth1 makes sense. I applied a bit of google-fu, and it seem like some
sort of problem with udev not assgning network interfaces the same way
each time it boots, but I don't really understand the problem or
solution. I'm guessing I could get past it by disabling the network
interfaces, but that'd be less than ideal. I've got a couple of network
cards I could stick in to try, but I'd expect them to work, since they
work in other OSes and previous installations of Fedora.
A bit more searching makes me believe it's an IPv6 vs IPv4 problem, but
I don't really understand that either. Maybe the hardware on this
particular workstation won't do IPv6. I'm just using a consumer-grade
Netgear Router, and residential DSL. I tried changing to a ClarkConnect
box, but that didn't work either.
Since I installed from USB, I don't know if I need to pass something on
the anaconda/kernel argument line to install with "noipv6" as listed in
(http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Anaconda/Options), but I'm less inclined
to figure out how, download and burn DVD media, and then install, just
to update and find the same problem.
Has anyone come up against this, reported a bug, or have a solution that
can help? I'd appreciate it. I'm willing to provide any additional info
necessary.

ssh-agent startup
by Guillaume
Hi,
For now, when I want to use ssh-agent, i have to open a shell, and then use
this command 'ssh-agent /bin/bash' to be able to use the ssh-agent
fonctionnality.
I would like to know if there is a tip to start ssh-agent at user login.
Like editing /etc/passwd an adding in the "shell field" /usr/bin/ssh-agent
/bin/bash like that :
***/etc/passwd***
user:x:500:500::/home/user:/usr/bin/ssh-agent /bin/bash
And by the way avoiding multi nested bash execution, avoid user to type this
command or multiple edit/modify of .bashrc of all my users.
thanks for your help.

F10 yun-cron Skip-broken by default?
by Frank Murphy
How can yum-cron be used with --skip-broken by default.
Have looked at yum-cron.conf
RUN_PARAMETERS=
but am uncertain if it goes there,
as most other switches seem to be yes\no variety.
Is skip-broken=1
within yum.conf
sufficient?

alternatives for java_sdk?
by Caitlyn O'Hanna
I've encountered some oddities with the way that java is setup on my F10
system while trying to learn some java stuff. When I try to run `mvn
jetty:run` I get the following exception over and over:
"""
java.lang.ClassCastException: gnu.java.nio.ServerSocketChannelImpl
cannot be cast to java.nio.channels.SocketChannel
"""
I've traced that back to '/usr/lib/jvm/java' pointing to
'/etc/alternatives/java_sdk' and that pointing to
'/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-gcj'. When I do a `alternatives --config java`
it shows '/usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.6.0-openjdk.x86_64/bin/java'. Typing `java
-version` shows the correct version, but `/usr/lib/jvm/java/jre/bin/java
-version` shows 1.5.0. On my F9 system the last command shows 1.6.0. I
do have JPackage 5.0 (generic) stuff installed on both systems, and I
have it set as an enabled repository normally.
I've tried `alternatives --set
java_sdk /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.6.0-openjdk.x86_64`, which is the path my F9
system is showing, but that didn't work.
Anyone have any ideas why this is set this way and how to fix it other
than manually changing the symlinks?
Thanks!

Hello,
Just installed wireshark using yum (yum install wireshark); it installed
successfully withour any error messages, but now I can not execute (as root
user) the command "wireshark" from the shell, it is not available there. I

find the GNOME menu options for wireshark but its not available there
(logged in using normal user). Whats wrong here?

HUP doesn't send to processes when logout
by 平天韩
hi,
It seems that when I logout from the console, the background process
doesn't get HUP signal:
{ trap "echo Ignore HUP >>/tmp/trap.out" 1; while sleep 3;do echo
hello >>/tmp/hello.txt;done; }&
And it seems it will become a daemon and run forever until rebooting.
Is this correct? Why it didn't get HUP signal?
Thanks!

HTTP file sharing in KDE4
by Marcelo Magno T. Sales
People,
In KDE 3.5.x there was a kicker applet named kpf, which was very useful
for sharing files using HTTP in a quick and easy way. Using it, we could
select a folder and make its contents instantly available in a simple
HTTP server, or even run several instances of kpf at once to share
multiple folders.
Is there a replacement for it in KDE4?
Thanks,
Marcelo

attansic tech Lan on board hardware
by Robert Karge
Hello all,
I just upgraded to F10-64 on an ASUS P5Q motherboard.
It's really a nice system however I can't get this LAN setup to function. I
found a number
of complaints about this subject on another Linux site.
However, F10 loaded booted and downloaded 350 update files.
So! How it do dis if there is a problem?
Thanks for the help
